Me bH417 Beading of Sullivan puts us in mind of a little affair that occurred the last time ho was hero, and which never, we believe, got into print. After the show at the opera-honse was over, Sullivan went over to tho St. George bar and there was intro duced to a gentleman of this city, who is not only a very polite and affa ble man, but a fine judgo of whisky. After talking awhile he suggested to John that he take a drink out of his favorite bottle. John did so, and liked it very much and, after a littlo more talk, he in turn suggested that they try it again. They did so. This was kept up till they had ta ken eight rounds of drinks, and about the time the last one got to tho right spot, a brilliant idea struck our friend. John," said he, " can you giveme that thousand dollars now, or would you rather wait till morning?" "What thousand?" "The thousand dollars you owe me." "I don't owe you a cent." " You bet you do. You owo me a thousand dollars." "What for?" "Didn't you offer a thousand dol lars to anybody who would stand up before you for three rounds?" "You betl did," said John, a scowl coming to his brow. " Well, you just bet I've stood up before you for eight rounds, and I'm feeling a d d sight better than I did when I commenced." They shook hands and immedi ately got into position for the ninth round. Evansville Argus. Beaalmlmm aaa the Frees. Is the existence of a spirit of cyn ical pessimism in this country due to "the method that newspapers take for reporting crimes?" We doubt it. We have heard it attributed some times to the worldliness of the clergy, and their apparent lack of religious belief. If pessimism is due to news paper publications -why does it take such a hold on countries where the only press permitted is largely offi cial ?Boston Transcript. Tke JPkreaelealst Still Aareaa.
