The enormous multiplication of
books, newspapers and periodicals,
has made moderns generally more a
reading than a talking people. It
was old Thomas Fuller "who said:
"The study of books is a languish
ing and feeble motion, that heats not,
whereas conference teaches and ex
ercises at once. I love stout expres
sions among brave men, and to have
them speak as they think." It is
also among the Proverbs that "iron
sharpeneth iron ; so a man sharpen
eth the countenance of his friend."
While it is admitted that conversa
tion cannot be taught, it has been
demonstrated that it is proner to lay
down certain general rules by which
the talker may at least promote the
comfort of the company in which he
finds himself. Here are some con
densations in point :
Do not talk "shop."
Variety is the life of conversation.
Speak of vourself as little as possible.
Do not mistake the flippant for tho
witty.
Beware of an impatience to inter
rupt others.
Beware of uneasiness when others
interrupt you.
To listen well is almost as indis
pensable a3 to talk well.
Nobody can be expected to talk
sense in a ball-room.
Choose a conversational style
adapted to your company. '
The age of Great Talk has been
succeeded by that of SmallTalk.
There are persons who speak a
moment before they have thought.
In a general conversation never
attempt to joke with your superiors.
The basis of all ordinary social
conversation must necessarily be
small talk.
Be patient when elderly peoplo
are garrulous. Respect old age even
when it twaddles.
No gentleman will sprinkle his
conversation with indelicate allusions
or double meanings.
To use many circumstances ere you
come to matter is wearisome ; and to
use none at all is blunt.
A specialist can never make a good
conversationalist. His mind runs
always in the same groove.
We should never say anything
which any of the company can rea
sonably wish we had left unsaid.
It is a great misfortune not to have
wit enough to talk well nor judgment
enough to hold your tongue.
Do not cive another, even if it be
a better, version of a story already
told by one of your companions.
Do not talk too much. Even those
who gathered round Macaulay longed
occasionally for "flashes of silence."
Never "make fun" of personal de
fects. Think of the children who
mocked at Elijah : "Go up, thou bald
head, go."
Avoid elaborate discussion of polit
ical and religious subjects, as it can
not fail to awaken feelings of irrita
tion and dislike.
The true spirit of conversation con
sists less in displaying one's own
cleverness than in bringing out tho
cleverness of others.
A good thing loses its goodness on
repetition, just as claret and olives
pall upon the palate when they enter
into our daily fare.
The most successful talker is the
man or woman who has most to say
that is sensible and entertaining on
the greatest number of subjects.
No style of conversation is more
acceptable than the narrative, be
cause this does not carry an air of
superiority over the rest of the cora-
panv.
However much in the right it is
good to yield when you perceive that
persistence in ventilating your opin
ions will result in open variance.
Be careful how' you distribute
praise or blame to your neighbors.
Some of those present will have their
prejudices or their partialities, which
you will be sure to offend.
The Ticking of a deck.
Slight though the ticking of a clock
may be, its sudden cessation has a
wonderful influence upon the in
mates of a room in which the time
keeper is located. A dim realization
of something wrong steals over the
senses a feeling as if something of
value had been lost, or a friend had
gone away, perhaps never to return,
or as if some of the children were
sick, until suddenly some one looks
up and exclaims: "Why, the clock's
stopped I" And immediately the ill-
ueuned forebodings dissipate, the
little shadow of gloom melts away,
and as the winding-up process is
completed, and the cheery ticking
recommences, the family circle re
gains its wonted buoyancy of spirits
and the members wonder what it
was that made them feel so gloomy
a few moments before.
Hungar and conversation are the
best dinker sauce.
Whoever makes the fewest persons
uneasy is the best bred in the com
pany." Nothing should appear at a cold
collation ,which requires carving or
cannot b easily helped.
The choice of a wife or husband is
the most erious thing that a man or
woman has to decide upon.
Do not garch your table napkins.
A napkin fiat is not soft and pliable
is manifestly unfit for its purpose.
At a picaic never use your best
plate, glasSror china; so shall you
avoid mucjrheart-burning and irrita
tion of temper.
Absence Quakes the heart of host
and guest grow fonder; they relish
one another all the better for anjn
terval of separation.
Speaking of dinners, it is said that
"the politician who keeps a good
cook is a tdwerof strength to his
party."
Marriago is the mother of the
world. It preserves kingdoms and
fills cities and churches, and Heaven
itself. Jeremy Taylor.
When a woman is very pretty one
never looks at her dress ; and when
the dress is very striking one forgets
to look at the woman.
There can be no surer proof of low
origin, or 01 an innate meanness 01
disposition, tnan to De always talc
ing ana unuKiug ol using guuiecu
The ball is the paradise of youth
and love. When we have, turned
forty we regard it as a weariness and
a delusion, and denounce it, perhaps,
as fit only for fools.
Conversation should be series of
pauses linked together by a few suit
able words; many people,Jhowever,
in their anxiety to bringout their
words, forget their pauses.
Let your talk be always adapted
carefull v to time and place. Don't
prate about homeopathy to a doctor,
or the blessings of celibacy to a young
lady engaged to be married.
Plain English and pure, from the
well undoflled of the best writers
and speakers let that be the vehicle
in which your opinions are conveyed,
and the plainer and purer the better.
Wear little jewelry. A man never
looks to less advantage than when
he enters into competition with a
jeweler's show window. The love of
charms, and trinkets, and rings is a
survival of barbarism.
Be generous, be a gentleman; that
is, be equitable, refined, genial, just
in the interpretation of motives,
prompt to forbear and forgive,
Jatient, humane, tender, courteous,
f thou dost seek to realize the lofti
est excellences of the Christian char
acter and humbly strive3t to imitate
the Master's charity, patience, en
durance, and self-sacrifice, then shall
it bo said of thee, as Tennyson lias
said of his friend, Arthur Hallam:
