A remarkable eflect of low tempera
ture has been pointed out to the
Glasgow Philosophical Society. At
about 122 degrees below zero Fahren
heit the flesh of animals, such as
mutton, becomes so exceedingly hard
as to ring like porcelain when struck,
and it may be readily crushed to a fine
powder. "More singular still, microbia

Season PncoETEitMiNKi). Some
time ago the discover- was made by
Mons. Ch. Montigny, by means of a
beautiful instrument " called the
scintillometer, that blue largely
predominates in the twinkling of the
stars when there is much water in
the atmosphere, and that the pre-.
pondernnce of green or ot violet is
indicative of great dryness. A late
series of tables by this Urussels savant
indicates that lie has hit upon a law
by which a wet or a dry season may
be predicted with great certainty.
Perhaps the best test of the sound
ness of his views is found in the fact
that his scintillometric forecasts of
the increasing drought in Belgium of
the vears 1SS3 and 18S4 were ful
filled" to the letter.
Once 3Iorc.
If all the characteristic stories of
Abraham Lincoln have not lecn
called in and the polls closed, we
should like to put on record just one
more incident that came to the per
sonal notice of the writer.
It was a habitof the great liberator,
when more than usually perplexed
by the cares and burdens of the gtcat
conflict, to steal away for one of
those self-communing "walks which'
were doubtless the only really undis
turbed moments of his life. : Cme
afternoon just after the terriblo "disas
ter at Cold Harbor, his abstracted
ramblo led him along the-canal that
runs parallel with the Potomac, south
of the "White House. Wandering a
couple of mile in this aimless way,
Lincoln came to a smoky little cabin,
at the door of which an old colorel
man was paring potatoes. The
"Good President" stopped and,
taking it for granted that" he would
be unknown to this humblo contra
band, sat down and engaged him in
conversation. "With that patriarchal
readiness of opinion peculiar to aged
darkies, the latter delivered manv
oraculardissertationsonpublicaflairs,
the conduct of the war, the duties
of the executive, and national affairs
generally. Tiie President listened
not witliout gaining an idea or two
from the homely discourse until it
was quite dark." As he rose to re
turn, the old man set before him a
bowl of milk and some hoe-cake,
which Lincoln who told the story
himself ate with real relish, the
first food he had enjoyed for many a
day.
" Good-bye, Uncle," he said at
last. " I'll come to sec you again."
"Done do so, Massa Lincum, done
do so," said the old man, hospitably.
" You know me, then? "asked the
President.
"Yes, indeed, honey; I knowed
yer was Ole Abe de berry minute I
sot my eyes on yer. I seed yer once
at yer noggeration, Afassa President,
and I nebber could forgit yer dis quick.
Yer's a might v sood man, ?.Fassa
Lincum, a powerful good man, but
de good Lord made yer drcfiul
homely in de face, an' dat's a fac ! "
Derrick Dodd, in San Franciscan.
