Why Ho Wore Cowhide Soots and
Xsnc Gloves.
Snake stories are always interest
ing, but the reality of a bout with a
snake is far from interring to the
participant. The rauHsnake and
particularly tho mountain rattler
figures oftenest in newspaper snake
stories. I seldom see the massauga
mentioned. Even the books do not
speak of it. And yet every pioneer
farmer of certain parts of Michigan
knows all about it and shudders as
the name is mentioned. Ho does not
fear the rattlesnake, for the latter
givs warning of hi presence, al
though I have often at first mist-"0"

a locust. He can oven endure the
sullen and deadly copperhead. But
say, "Look out' There's a deadly
massauga " to lum, and ho will jump
even when standing in his own par
lor. A gentleman went from Cleveland
many years ago into the then wilds
of Southern Michigan. Seeing that
he was not getting ahead in the
world in tho city he determined to
buy a little farm. All his possessions
included a little family and a big ar,
but he hewed a comfortable compe
tence with it. Ho hadn't money
enough to buy a team, and farming
without a team is like writing with
out hands. One day a farmer of
comparative wealth said to tho ex
Clevelandor: "I will sell you that
yoke of stags if you will clear three
acres of swamp for me with them."
Tho stags were an ugly span of brute3
that ran. away on the slightest provo
cation. An honest yoke of oxen are
as much superior to a yoke of stags
as a horso is to a wild and untamed
zebra, hut stag3 are better than no
team at all. The farmer seemed
surprised when his offer was accept
ed. The swamp was a dense growth
of high bushes. The stags hitched
to a clump of these bushe3 pulled
them out by main strength, and usu
ally celebrated the accomplishment
of the pull by running away with the
uprooted bushes.
"Better put on cowhide boots and
long gloves," said the farmer, grimly,
as the ex-Clevelander prepared to
enter the swamp for the first day's
work. The latter asked why ho
needed thoso belongings, but tho
farmer refused to answer him. He
soon found out. The swamp was
literally alive with snakes. There
were all varieties, but the most
numerous kind was a. short, fat
brown snake, saucy and spiteful.
Whenever the ex-Clevelander moved
about into the fastnesses of the
swamp, he would feel something
strike his boot legs and look down
to behold one of those stubbed
snakes darting at him. As he bent
over to fasten the chain about a
clump of bushes, one of those snakes
would strike at his hands and arms
protected by heavy gauntlet gloves.
Returning home from his first day's
work he found his boots and gloves
scratched in scores of places by the
fangs of those serpents.
"What are you doing?" asked a
neighbor.
"I'm clearing up the Dotyswamp,"
was the reply.
Tho neighbor threw up his hands
in horror, and exclaimed: "I
wouldn't walk into that swamp, let
alone work in it, for a farm. It's
full of snakes, mostly mossaugas.
Don't know what massaugas are?
Well, if one bites you, vou'll know.
They are ten times worse than a rat
tler, and never give any warning
before they strike."
A few days later I learned the hor
ror with which the farmers regarded
the reptile. They were at work in
the barn. A little boy was playing
just outside the large open doors of
a barn where men were "cleaning
up" wheat An old lady who was
visiting the family was famous for
taking snuff from a large brown
gutta-percha box in the form of a
coil. All at once the bov exclaimed :
"There's Mrs. Smith's snuff boxl"
and stooped over to pick it up. A
pioneer farmer seized the lad and
hurled him twenty feet away, and
then darted back himself and seized
a club. The snuff box proved to be
a big brown massauga, coiled up for
a spring at the unsuspecting child.
It darted toward the boy's rescuer
and fought him desperately, but
was finally killed. It was a pecul
iarity of those massaugas that they
would turn up in the most unex
pected localities.
At last the swamp was cleared.
Talk about your brave knights that
rode out armor plated to fight their
euemic3l The man who reclaimed
that swamp was a greater hero than
uy of them. More than once a
great blue racer a species so cow
ardly at times and so brave on other
occasions coiled itself about his leg
with a constriction so strong as to
almost stop the circulation of blood,
and darted its horrid but harmless
head toward his face.
When tho bushe3 had been pulled
out and piled up and dried, the fun
of burning them fell to me. It was
terrible fun. The flames had begun
to cweep over tho piles of brushes
when three great blue racers camo
gliding out toward me. I ran for
dear life, and the snakes pursued
me. Thev can distance tho fleetest
horse, and soon reached me. Then
I turned about to give them battle,
"when tho cowards glided away from
me with a rush. The fire spread.
More snakes darted out of the reach
of the flames. I procured ft club
and mounted a large stump. For
more than an hour I stood watch
ing the horrible sight. The swamp
was bounded on one side by a creek,
on another by tho highway, on
another by a cultivated field, and on
the side where I stood by woods and
more swamp. The thick smoke and
flames drove all tho snakes in my
direction.
Hundreds of massaugas darted
past the stump. Great rattlers, too,
were in the procession, and big
black snakes, and any number of
Btriped and milk snakes. As the
hell of fire would suddenly lick up
a brush heap, I could see two or
three belated snakes spring up and
then writhe in awful contortions in
the fire. It was a scene of tho in
ferno. Three acres of fire, three
acres of writhing snakes' I shall

mankind is wisest, which declares
that the poet's inspiration is greater
than worldly prudence, and that tho

A Dos Rcspnts an Insult.
"Lew" Bement's huge, good
natured, and intelligent Newfound
land, Bruno, was recently muzzled
by his master, in compliance with
tho village ordinance. After being
absent for a short time Bruno ap
peared at the shop with the muzzle,
whifh ho had in some manner de
tached, and, yoing up to the workman
who manufactured the article, he
laid it down at his feet, and walked
slowly away with an air of mingled
scorn and injured innocence, which
plainly said : "I have no use for such
a thing as that." The next nipht
the muzzle was again placed upon
him, and shortly afterwards it was
found, but Bruno, up to the present
date, has been missing. Ithaca
