Arsenic Imported te De populate Araerlca. There are imported annually into this city from Cornwall, in England, and from the mines of Austria, Hun gary, and Bohemia about 1,000 kegs of arsenic, which average 400 pounds weicht each. Physicians say tfiat a dose of two and a half grains of arsenioua acid is pretty certain to prove fatal. A little simple figuring will therefore show that if the im portations of a single year were di vided up into equal portions corre sponding in number with the number of inhabitants in the United States, and each man, woman, and child took one of those portions on a given day, human life would on that day cease to exist in the territory now covered by the stars and stripes. In recent years the importation has rapidly increased, and the fact that numerous cases of arsenical poison ing appear from time to time on the police records and before coroners' juries renders an inquiry desirable as to the purposes to which the enor mous shipments of this deadly min eral are applied. A reporter of the Herald visited several of the ureat drue importing houses, and consulted chemists in reference to this matter. All ad mitted that the quantity of arsenic used for medical purposes was insig nificant, and that tho bulk of the importation is used for manufactur ing, preer-ing, docorating and beau tifying purposes. DEATH FitOJI THE DBUO. A chemist who is engaged in tho service 01 one of our leading import ing houses, and who is an acknowl edged authority among his brethren, said: '"It is no secret that tho care less and unskillful handling of ar senic and arsenical preparations re sults in serious illness and in heavy loss of life every year." "Is it not a fact that arsenic in one form or other is making inroads into fashionable households year after year?" "This cannot b? disputed. Arsenic acid is the very best preserver not only of fabrics but of colors, and it is but natural that decorators should take some risks in using it. In many of otr fashionable mansions the bright colors on thejvalls .are made ikst by aisetiic. Tfie STuie"may be" sa'd of tud ca-nfs and tapestries, and of the gaudy, tinted robes, which have a fascination for some young ladies." "Does the presence of arsenic in an apartment necessarily imply that it must be an unhealthy place of abode?" "Not necessarily; still, I myself would not care to sleep in such a room. Odors may be given out that are euro to sicken the stomach if the work is unskillfullj' done. In my opinion this accounts for a good deal of the debility and nervous ailments that prevail in fashionable circles hero and elsewhere. Quite recently a woman lost her eyesight in this city while cleaning a carpet that was found to have its colors fastened with arsenic. I do not believe that any physician would maintain that it was pioper to place such a carpet for use in any room." "Aro the dangers of using arseni cal preparations fully recognized by the manufacturers who use them?" "They certainly should be; there is no excuse for ignorance in a mat ter of this kind. It is our business to import and sell our goods under proper safeguards ; after that all our respu isibility ends." "Are there dangers in the prepara tion of the article for the market?" "The preparation of arsenious acid is a most hazardous occupation. The workmen employed generally die be fore the age of forty, and their mean term of life runs from thirty to thirty five years. They are compelled to avoid alcoholic drinks and to live principally on leguminous vegetables, with plenty of butter, taking very little meat, and that fat. To each man two glasf es of olive oil are ad ministered daily." A SHOBT-HVED BUILLIAKCY. "To what extent is the drug used as a medicine?" "A very small fraction of the im portation" is used for that purpose, ft is used as a tonic occasionally, and actresses use it to a pretty con siderable extent to impart a bright hue to the complexion and luster to the eyes. When once used for that purpose it must be taken right along or the young lady will find that not only her dazzling vision but her bod ily energies will melt away with in credible speed. Horse-dealers know a thing or two about arsenic and they also use it." "For what purpose?" "Take an old railroad horse that has become emaciated in the service, or a broken-down racer, and dose him with arsenic under the advice of a veterinary surgeon for a few weeks. His appetite will come to him, his old hair will drop off and a new coat will come out, and the animal will become as frolicsome as a two-year-old. In the horse market he is bound to bring a good prico, and the countrj'man who buys him will be pioud of his bargain at least for a day or so. When the effect of the drug dies out the horse falls away, and'he never regains his strength." "Is arsenic acid used illegitimately by manufacturers?" "On this question I think there can be no doubt. There may ba recklessness under the guise of law in using th acid to fasten colajs en paper, carpets, tapestries, or articles of wearing apparel, and, technically peakintr, there may be nothing ille gitimate in all this. It is pretty gen erally understood, however, that some confectioners use arsenical preparations in coloring their goods, and this i3 certainly a most serious offense. Cases of this kind crop up from time to time, many of which result fatally, but I know of no in stance in which the offender received the punishment he merited. Arsenic is also used with dangerous results in painting toys and in coloring trim mings for ball dresses. All these things should be stopped by the Board of Health. The public" have enough to engage their attention in dealing with the scores of legitimate fields of industry in which the poison becomes a valuable agent if handled with scientific skiH." Now York Herald. EffSS ITatch cd In Traaslt. A St. Louis egg company's agent writes to the Qlobe-Lemocral: "I noticed an article in j'our paper re cently regarding some eggs which had been sent to Chicago, and which upon arrival were found to have hatched out in the cases during the journey. Something which hap pened at our factory will beat Chi cago. We handle large quantities of eggs, and in handling a case one day this week, we found in it, lying close together, nine fully developed young chicks, and they are doing nicely. One peculiar feature aboutthis case of eggs was that tho remainder of tho eegs were found to be in a fine condition." The 2Ueasuro of Success. Success Is largely a thing to be compelled, and it is tho result of the measure of resistance brought to bear on the inertia of material. The world pays little heed to the details by which it is wrought out. These find their records, as they will ulti mately find their rewards, in subtle forces of character, and on tho cor responding spiritual side of life. It is useless to expect a microscopic system of justice from a world that looks, crudely enough it may be, at results only, and which has no time, and no discriminative judgment as to the means by which thepe results are obtained. Ky' The entire newness of this little boy story the historian cannot vouch for, but its funniness is incontestable. A youngster of five was sent to the nearest barber-shop to have bis hair cut. "How do you want it cut?" saia the barber, "all flowed off foi the summor?" "No, I want it cut with a hole in it like papa's ! Cheer Up! Help is at hand. "I'm afraid I shall have to be taken to a hospital or to the poorhouse. I've been sick so long that my hus band, good and patient as ho is, can't stand the worry and expense much longer."
