A oung man recently fell into financial difficulties, and was com pelled to sell his household effects and find a temporary refugo vrith his littlo family at his father's house. After they had got fairly settled in their new home, the children went into the parlor to play on the piano. A few notes were struck, and then all was silent. The good grandmothor peeped silently into the room and found the children kneeling around a great arm-chair, and the eldest was praying in earnest tones : "O Lord, bo good to us, and send us a piano that has some music in it, like the one we used to have." Grigsby : "I trust you will favor us this "evening, Mr. Belmains?" Mr. Belmains: "Well er no hardly ! They don't care for serious pianoforte-playine in this house, you know. I hope you will give U3 'He's Got 'Em On,' "Mr. Gnsrsby." Mr. Grigsby: "Well I er think not scarcely! You see, in this house they don't appreciate serious comic singing !" "Yours is a very dangerous occu pation," said the philanthropist to the policeman. "Yes," replied the policeman, careles3lv. "Officers are sometimes killed while in the dis charge of their duty," continued the philanthropist. "Yaas," yawned the policeman. "You're not afraid of death, then?" "Certainly not; our minister says death is only a sleep, and I ain't afraid of sleep." Hearing a noise at night Jones de scends with a lighted candle and dis covers a burglar escaping with a full sack. "Hello," he cries, "come back, you!" "Eh, what?" returns the burglar; "ah, ye3, the silver can dlestick! Permit" me." Ho takes it from the hand of the astonished Jonc3 nnd puts it into his bag. "Ten thou sand thanks. Have I forgotten any thing else?" Mrs. De Beggs: "Did you take Johnny to school. Jeremiah!" Mr. De Beggs: "I did. An excellent schoolit is, Matilda. The scholars are models of deportment, the cur riculum is first-class, and the profes sor a man of ability. At least that is the way he struck me." Johnny (with a groan) : "You ought to have staid about an hour and seen how he struck me." At a franchise demonstration at Galashiels, Scotland, a man was ob served in the procession staggering along with a huge banner on which wasj inscribed, "Down with the Peers !" On being asked why he was so much opposed to the peers, who had never harmed him, he replied : "I dinna ken what ye're saying ; hut I wish peers was doan to the same price as app.les." Care For Iile.
