ARTSTOCRACY VERSUS THE PEO
PLE. Tub London Times has already
come out for a union of the
whigs, or the aristocrats of the
liberal party, and the tones. This
was something that was foreseen
at a long distance from England
before the Times spoke. The pre
tense of the coalition is that it is
necessary to defeat Parnell. But,
says the Bulletin, it would have
been suggested if that politician
was not in the field at all. The
way the notion is put up is this:
It has been the custom for Eng
land to govern Ireland. Any at
tempt to disturbe that relation so
as to allow Ireland to govern her
self, is called a breaking up of
the empire. This is a propo
sition, however, that will not stand
analysis. Conceding self-government
to the neighboring isles is
not a breaking up ol the empire.
On the contrary it would most
probably result in its consolida
tion. The system which binds the
empire in Australia ana uanaua
cannot be said to divide it across
the channel. Some kind of a
stalkinghorse was aeaded in the
present emergency. Parnell, it is
thought, can be utilized for that
purpose. The real danger is the
growth of the popular party which
has some wild notions on the sub
ject of property and other things.
The real coalition is on the part of
the upholders of caste and priv
ilege, wherever found in the old
parties, against the new party of
the people. The Irish cause, it is
thought, can be made to obscure
the real issue. Perhaps it can for
a time. But the day is not very
far distant when real lines will be
drawm.
ABSORBED.
Pataqoxia, a country in South
America familiar to every student
of geography ancTethnology, has
been obliterated from the map.
A year or two ago both the Argen
tine Confederation and Chile began
to make aggressive movements to
the southward. The forces of the
two republics came in contact, and
there was at one time imminent
danger of war. Some collision did
actually occur, and only the great
est forbearance on tho part of the
two governments prevented the
outbreak of hostilities between
them. They at length came to-!
gether and agreed to a peaceable
division of the country which each
had manifested a desire to monop
olize. Chile seems to have the
best of the bargain, as she has tak
en all of the western coast of Pat
agonia to the extremo southern
point of the continent, including
the straits of Magellan, the island
group of Terra del Fuego, and all
the islands on the Pacific coast.
The Argentine Confederation has
tho balance of t:i country
irotn the eastern sUpe of
the Andes to the Ail.mtio. The
islands on the westr-m coasr which
fall to the py.-3i.'ssu j of Chile are
said to contain valuable mined of
coal and mct-i:.". !';" sections
which are occupied by thr Argen
tine government 'consists uf broad
elevated pampas, on which vast
herds of cattle, sheep and horses
graze, and which are regarded as
very valuable. Chile, by occupy
ing advantageous points in the
Straits of Magellan, can also com
mand entirely the commerce be
tween the Atlantic and the Pacific
Oceans, or drive it beyond and
around Cape Horn. This material
modification of territorial divi
sions in South America is one of
the most sweeping revolutions
that has recently occured in the
geography of tho world, and, at
the same time, .the quietest.
It is announced that an English
inventor has lately devised a
method of coating tin with a ma
terial resembling glass, which re
moves all danger of poison in
canned goods, and the adoption of
his process is likely soon to be
come general.
A Texas doctor gives the Med
ical Bulletin an account of the
ease with which doctors are made
in that state. He took a sis-hour
ride with a Texan villager, "who
asked him a great many questions
about the remedies used for cer
tain diseases then prevailing in
that locality. On the following
week ho had occasion to visit &
neighboring village, where he
found his recent companion with
his shingle out as a full fledged
doctor. He had graduated in
that six-hour ride.
