WHEN" tfAKINCx A CALL.
The Arrangement of Chairs a Very
Important Matter.
Wliere do people wish to sit down
when tney make a call? IMear ttietr
hostess. What arrangement suits a
small company who might prove
congenial friends if they had any
opportunity really to discover each
other? Near together, not at points,
equally distant from a common cen
ter. Shall an affectionate family sit
Indian fashion, round the edge of
their home, each in his own fixed
place? The result is certain to be
Indian silence and monotony. Chairs
being to sit in, it follows that the
use for w hich the room is intended is
the first question to be asked. The
parlor, uhich, in most families, is
the quiet corner where a guest may
spend an uninterrupted half hour
during a social call, needs some easy
chairs, lest tho wearied visitor never
comes again ; but it needs, still more,
light chairs and more than one
that can easily bo moved about.
"Whether the easy chairs are cane
seat rockers or plush divans, their
positions cannot readily be changed,
while the light chair, that can be
taken in the hand and carried from
one corner to the other, will furnish
tho opportunity for sociability two or
three times in "a single call, perhaps.
It must be a chair that can bo car
ried ; it is not enough that it roll on
castors, for it is still clumsy and
heavy, and the effort necessary to
alter its position will often prevent
the change altogether.
A clever woman, to whom the
groat world was a second nature,
once said that sho always observed
how the chairs were left in a drawing-room
where several people had
been sitting, and put them in tho
same position next time. Thi3 is tho
secret of success with chairs. Dis
pose them so that the persons who
fall into them shall sit down in tho
places most natural and satisfactory.
Anange a group of chairs near the
door, where the casual caller will
drop into one and the hostess into
another, and, without realizing the
fact that they are sitting near to
gether, will yet be placed in the best
possible position for a little conver
sation. If it is a large drawing-room,
constantly used, by a number of peo
p'fj, multiply these groups of seats,
not in ridiculous aesthetic situations,
with the sofa3 at right angles to
the room, but conveniently and
naturally. Sit down in the chairs,
if necessary, and see in what posi
tion you would like to find your
neighbor. If you remember that the
chairs are to sit in, not to look at,
not even to give color, you will place
them as people will wish to find
them, ana, without knowing why,
your drawing-room will often be full
of people, and its reputation will go
abroad. Blade.
A Delicate Gebm. The dreaded
comma bacillus, the germ of cholera,
has proven to be a quite tender or
ganism, which is quickly killed by
drying, by a heat of 140 Fahren
heit, and by many alkalies and acids.
The process of putrefaction also de
stroys it in a few hours. In the hu
man body the bacillus lives, on the
average, only six day3 after the at
tack ; in moist earth it survives from
fourteen to sixteen days ; in distilled
water, twenty day3; in sea water,
sixty-four to eighty-one days ; and in
the bilge-water of an iron ship,
thirty-two days. After these inter
vals the danger of contagion ceases.
In common with other disease germs,
the bacillus appears to have a re
markable power of enduring cold.
George Marden moves that Spain
be renamed and called Cholerado.
Are you ready for the question?
