The City of Hankow sailed from here for Liverpool wheat laden, on the 10th of November. It is to be hoped that she has met with no disaster. Rev. A. J. dinger's German, French and English school will have elaborate exercises at the German church at two o'clock this afternoon, on which occasion a fine programme will be rendering, included songs and recitations in the three languages. After the exercises there wiii be a distribution of presents. Phil Dawe, a prize fighter, has broughtsuit against the Seattle Post Intelligencer for 250, the amonnt of money put up by Billy Linn on the result of the Black Diamond mill. Dawe claims the fight and conse quently the stakes and for that reason has brought the suit. The case has been set for hearing on the 29th inst. On and after January 1, 183G, the fees on international postal money orders will be as follews: For sums not exceeding 810, 10c; over $10 and not exceeding $20, 20c; over $20 and not exceeding $30, 30c; over $30 and not exceeding U), 40c; over $iOand not exceeding $50, 50c. Tuis is a reduction of one-third from the present rates. The four men spoken of in yes terday's issue as havingbeen reported drowned are all right, having arrived at their destination in safety. The question now arises whose boat was it that drifted ashore, bottom upward atllwaco? It was that that first made surmise that accident had be fallen the party that left hero for the Wallicut last Monday. Scandinavian Lutheran service to-day in the Swedish church upper Astoria; at 10:30 a. l preaching in the Swedish language by the Rev. Lind from Vancouver, W. Our esteemed contemporary the Oregonian gives the word "hence' very wide latitudo of meaning in its shipping report. "Hence" usually means "from this place." For in stance The Astorian might with full truth say the Wm. H. Hesse which arrived "at New York on the 17th inst., "sailed hence." Whether our esteemed contemporary can con sistently with truth make the assertion that appears in its com mercial column of yesterday's issue is a question left to itself to docido. PERSONAL. Of the many thousand people who have come into The Astorian office in 1885, nono surprised us more than Capt. Beed of the Wm. if. Starbuck as he strode in on us yesterday even ing with his hearty "How are you f" We had supposed he wat going to eat his Christmas dinner with the Shanghai roosters and here ho is in Astoria inquiring after old friends and looking as hearty a3 though he had not circumnavigated the globe since he sailed from hero for New York, on the 12th of November, 1884. He sighted Shoalwater bay light on the 28th day after leaving Shanghai and shares the honors with Capt. Berry of tho Winnipeg which i3 tak ing on wheat at the O. B. & N. dock and which made the same trip m thirty days, arriving in a few weeks ago. Coming from the Orient across in to western longitude Capt. Beed wa3 ahead a day in his calculations and got here on Christmas eve instead of Christmas day, as yesterday, or what wo call yesterday, would have been on the other side of the Pacific. When he left here in November '81 he took with him Joo Langdon, Tiny Arragoni, Wilson and others, who all arrived in New York in good shape where they have met with varying fortnnes. A FOREIGN FLEET. THE ELECTRIC LIGHT. Nine vears ago on the ninth of this month J. C. Trullinger lit the first street lagp in Asteria: it was an oil concern such as has dimly dotted the streets during the past year to the ex clusion of the Astoria Gaslight com pany's better system, but it was a light, and beat no light all to pieces. Last night Mr. Trullinger lit the first electric light in Astoria. From coal oil to electricity is a long step, but it has been accom plished and our worthy mayor elect deserves credit for his enterprise and goaheadativeness. Two weekB ago he said to us, "I will put a light in front of your building Christmas eve," and he kept his word. At twen ty minutes to sevea last evening for the first time in the history of our city the electric light streamed out from a glass globe strung on wires stretched from The Astobiax build ing, making nil other lights look dim and attracting hundreds of specta tors who hurrying home with Christ mas presents for wife and children stopped to see the great luminous ball that shone like a sun lighting up the streets that it intersected. Uol. S. W. Blaisdell, the efficient superin tendent of the Iveith system, was on hand and expressed himself perfectly satisfied with the way tho enrrent worked, its brilliancy being so mani fest that it spoke for itself needing no further demonstration of its usefulness. Another light had been put up be tween Mr. Trullinger's office and his residence, lighting np that portion of the city, and plainly visible at Ft Stevens. The other eight lamps, only ten having so far arrived, were burn ing brightly at the mill, and will be distributed at various points through out tho city to-day if possible. The light in front of the office last evening was of a nominal 2,000 can dle pewer: the cylinder in the dy namo was running 525 revolutions a minute; it is capable of 1,250 revo lutions a minute, and when running at less than the maximum rate of speed i3 calculated to be able to furnish equal power to all the lights on the circuit. So far Mr. Trullinger, the proprietor of the new light, ha3 thirty-two subscribers and the finan cial outlook for the new enterprise is a3 brilliant as the light itself. The light lest night was calculated to be 300 candle power more than any of tho lights now in operation in Portland a fact which is of interest to Astorinns, who naturally like to have the best as long as it is going. Col. Blaisdell has spared no effort to make it a success, and to his energy, coupled with tho acknowledged excel lence of the Keith system, the success of the light is largely due. He has the contract for lighting the public buildings at Salem for $50,000, the measure being approved at the last session of the legislature, approved by the board of public works, which is good evidence of the excellence of the Keith system. Jast So. CHRISTMAS EVE AT THE CHURCHES. There is probably no tree that grows that bears as rich and varied fruit as the "Christmas tree," nor one whose fruit is more acceptable to the Juveniles. The sight presented at the various city churches last evening was a pleasant one. Bril liantly lighted and festooned, the churches were filled with old and young, and it was hard to say who derived the most pleasure, the par ents and patrons or tho children. At the M. E. church a very hand some tree filled with the choicest products of the season and lighted in a manner that showed the fruit to the best advantage, yielded its treasures to a happy group of Sun day school children and a few of more mature yeara. At the Presby terian church a similar scene was enacted, the gifte' being numerous and valuable, and at Grace church, which was elaborately decorated, a fitting Christmas service preceded the distribution of gifts from a well stocked tree that grew in the vestry. The giving of tokens of affection and remembrance is one of the at tributes, it may be said, of the day, and not the least among the joys that hallow the season is the kindly feelings toward our fellow mortals that fulfill the celestial song of the angels on Jndea's hills as they sang near nineteen centuries ago, "Peace on earth: good will to men." Wlio arc Yonr "Relation? In tho first generation a raau reck ons only two ancestors, his father and his mother. In tho second generation tho two are changed into four, since he had two grandfathers and two grandmothers. Each of these four had two parents, and in the third generation there are found to be eight ancestors, that is eight great-grandparents. In the fourth generation the number of ancestors is sixteen, in the fifth thirty-two, in the sixth sixty-four, in tho seventh 128, in the tenth 1,024, in tho twentieth 1,048.576, in the thirtieth 1,073,741,834, This may prove all the world's akin. The captains of thirty-one English vessels will eat their Christinas din ners in tho Columbia river. There are thirty-four vessels in the river, and of all that merchant fleet, but two-the SoiUhard and Starbuck fly tho American flag. It is evident that Uncle Sam believes in borrowing his neighbor's wasron when he wants to go to market. Tho number of American vessels yearly arriving here is decreasing. It looks now as tnougu tne lime was coming when the stars and stripes would be a marine curiosity in this port. In the season or '82-83, 30 American vessels and 59 English ves sels camehore; in'83-'8i. 17 American and 72 English vessels arrived iu; in 84-'S3, 17 American and 97 English crossed the bar bound in, and this season so far 53 English, 1 German, 1 Norwegian and 4 American vessels have dropped anchor in the bay. He made four speeches, and promised to be with his fellow-citizens again to-day. But oh, doctor, he looks nearly dead l" "Has he been in politics long?" "No, only last year. He worked hard for James McCaulay's elec tion." "Ho will get well, madam. He has a stomach for any disease if he worked for him !" Political life, of short or long dura tion, is very exhausting, as is evident from the great mortality whichrpre vails arnou public men. Ex TJ. S. Senator B. K. Bruce, who has been long in public life, says : "The other day, when stepping into a car at a crossing, I found Dr. within, who eyed me up and down in a surprised way, remarking: ' 'Why, Senator, how well you look.'" " 'Well, I feel pretty well,' I an swered." The doctor uttered an incredulous reply, when the Senator frankly told him, in answer to an inquiry, that it was Warner's Safe Cure which accom plished for him what the profession had failed to do.
