THE ".FOOT BURSEES."
A Tale of Arlcansas Dnrlas tke
"War of the Rebellion.
There are many people in Arkansas
whorememberthefollowinj; incident:
During the war certain parts of Ar
kansas were infested with "foot
burners." These wretches cared not
for the success of either armv, but
wore intent upon robbery. Generally
the "foot burner" lived near, or at
least was well acquainted in the
neighborhood where he operated,
lie knew who had n, jnoy. When the
"foot burners" asked a man to re
veal the hiding place of his valuables
and were refused, they seized the
man, bound him, and proceeded to
roast his feet.
One day, in the northern part of
this State, Judge Grimes, who was
known to be wealthy, carried a
heavv. sauare box- to k woll t-nn-n
preacher tho Rev. Mr. Aldrich
ana sam:
"Brother Aldrich. T nm crninc
away, and I wish you would keep
jMia uu. uuui x reiurn. iui i. wane
is your promise to keep it."
"I'll be running risk in taking it,"
Mr. Aldrich replied, "but to accommo
date you, I will take it and secrete it
until your return."
The iudj?e thanked him in1 tnnV
his departure. A few weeks later
a party of "foot burners" went to tho
Ercacher's house and demanded the
os.
"I cannot give it to you," replied
Aldrich.
"Seize him, men."
The preacher was tied and thrown
on the ground. A fire was kindled
and the unfortunate man's feet wero
thrust into the blaze.
"Now will you tell us where that
box is?"
"No."
They threw more fuel on the Are.
Finally, seeing that he would not
tell, the wretches went away. For a
Jens: time it was thought that the
preacher would die. Both feet were
burned off, and during many months
he was confined to his bed.
Shortly after the war closed the
judge returned home. The next day
after his arrival, the preacher had
the bos brought from its hiding
place, then, after the old man was
placed in a buggy, he drove to the
judge's house, and when tne judge
had come out to the gate, he said:
"Here is your box, sir. It nearly
cost me my life, and I shall never be
able to walk again, but I have kept
the promise I made yon."
"1 am very sorry to know that the
foot-burners got a hold of you," said
the judge, "but why didn't you give
them the box?"
"Because I knew that its contents
were valuable "
"Oh, no. my dear sir, the box is
full of hoi e-shoe nails."
Tho scoundrel had given the
preacher a box full of nails, in order
that the attention of the foot burners
might be drawn from himself, sc
that he could, with his money, leave
tl ie neighborhood. ArkansawTrat

It appears that the sandy wastes

be utilized. The thrifty farmers of
Suffolk County are experimenting in
raising peanuts on this hitherto un

SIMMONS
LIVER REGULATOR
For all Diseases of the
Liver, Sidneys, Stomach and Spleen.
This purely vegetable pre
paration, novr so celebrated as a
Family Medicine, originated in
the South in 1838. It acts
gently on the Bowels and
Kidneys and corrects the
action of the Lirer, and is, there,
fore, the best preparatory
medicine, whaterer the sick
ness may prove to be. In all
common diseases it will, un
assisted by any other medi
cine, effect a speedy cure.
The Regulator Is safe to administer in any
condition of the system, and under no circum
stances can it do barm. It will invigorate
like a class of wine, but is no intoxicating bever
age to lead to intemperance; will promote di
gestion, dissipate headache, and Gener
ally tone up the system. The dose is small,
not unpleasant, and its virtues undoubted.
No loss of time, no Inter
ruption or stoppage of
business while taking the
Regulator.
Children complaining of
Colic, Headache, or Stick
Stomach, a teaspoonful or
more will give relief.
If taken occasionally by pa
dents exposed to MALARIA,
will expel the poison and protect
them from attack.
A roYSICIAVa OPDilOX.
I have been practicing medicine for twenty years,
and have never been able to put up a vegetable
compound that would, like Simmons Liver Regu
lator, promptly and effectively move the Liver to
action, nd at the same time aid (instead of weak
ening) the digestive and assimilative powers of the
system. L. M. Hiktom, M. D. .Washington, Ark.
