C2J $Iw gaftg sforimt. ASTORIA. OREGON: SUNDAY .NOVEMBER IX. 1S35 THE SAME OLD QUESTIOX. "No taxation without represen tation," was the cry of the colo nists in 1774." It is as just, as reasonable, in 1885. It is said here by not a few, "Wiry should we of Clatsop be compelled or obliged, or even expected to pay where we receive no proportionate acknowledgement of our exist ence? We are in Oregon, but not of Oregon. We are snubbed and sat on, and set down on; we are denied representation, cut off with one-tenth of what is our just due, our actual right, and yet taxed as though we had equal representa tion with our sister counties of the commonwealth." Taxation with out representation was unjust in the eighteenth century, it is equally unjust in the nineteenth. The American colonists along the At lantic seaboard refused to accede to the demands of their royal mas ters then. The ridiculous aspect of the case is manifest, but while it is not at all probable that we of Clatsop will want to secede from Oregon, we feel that a continued injustice is being practiced on the community. The constitution of the United States declares that there shall be no taxation without implied adequate representation. The constitution of this state says explicitly how proper representa tion shall be secured to the several parts of the state. Both the state and federal constitutions are disre garded. In view of all this it may be asked Suppose we of Clatsop county refuse to pay our state tax es, what are you of the rest of the state going to do about it? This section is not to be out done by any in the Union, in the matter of natural and unnatural wonders, as the following from yesterday's JTeirx will shew: "J. Larkin, steward on the river steamer E. X. Cooke, says that at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morn ing he saw a monster of the deep in in the Columbia river near Tongue point, just above Astoria. Larkin describes the serpent as being 75 feet long, with a mouth big enough to comfortably hold six men, 'every one with a pack on his back.' '1 was standing on the guard at th e time,' he says, 'when I saw the , thing rise suddenly from the water ' and open its monster jaws. 1 thought the jaws of the universe had opened to swallow all human ity. Then the serpent passed un der the boat amidships. You could see its head far out from the starboard side and its tail flapping in the air lourteen feet from the surface of the water on the port side. It then disappeared entire ly. Every one on the boat was frightened almo st to death.' Lar kin could give no idea of the exact size of the mouth of the serpent, but offered to chalk it ont on the wall for the reporter, but neither had chalk. Several p msojis -ay that they have s.en big v.w; in the river near Tongue p int re cently, which they now nttribute to the serpent." It begins to look as though John A. Logan would be president of the senate after all. What a ka leidoscope the change of political events affords! New York dealers in sporting goods make money by letting guns at $2 a day each. Nantucket is being moored to the mainland by a submarine sig nal cable. The total number of physicians in the world is estimated at 190, 000. , Thky dip; potatoes by steam now, tossing out 800 barrels a day. They are going to pipe natural gas from Pittsburg to New York.
