fz) Ittc Unity Sstotfaw. ASTOBIA, OREGON: SATURDAY.., -DECEMBER 19. 1885 SILVER BEFORE TEE XATIOX. Tiie two standards the single one of gold and the double one of gold and silver are now before the nation. They form the lead ing questions that will attract the attention of congress, and which must in part be solved before much else will come before it. The question has been probably shelved by the letter of Tilden, suggesting that we need for coast defences and a powerful navy all the surplus revenue that the tariff can bring. This stumbling block may be said to have been dex terously removed from the path of Republicans and Democrats alike by the physically feeble but men tally powerful sage of Gramercy. There can, however, be no evasion or postponement of the silver is sue. It is one of the live problems of modern economics and will not down. The president and cabinet are already committed to the unpop ular side, and to the eastern ' as opposed to the western idea. In this, as in many other matters, originality and boldness of ideas eotnes from the west, which also supplied the means of carry ing on the civil war and of keeping up the supply of the precious metals to the modern world. What would have been done with out the two and a half billion dollars worth of gold and silver that it poured into the lap of the nation, it is hard to say. The western idea of this matter is en titled to more than ordinary consideration. It saved the nation and preserved democratic institu tions, and it untied what would have been some of the most knotty points of modern financo and commerce. The world at large owes a deep tribute to the west, to California, Nevada, Colorado, Montana, Idaho and Oregon. And the voice of the great west beyond the Mississippi in this as in other matters is united to that of the Pacific states. So also is that of the south outside of a comparative few who carry on business in the great cities and who are under the control of the national banks and mac oi capitalists ana corporations of every ilk and denomination. J And we should not, perhaps, here except the people of the east, as we believe that the true people of the east, the bone and sinew, the workers of the land, are with us in this fight. The east, and also certain sec tions of the south, insist on a pro tective tariff. Now, there is no reason why iron should be pro tected and cotton cloth, and why silver should not, more especially when we ask for no tariff, but mere common justice, that free coinage of the metal that does so much to support the great indus tries of the west, and that can do so much to support those of the nation. If we cannot have free coinage of silver, or at least if we cannot have the law left as. it is, by what right can the producers of iron, cotton, etc., ask to be pro tected. "We do not ask for con gress to protect us in asking what we deem reasonable prices for pur goods, at the same time that we are allowed to import the pauper labor of the world so as to fill our coffers to overflowing. "We only ask justice, while we pay the workers in our mines the highest wages known in the whole world "We are thus alike the champion of capital and labor. The cry against the silver dol lar is the cry of the capitalist, of the national bank stockholder, who wishes - to make the gold twenty purchase double what it did before, and who wishes to get rid of all restrictions and derive interest on the whole of the bonds deposited to secure his circulation instead of nine-tenths of them as before. The man who draws double interest from the people wishes at the same time to render hi money worth double its pres- ent face value in the markets of the world. Even that face value is much more than it was before, but still he is not satisfied. Bv right and law he should be paid his interest in silver as well as gold, but then the currency would not be contracted, and he could not obtain double his proper quota of the people's sweat and blood. We hope that the majority in congress will not fall down and worship the golden calf of mono metalism, but that it will stand up 2nd fight the battles of the peo ple, whom it is supposed to rep resent. The Tories are said to be dis gusted at the fact that most of the Parnellites selected to sit in the next house are poor men, and they express sorrow and anger at the financial assistance given by America to the Parnellites in breaking down the parliamentary system of non-payment of mem bers, which has so long confined the power of legislation exclusively to the rich. Aristocratic wealth feels unequal to a contest with plebeian brains. A New York man lias com mitted forgeries enough to send him to prison for 200 years. But he need not be discouraged. If he serves the time, he will get out in time for the dedication of the first Grant monument. All signs point to the probable laying of a cable to England in connection with the Canadian Pa cific's telegraph system, and an other cable from British Colum bia, to connect with India, China and Japan.
