JiOSTOX DOG STOBIES.
Showing the Intelligence ef Really
Cnltared Anlraali.
There is a Newfoundland dog, Lion
by name, who gives daily proof of
his comprehension of what is said to
him. A lady called on his mistress
the other day. During her call Lion
came in rattier slyly, lay down on the
parlor carpet and went to sleep. The
conversation ran on, and the visitor
said finally :
"What a handsome Newfoundland
you have!"
Lion opened oue eye.
"Yes," said his mistress, "he is a
very good dog, and takes excellent
care of the children."
Lion opened the other eye and
wa ed his tail complacently to and
fro along the carpet.
"When the baby goes out he
always goes with her, and I feel per
fectly sure then no harm can come to
1 her," his mistress went on.
Lion's tail thumped up and down
violently on the carpet.
"And he is so gentle to them all,
and such a playmate and companion
to them, that we would not take a
thousand dollars for him."
Lion's tail now went up and down,
to and fro, and round and round
with great and undisguised glee.
"But," said his mistress, "Lion
has one serious fault."
Total subsidence of Lion's tail, to
gether with the appearance of an ex
pression of great concern on his face.
"He will come in here with his
dirty feet and lie down on the carpet,
w hen I have told him time and time
again that he mustn't do it."
Here Lion arose with an air of the
utmost dejection and humiliation and
slunk out of the room, with his lately
exuberant lail totally crestfallen.
A dog went every day, with a dime
given him by his master, to buy
meal for dinner at a butcher's shop.
The dog always presented his dime,
which went into the till, and then
his meat was given him and he
trotted home with it. One day the
butcher thought he would play a
trick on his customer, just to see
what he would do. So he put the
dime in his drawer and went about
other business. The dog waited
patiently a long time to be waited on,
showing some signs of impatience.
The butcher made no sign of serving
him. Finally the dog began to bark
violently, walking meanwhile from
the till to the ehopping-block.
"What do yon mean, you rascal?1'
shouted the "butcher. "Get out of
hete; get out!" And lie kicked the
dog out of the shop.
The dog lingered an instant, and
then trotted away in a determined
manner down the street. In a few
minutes he came back with a po
liceman. BosJtonRecord

"Young man," said a stern-looking
lady passenger on the Niagara
express'to the newsmonger who had
just tossed a novel in her lap, "didn't
I tell yon I wanted none of this
stuff?"
"Yes'in," retorted the newsman
with a crin, "they all say that."
"I'llllx him," said the lady, in a
fierce whisper, as he passed on, and,
opening the window, she sat back in
wait for the common nuisance. This
time he came around with an armful
of caramels. lie laid a half-pound
package in the lady's lap and was
passing on, when the latter seized
the box and coolly tossed it out of
the window.
"What d've mean?" asked the
nuisance.
"I'm throwing your goods out of
the window, and I'll do the same to
everything you give me," replied the
irate" passenger.
"You'll pay for it," said the man
savagely.
"Go ahead and collect," retorted
the other.

One of the neatest rotorts ever
made in Cambridge, Mass. not a
bad soil for good things was a brief
response lately given b' a young
lady to an undergraduate who of
fered her, with some hesitation, his
seat in a horse-car. She got in with
an elder companion. The car was
crowded, and two young men sat
near. One gave his seat at once to
the elder lady ; the other kept his
place. His friend asked him dis
guising it, however, in German
win' he did not give his placo to
the" young lady. He answered, in
the same language : "Because she is
not pretty enough." After a little
reflection, however, he, too, rose and
surrendered his seat. The young
lady took it, and thanked him in

The Scavengers or Panama.
The narrow, rocky point of laud on
which the city is built has a back
bone through the middle and slopes
on both sides and at the end down to
the water's edge. No city was ever
better situated for drainage. There
can be no apology for its not being
perfectly drained. On a fine morn
ing, when vou have taken a very
early cup of coffee, you saunter out
for a walk on tho ancient rampart
and encounter a procession of skinny
old hags of the serving class hob
bling along towards the beach with
capacious and malodorous vessels on
their heads. These arc about the
only scavengers that Panama pos
sesses. Their vocation is as old as
the city. Correspondence SanFran

IVherc Clothing In Cheap.
For years Americans have been in
the habit when abroad of buying
suits of clothes, thereby saving from
ten to forty per cent. Kow, it is said,
the importation into New York of
English-made suits on private orders
is a big businesF. The clothes are
delivered at the door of the pur
chaser, who is put to no trouble at
the custom-house, and the price is
generally two-thirds that charged by
American tailors. An agent takes
the measure and satisfaction is guar
