Ladd has sunk an artesian well 1,400 feet deep at East Portland and struck quicksand which makes ultimate success improbable. Thus far the well has cost $14,000. Wouldn't it be better to give the job of knitting nets to white men. in stead of to Ohinameu? Purely as a matter of policy the white man should be given the preference when he comes in competition with the Mongolian. This matter is worth considering. The villain in the piece gets the wages of sin, while the others are rewarded with happiness after a series of misfor tunes and disappointments that are most appalling. The cast was excel lent and the acting was capital. S. F. Post. Mr. Knowles Caned. Just before Senator-elect John H. "Mitchell left for the east yesterday, he presented Mr. C. W. Kwowles. one of the proprietors of the St Charles liotel, with a magnificent ebony, gold lieaded caue, bearing the inscription "C. W. Knowles from John H. Mit chell." The latter in making the presentation said it was a slight token of the high esteem with which he regarded Mr. Knowles. CURRENT TOPICS. Tho federation ot labor unions of the United States and Canada, in ses sion at "Washington, has passed a resolution providing that tho rule making eight hours a day's work shall take effect May 1st, 1886. At a recent meeting of the Albany committee appointed to raise the sub sidy of S40.000 for tho Oregon Pacific railroad, all tho amounts subscribed were footed up, and it was found that there yet remained but a few thousand dollars to completo the amount Senator McPherson has presented in congress a joint resolution of the legislature of New Jersey, recom mending a congressional inquiry into the fitness of a portion of the the ter ritory of Alaska for the purpose of a penal colony for long term or life term conviots which has been re ferred to the committee on territo ries. Yanderbilt, tho richest man in America, who was buried yesterday, was peculiarly reticent as to the dis position of bis property, but after many interviews with his intimate friends it is evident that the general belief is that Cornelius will be given the bulk of the fortune, in accordance with the commodore's known wish that one member of each succeeding generation should be endowed. It is remarkable how high Cornelius now stands in the estimation of men. Yesterday he was nobody; to-day he is a king. Everybody speaks now of him, of his conservatism and his ex ecutive ability. The North American union of radicals, with head quarters in Mil waukee, Wis., has issued a memorial to congress, asking that the constitu tion be amended so as to abolish the office of president. The memorial proposes to ve3t tho executive power of tho government in an executive council to be chosen by congress. It is claimed that the president is a king, clothed with greater power than any European sovereign, except the czar of Russia, and that the legis lative power cannot enlargo or dim inish the executive capacity. The president's powers are recited nt great length, and instances ot despot ic authority pointed out in detail. Senator Edmunds has a bill in con gress to put the Mormons in chan cery. It proposes that tho act of the legislature under which the church of tho Latter Day Saints, was incor porated, shall bo repealed and an nulled, and that the temporal affairs of the church shall bo managed by a board of trustees, appointed by the president of the United States, by and with the consent of the senate, and shall close up the institution as rapidly as possible. Under direction of the secretary of the interior, tho attorney general is directed to insti tute and prosecute proceedings to forfeit and escheat to the United States all property owned by the the Mormon church, except buildings used for public worship, and the sec retary of the interior is directed to sell and invest the proceeds for tho binefit of public schools.
