This you learn is noth ing short of ehoe-timber. These cords of wood will speedily be con verted into shoes of various sizes, at prices ranging all the- way from four to twenty cents. One feels quite ex alted in a pair of twenty cent shoes. The wood is called kin, and is very light. The closs nrc still further lightened by hollowing out the center. So, in point of fact, there is little truth in calling the shoes heavy, al though they appear so to the inex perienced observer. It must be ad mitted, though, that they are unrea sonably clumsj". Sometimes the shoes worn by the ladies are lac quered, and are fastened by a velvet band passing from either side over the lower part of the instep, and be tween the first and second toes. "With this same kind of wood is made bureaus provided with strong iron handles, and the whole box is adjust able in horizontal sections, one piled above another. Owing to the light ness of the wood these boxes may be filled with clothing and carried off on the shoulders of the coolie in case of fires, which so often vex the people of Tokio. Correspondence Chicago Times. An Uncertain Oracle. None, -we think, will deny to Emer son a singular power of sententious speech, and a singular purity and keenness of critical insight. To our mind, Emerson was rather an un certain oracle, some of whose sayings ring forever in the mind, while others only jingle there, than either a poet or a philosopher. There was too much strain m him for either. He rose too much on tiptoe for the poet, and was too broken in his insights for a philosopher's steady continuity of thought. . . Emerson lived in a pale, moonlit world of ideality, in which there was little that was adapted to tame the fierce passions and appease tho agonizing remorse of human nature. He was a voice to the pure intellect and the more fastid ious conscience of men, not a power of salvation for their wretchedness. But his gnomic wisdom will live long and startle many generations with its clear, high-thrilling notes. Lon don Spectator. " Can't you tell me, sir, where I might find a situation?" asked a voune man of a Chicago citizen. " I am a stranger here." " What at?" was the reply. " Oh, anything at all. I am not afraid of work." " Got any recommendations?" " Well, no; but I am industrious, I am honest, I go to church regularly, 1 don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't chew." " Ah, I see.
