lution of Parliament will be de
clared as soon as Sir John McDon
ald returns from England.
It is announced through British
sources that Secretary "Whitney
has secured the assistance of the
ablest naval constructors in Eng
land in making the plans for the
new cruisers.
The mayors of the chief cities
of Iowa recently held a convention
at Des Moines and agreed upon a
local option bill to be submitted
to the legislature. A table was
presented showing that in twenty
large towns, under the prohibitory
law, the number of saloons has in
creased over GO per cent.
The government has undertaken
a heavy contract in its crusade
against the timber thieves, the
transactions of these gentry being
usually carried on in sections of
country where the chances of de
tection are few and the probabili
ties of making a successful prose
cution limited. It is very neces
sary, however, that a few sovere
examples should be- made, since
there is some reason to believe
that a number of fortunes have
been made in the lumber business
by men who cut timber in large
quantities from the the public land.
The practice should be summarily
suppressed at the earliest possible
day, not only on account of the
loss sustained by the government,
but also for the lumber dealers
who have bought and paid for the
timber they use. Such men are at
a serious disadvantage when forced
to compete with those whose tim
ber has cost them nothing; and it
is but justice to a large class of
deserving men that the govern
ment should afford them protec
tion from their thieving neighbors.
There are signs in Germany
of a formidable revolt against the
domination of the irold standard.
Debtors there, like debtors
here, have discovered that while
their debts remain fixed at their
original volume, the products of
their industry are shrinking in
value. Farmers especially, most
of whom are carrying heavy mort
gages upon their farms, feel the
burden to be intolerant, and loudly
demand relief. A petition on the
subject from a congress of German
farmers has already been handed
to the German chancellor- and
reichstag. Its language is as stiung
as any which has ever been used
by the champions of silver in this
country. It declares that the
gold standard is grossly unjust to
debtors, making money dear and
merchandise of all kinds corre
spondingly cheap, and that it
threatens ruin to German agricult
ure, which no positive duties can
avert. It condemns the policy of
waiting for Great Britain to move
in the matter, aud pronounces the
losses which the restoration of
silver would inflict on the bond
holders and money lenders trivial
in comparison with those now suf
fered by the farming interest.
The chancellor is said to bo con
sidering the subject with anxiety,
and action on his part may soon be
looked for. The Sun recommends
to those financiers who insist that
this country should follow the ex
ample of England in the matter of
gold currency, a closer study of
the British journals. The London
Times recently recalled attention
to the fact that business in this
country, in spite of its silver dol
lar, shows signs of revival, while
the affairs of the United Kingdom,
with all its gold, are just as bad
as ever.
THE SALMON MARKET IX GREAT BRITAIN.
The London Grocer of December
12th gives the following report of the
cunil it ion of the Liverpool salmon
market: The Carnarvon Castle has
partly discharged her cargo of salmon,
and the samples we have seen con
tinue to bear out the favorable im
pression made by the first arrivals,
the quality of the fish, color of oil,
and freedom from soft and sloppy
tins being remarkable; in fact, wo ap
pear to have returned to the early
days of packing, when the work was
done with carefulness and regularity,
which so largely contributed to the
rapid growth of the article in public
favor. The sales for home and coun
try demand have recently been light
yet continuous, December being the
dullest month in the year in this re
spect, as the grocers very largely at
this season withdraw their stores
from their windows and shelves to
make room for more congenial Christ
mas goods; but on tho turn of the
year they begin to replenish and re
dress their windows and shops, etc.,
with tho attractive tins; hence, as the
days lengthen, the demand and the
price will steadily strengthen. The
broad fact will then soon assert itself
that with an average annual consump
tive demand for the past four or five
years of some 510,000 to 514,000 cases,
we shall have but 320,000 to 330.000
cases to supply it with. Another
report says: As predicted in our
last report, the cargo of the Carnar
von Castle has had little or no effect
upon our market We understand
that, as usual at this time of the
year, there is very little demand from
the country, but we know this must
change as soon as the Christmas
trade is over, and on this account
there ha3 been no anxiety on the
part of the holders to sell the few
lots that are on the market, as they
feel confident that unless they obtain
the prices they now ask, it will well
repay them to store the cases and not
offer them for another month.
