CO Groceries Cheap for Cash ! She gaifcj IMioriaw. ASTOKIA. OREGON: SCNDAY JANUARY 3. 18EC SOLVING THE PROBLEM. Eads' proposed ship railway across the isthmus has attracted world-wide attention and in many localities where navigation is im peded by natural obstacles, the question of the feasibility of kin dred schemes is discussed. At the close of 'So, the idea crystalized into shape in this part of the coun try by the organizing of a corpora tion at "Walla "Walla, called -'The Farmers' Railway Navigation and Steamboat Portage Co., with a capital or $1,000,000. The object of the company is stated to be to build a railway around The Dalles over which steamboats, barges and other vessels could be carried around the rapids. The organiza tion of the company has brought the O. R. & N. Co., into the field with a claim to right of way in the matter, the claim resting on al leged surveys regarding a similar project made in the seventies by the O. S. N. Co. It is also stated thai a third competitor has ap peared there almost simultaneously with the other two, the last corps being backed bv California cap italists, prominent among whom is mentioned D. O. Mills. The idea appears to be to discount the com pletion of the locks at the Cascades, necessarily a delayed woik and en tailing loss to the Columbia basin on the same principle that the Montana man lost money because he had no hogs to eat the acorns that profusely strewed the ground. The movement is to be com mended and the fulfillment of the idea encouraged, come from what source it may. Facility of trans portation is the prime requisite; ability to have giran cheaply reach the sea board, the desideratum. Anything that will enable the east ern Oregon or "Washington wheat grower to set his wheat on board an out going vessel cheaper than at present, is an improvement on existing conditions. A "Washington- special says: Ben. Holla day, one of the most famous of the postofiicc mail con tractors of the past, appears in Washington again this winter as a claimant for three hundred and twenty odd thousand dollars. Holladay has beon a claimant be fore congress for the last ten or fifteen years. He is one of the best known figures in the capital city. His claim relates to some unsettled accounts had with the postoffice department and it is not probable that the claim will ever be settled. There are so many new men in the house, to whom Holladay is thoroughly unknown, that the fact that he is a contractor claimant is enough to defeat his claim by an overwhelming major- "3T- The New York Sun thinks: "If the government is going into the telegraph business how long before it will absorb the railroad business likewise? If it takes the telegraph why should it not lake mines, the factories, foreign com merce. For our part we have always understood that the busi ness of the United States is to mind their own business.1' Toe "Walla "Walla Union argues that Commissioner Sparks is in er ror in deciding that the Northern Pacific railroad company has no right to land claimed by it on each side of one hundred miles of its roatftn Washington territory. There seems to be a singular fatality among the foreign salmon fleet of '85. Now comes a meager report that the Hover of The Seas, salmon laden from Victoria for London, has foundered at sea, a total loss. It was reserved for Judge Deady of this state to give a de cision in the Sharon-Hill case towhich the majority of the people of the coast "will give their hearty asent. .Jav Gould retired from "Wall ''street, Dec. 31st.. with $48,000,-SXIQ.
