"Wimmin is mighty curus crit ters," was his exordium. "This road is goin' to pay a dividend if tho latest a-gony only holds out." "What 'a-gony?'" wearily asked the reporter. "Why, this thicks- snap." "Thistle snap?" "Yes. Crowds on 'em go up every day to the 'prairie and gather thick sils bushels on 'em and lug 'em home ; but I dunno what they do with the pesky things bile 'era, mobbe, for the blood, or wash in the soup. Whatever 'tis, there's slash ins on 'em up iiere every day." As the driver had pumped himself dry on tho subject, and was prepar ing himself for another effort on a less abstruse topic, the reporter left tho car. Later, asking a lady acquaintance, who never failed to be in the swim, what there was to the driver's yarn, he was laughingty informed " that there was more truth than fiction in it. "You see," said she, ''we gather tho thistles before they are full-ripe, and when we have them home, go to work and shuck them. After you have the outside covering off you have before you a boll somewhat' re senibling a cotton boll, only not so white. You then fasten tliem by their stems to a string, and hang them out in the sun to dry. If the uind has done its duty you will have one of the loveliest pompons imagin able. Their soft, fluffy appearance, somewhat resembling the exquisitely downy covering of young chickens, makes an ornamental effect on a fan to be hung on the wall, or any other device your ingenuity may suggest. They will last six months at least, so you see we do not have our trouble for our pains. They are not the easiest thing in the world to handle, but if you persevere you will bo re warded, when your design is com pleted, by the delight of jour admir ing friends. There is no expenso attaching to tho work, so if it is not n-tiona it is rosaonauie Detroit Fieo Press. "uTueTljIooa." The term blue blood from the Span ish phrase sangre azul, is much used without a veiy clear idea of its signifi cation. Its meaning is not that the blood itself is blue (excepting that all venous blood has a bluish tinge), but that the persons or clas to whom the term is applied have skins so white and transparent that the veins show blue through them, and this is taken as a certain indication that the class or persons thus designated are without an admixture of races. Any one who has traveled in Spanish American countries, or in Spain, wheie the term originated, would see at once its applicability. The descendants of the Gothic conquer ors of Spain retain to this day the characteristics of their ancestors the white, transparent skin, blue oyes, and auburn or tawny hair, and their veins show blue through their cuti cle ; but in the case of an admixture of African or Moorish blood, the blue blood (veins) gradually disappear, until in case of a great preponder ance of the latter races, the veins show merely as ridges. Tourists in Mexico will'notice this peculiarity in all of the Mexican cities as well as in tho haciendas throughout that coun try, on account of the great admixt ure of Indian (Aztec, Toltec, and Tlascallan) blood in the population, and everywhere they will bnd that the people whoso veins show blue through the Bkin are the ruling clas3. Letter in Boston Transcript. The extent to which animals ap preciate color is an interesting but unsolved problem. It is being inves tigated by J. Graber, who has exper imented upon five mammals, seven birds, two reptiles, three amphibians, two fishes, three molluscs, twenty seven insects, two spiders, and two worms. He has found that the sense of color, as well as the power of per ceiving light, is much more widely distributed among animals than has been supposed, although the varia tions in tho sense of color and bright nebs in animals are great.
