m i- Wm gmttj Ustorim ASTORIA. OREGON: WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 30. 16S5 ABOUT SILVER. Hekk is an averment which well illustrates the depth of ignor ance which may exist even in the minds of cultured persons. It is from the Boston JPost that the New York Sun quetes: "Every month $2,000,000 of gold in the public treasury are paid out for $2,000,000 of silver to lie idle in the public treasury." Isn't such ignorance something wonderful, especially in Boston? The treasury buys its silver in the market, at the market price, and has always done so. What ever profit there is on its coinage the government makes. According to the report of the director of the mint, the purchases of silver in the fiscal year ending June 30, 18S5, were a little less than twentv-four millions and a quarter of standard ounces, cost ing, in round numbers, twenty three millions and three-quarters of dollars; and from this quantity of silver, more than twenty-eight mill ions and a half of standard dollars were coined. That is to say, for two millions of gold paid out monthly the treasury received two millions and three-eighths of silver money. It is true the silver lies idle in t ho treasury, but that is no fault of t ho silver. The treasury refuses to pay it out; that is all. In discussing these facts it is ad vantageous to know the facts and to state them with accuracy. Pjiksident Cleveland's sug gestion of a joint commission to consider the international fisher ies question and general recip rocity of trade between Canada and the United States has made a great stir ameng: the fishermen of Maine and Massachusetts. This interest desires to have dominion TibTT dutiable, as at present, and is willing to run the risk of whatever collisions between citizens of the .wo nations are bound to result from the exclusion of American vessels from the provincial inshore fisheries. It is taken for granted, naturally enough, that in case any arrangement is entered into by the two governments free impor tation of fish into the United States will be an element of it. The Republican says a canvass of the house on the silver coinage question indicates 197 representa tives opposed to suspension of the Bland dollar act and only 128 rep resentatives in favor. The situa tion in the senate is not much better, for it seems now that but 32 senators favor suspension, while 44- senators are believed to be against ir. The late Winthrop Watson Gilman in 183G purchased for $2, 000 lots in Milwaukee, which are now worth $1,000,000. He never spent a dollar to improve the pro perty and never erected a building in the city, but an old citizen says "he appeared regularly once a ear to collect his rent anil fight off taxes." An Iowa man has diseoered a remedy for rheumatism, consist ing of maple sugar dissolved in apple brandy. In less than a week after he made the discovery the whole neighborhood was limping around with the rheumatism. Cleveland is said to have made a new rule, evading the responsi bility of nominations to officp, and proposes to hold senators and members of congress strictly re sponsible for all appointments. The Washington correspondent of the Chronicle telegraphs that the lobby is working hard to pre vent the forfeiture of the land grants in Oregon and California railroads. SEW TO-BAY. Notice. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT I will .not pay any debts contracted In my name, or on ray account, except upon a -written order signed by me. J. F. BENDER. JO HADJA FRIEND IN THE CBOWD. Daring the Haight campaign ex Attorney General Jo Hamilton was among those stumping the state for the Democratic ticket. One evening Hamilton was billed for a meeting at Chico, and lie arrived there weary and worn out from continuous speak ing. "When the hour for the meeting arrived, General "Hamilton mounted the stand in a spiritless way and addressed the audience in a manner lacking his usual vigor. In those days the general enjoyed an oc casional "nip." He didn't care who knew it, and gin was his favorite bev erage. On the occasion spoken of a glass of water had been placed on the speaker's stand, as is the usual custom. The general would raise the tumbler occasionally, regard the liquid in a half hearted way, take a sip and proceed with his speech. Among those on the stand was Hon. H. M. La Rue, of this city. He ob served the general's manner and noticed how mournfully he looked upon the water, and requested a gentleman to go to a neighbor ing saloon and have the glass filled with gin. This was done and presently the general desired to clear ma voice wiiu anomer sip oi waier. He raised the glass with a lackadaisi cal air, when his olfactory nerves detected the odor of gin. A satisfied smile stole over hi3 expressive feat ures, ho swallowed the contents at one gulp, and smacking his lip3 lie said in an undertone to those on the stand; "Thank God, I have a friend in the crowd." The old war horse then turned to his audience, and for an hour he held them spell-bound with his eloquence, sarcasm and matchless numor. Tne meeting was a grand success, and in after years the general was willing to give full credit to that timely glass of gin. kacra incnto Jiee. A Good Place for Reform. The United States senate is nntu rally au expensive body of men. There are now, for instance, three clerks and messengers to every Sena tor, and it costs nearly $10,000 to 12,000 a year for the delivery of the senate mail. Hence it 13, perhaps, that when committees of this body travel they are considered legitimate game by hotel keepers and others. I am told that the senatorial party which attended the Hendricks funer al, upon arriving at Indianapolis, was driven to theDennison house. It oc cupied the parlors in that hotel for one hour. The bill for this accom modation, without refreshments of any character, as presented, was $250. There were only thirteen senators in the party. New York Tribune. BORN'. In Oystcmlle, W.
