.1 SOVEL IDEA.
NEW TO-DAY.
KuGAirmxo the election of a
resident of the senate next Mon
day, a Washington dispatch says
that the Republican senators, or
at least a number of their leaders,
have arrived at the conclusion that
for prudential; as well-as political
reasons, it would be wiser to elect
a Democrat than to bestow tne
honor upon one of their own num
ber. This idea is inspired by a
number of officers of the Grand
Army of the Republic of the Dis
trict of Columbia, and has been
put in the form of a circular ad
dressed to Republican senators.
It says the vacant chair in the sen
ate should be filled by one in ac

order to allay excitement and ap- Mjsnad tdg
prehension of danger to give the
office to a Democrat.
It is said that the originators of
this circular called upon Gen. Lo
gan and had a long interview up
on the tonic. Gen Lotfin is un
derstood to have been very favor
bly impressed with the logic
embodied in the address, and in
effect quite agreed therewith. He
oo;ri nmnnor niher thinrs. that
Senator Harris, or Senator Cock
rell would make a good presiding
officer, and under the present con
dition of affairs it might be well to
elect one of these gentlemen.
The address will probably be
made public to-day. One of the
main points urged in it is that if a
Republican should be presiding
officer of the senate and any fanat
ic or any lunatic should make an
effort to harm the president, the
Republican party would inevitably
have to bear the odium, and that
the interests of the country and
the ultimate good of the Repub
lican party unite in -demanding
the sacrifice of political feeling on
the part of Republican senators.
The defense of the dominion
o-overnment on the execution of
Riel is published in the shape of a
report to the privy council by the
minister of justice, Sir Alexander
Campbell, and reviews the whole
subject in an exhaustive manner,
rlpf.lsirino- that according to the
o " . I
authorities of the Roman Catholic
church in the northwest Riel was
not entitled to any mercy, his mo-
tives being purely mercenary, he
being willing at any time to se.ll
out his followers for a few thou
sand dollars. It says the question
as to his sanity is satisfactorily
settled. The report denounces
Riel for having raised the Indian
tribes of the northwest, and for
having been the direct cause of
the frightful massacre of a large
number of persons, including two
Catholic missionaries.
