The same question exists that ex isted last week, and one that can only be decided by the electien: shall the tax payers, the property owners run this city or not. If all the tax payers, and the property owners be longed to the Republican party or the Democratic party exclusively, the matter would become a party ques tion. Under the circumstances it becomes a question for every man of common sense who is interested in the welfare of the city to ask himself and vote accordingly. . Eoman Catholic Services. The play was a good one, excellent in plot, dialogue and construction. It was admirably personated. To the mind of the writer the second act in the scene be tween "Henry Beauclerc," "Julian Beauclero" and "County Orloff" was the best in every respect. These three characters were admirably sus tained by Messrs. W. H. Thompson, Harry Mainhall and Frank Wills, and the scene referred to was about as finished a bit of artistic impersona tion as has ever been witnessed on thatstige. The ladies renewed the favorable impression created by their appear ance the former evening. The com pany deserved better houses "than they drew. While it is not palatable to say it, it would seem as though a snide show did better in Astoria than a first-class company such as appeared here last Friday and yester day evenings. Considerable interest was mani fested in both wards yesterday in the result of the selection of delegates to the Republican city convention to be held for the purpose of nominating city officers to bo voted for at the coming municipal election. Voting did not appear to be con fined exclusively to Republicans, a certain or uncertain degree of elas ticity being allowed regarding per sonal predilections. The chief inter est seemed to center on the matter of ohief of police, and it is believed the result of yesterday's contest will oc casion as mixed a vofo on election day as at the Republican primaries yesterday. Following are the tickets chosen in both wards: first ward. R. N. Carnahan, Chas. Heilborn, C. H. Cooper, W. E. Dement, A. C. Fish er, A. G. Spexarth, J. F. Ferchen, J. W. Gearhart, J. F. Halloran, J. V. Conn, F. Sherman, F. L. Parker. E. R. Hawes. Henry Spellmeir, N. E. Goodell. There is a tie between C. P. Upshur and R. R. Spedden, each receiving 70 votes. There were 189 votes cast in the ward. SECOXD WARD. Aug. Danielson, Theo. Bracker, D. Morgan, Jr. E. A. Taylor, Jas. W. Welch, L. W. HoltRobt. Carruthers, S. M. Morton, E. Mannula. There i3 a tie between I. W. Case and J. A. Fulton, each receiving '39 votes. There were 90 votes oast in the ward. Plan of the Canadian racifle. A Boston paper says: ''Secret ne gotiations that have long been car ried on, and are now practically com pleted, will bring about before many days the consummation of one of the greatest railway enterprises in the world. The result attained is a grand transcontinental railway connecting Port Moodv on thePaoific ocean with Boston and Portland on the Atlantic ocean, and extending away into the provinces. The only link lacking in the chain is a new bridge across the St. Lawrence river at Lachine, now being built under contract for the Canadian Pacific, and the construc tion of less than twenty miles of road will complete the connection. The new scheme will bring the immense traffic of the Indies, of the far north west and the Canadas by the shortest route through the notch of the White mountains direct by the Boston fc Maine road to Boston and Portland, and thence to the province and Eu rope. Ever since the consolidation of the Eastern and Boston Sc Maine roads this plan has been quietly pur sued, and public attention was first attracted to it by the heavy move ment in the bonds of the Portland & Ogdesburg within the last few days." Giving the Snap Away. San Francisco, Nov. 27. Ohina men who testify before the grand ju ry engaged in investigating Chinese frauds do not always stand by each other with patriotio devotion. One of them, who was lately examined, gave away his compatriots in a most alarming manner. He said that Moy, the late interpreter of the distriot court, was in the habit of making $100 or 8500 from every Chinawoman he landed. The interpreter would tell the women ho could get them through, but that he had to divide with the officers, giving so much to policemen, so much to the "city at torney," and so on through the list. By these ingenious romances Moy amassed wealth, compared to which even his enormous legitimate profits were insignificant Witness said he did not like to see Moy making so much money. He went on to tell of a syndicate of Chinamen who made a business of selling certificates. They would send information to Hong Kong to guide the intended immigrant, so he would know how to act when the officers examined him, and what answers to make. These certificate brokers were mostly highbinders, and terrorized any that might think of betraying their methods. Aunouureraent. James P. Hixsou, representing the well known merchant tailoring es tablishment of Schafer & Co., No. 11 Montgomery street, San Francisco, has arrived and will remain two days at the Ocoident Hotel, where he has on exhibitiou a full line of sample goods for gentlemen's wear, suitable for the present and com ing seasoD, Those wishing first class custom made clothing, will do well to give him a call. He is the only sci entific, practical cutter, who has taken diplomas in the principal cities of the east, for correct measur ing, skilful labor and perfect fit, and who is soliciting orders. There are a great many adventurers traveling who are not tailors and who do not represent a responsible house, who cannot take a correct measure, sub jecting the public to great annoyance and loss. It seems to us that some one might do his fellow-citizens a good turn by telling the truth about the firo ex tinguishing hand grenades, which are sold now in such enormous quan tities. There are so many varieties of them that wo will not attempt to say what they are all filled with, but, so far as we have been able to ascer tain, not one gives out, when thrown into a fire, any of those efficacious gases which they are popularly sup posed to contain, and we have yet to hear of any which possess more virtue than inheres in a bottle of salt and water, or of alum solution; while the disadvantages of their employ ment are considerable. It is not many weeks since smoke was dis covered, early one morning, proceed ing from between the floor boards in our own office, and a rush was made for the hand grenades by the few persons who happened to be in the building. A washstand with two faucets stood within ten feet of the smoking floor-boards, just outside the door of the room, and pails and pans were not far off; but instead of availing themselves of this obvious means of attacking the faint threads of smoke which were alone visibie, the amateur firemen threw their grenndes apparently at random over the room and the adjoining closet, completely ruining with dark chemi cal stains every object of value upon which the liquid contained in them was spattered, but of course produc ing no effect upon the fire beneath the flooring. Finally a four inoh hose was dragged into the room from a stand pipe near by, and after cutting a hole through the floor, a stream was turned in large enough to drown a lively conflagration, completing the destruction which the perfectly use less hand grenades had begun, and like them, accomplishing nothing whioh two quarts of water, applied with a little common sense would not have dona equally well, without incidentally spoiling a considerable part of the contents of tho office, as well as of that under it. If the gren ades contained nothing but water in n convenient shape, there would be no great objection to them; but the mystery of the ingredients which fill them gives them a false value in the eyes of the ignorant, who forget all about using the water pails close at hand in their anxiety to invoke the mighty genii of the blue bottles, and thus throw away the precious oppor tunity, which in fires, never comes but once, and lasts only a few seconds. The Avxer. Architect' FELT VERY NATURAL. A poor but honest editor was fish ing on a free boat off the Florida coast last month. He laid his lina aside for a moment while he took out his notebook to jot down a few surging thoughts. Suddenly an octopus, with ann3 thirty feet long, reached up over the side of the boat and grappled him with three of its long, terrible clinging arms. A cry of horror rose from all the crew, but the editor wrote calmly on. The octopus reached up two more arms and took a firmer grip, and began to pull. Every man ou board fainted, but the editor sat perfectly still and calmly wrote on. When the crew recovered con sciousness tho astonished sailors saw the exhausted octopus slowly sinking into the ocean depths, with five strained and disabled arms hanging limp and helpless, while the editor was just raising his eyes from his notebook. ''Bless me!" he said. "Where am I? Oh, ye3 I see! Did any one touch my shoulder? I de clare I thought I was back in the old sanctum, with old 'Veritas' on one side and 'Constant Header' on the other, holding me fast while they itold me how to run the Fourth ward caucus, and what the city council ought to do in the matter of the Oak street sewer. Ha! I must have been dreaming." And he calmly went on with his thoughts. Jirook lyn Eagle. A Life Saving Present. Mr. M. E. Savins; Life at Sea. A prominent merchant informed us thatone of his ships bound to Cali fornia rescued eighteen men from a wreck. Another ship was spoken and two of the shipwrecked men were transferred to her. Her captain would not receive any more on the plea of economy. Imagine the aston ishment of the owner of the first ship when he received a bill for the pro visions furnished to two men whom his captain had transferred. The ex pense of feeding the sixteen men the first ship had on board over fifty days, and the two men she trans ferred, fell upon the merchant whose ship had saved them all. This is an other instance of tho injustice of throwing the expense of saving life at sea upon shipowners. Congress ought to make an annual appropria tion to meet all such cases. The British board of trade have done so mauv years. Boston Traveler, Nov. TJ. Wild Cherry aud Tar.
