AST01UA, OREGON:
NOVEMBER 22. 1SS3
Tiirc X ir Xrf Incest expresses
fears that the Republican party is
(tying, and appears to worry about
it. Its fears are groundless.
Ntcai. Dow says the rumsellers
are running the state of Maine.
Tf this is true, one may be par
doned lor asking what the pro
hibitionists, headed by Xeal Dow
himself have been doing in Maine
for the past thirty years.
The annexation fever is raging
in the northern tier of Mexican
states. It is not the policy of the
Puked States to give encourage
ment to any proposition looking to
impairment of the territorial in
tegrity of our sister republic.
Tn is Corning, Iowa, Gazi Itf says
an insurance man was called out
in the counhy to adjust a loss on
a horse on which his company had
:i tornado insurance. The farmer.
:ul the horse died of colic, and
that if tornado insurance did not
cover all losses by wind he did not
want airy more insurance.
Tm: habit of giving children a
whole annle or a larsrc niece of
bread at one time is deprecated
by a recent writer. A better
plan, lit contends, is to give them
small siices and thus discourage
gorging and leach them the vir
tue of moderation. This is pro
babh where the president got his
notion of distributing the patron
age to I )cmoeratic office seekers.
It is untenable to claim for the
Indians any sort of control over
the disposal of lands they have
sold and ceded to the United
Stateswhen the government un
questionably can bT law transfer
the title of their patented lands
from the tribe to individuals in
severalty, or ordain that all or any
portion of the same shall be sold
to the highest biddr-r for their com
limn benefit.
the building extravagantly it
is true, but it was spent, and that
no man can rightfully repudiate
those bonds. Mr. Leiuenwober is
a public spirited man with a splen
did reputation. Let him not
sully it by continuance in error.
A naval officer remarks upon
filibustering expeditions to Cuba,
that these things never happen in
the summer, when the North At
lantic squadron cannot get down
there to stop them. When the
squadron is to start on a cruise
from the north, he says some of
the interested parties down there
subscribe two or three hundred
dollars and hire some ragged fel
lows to drill after dark. Then
word goes abroad that a formida
ble expedition is fitting out for
Cuba. Away goes the squadron,
and before it gets back the mer
chants at Key West will have re
ceived $100,000 of money spent by
the officers for stores, etc. Thfc is
all there is in it.
"Winnipeg special dispatches
from Battleford, concerning the
Northwestern Indians, are of an
alarming nature. Tt is asserted
that southern and northern tribes
are on the point of forming an al
liance to sweep the whole country,
from the far north to the boundary
line, massacreing the inhabitants
and destroying their homes. This
means much more than the late
rebellion, and it will be impossible
for the government to compare it
to a simple riot. From informa
tion obtained from runners who
have been among the various tribes,
and from observation of others, it
is predicted that trouble may come
at any moment. The government
was warned very much in the
same manner of the Saskatchewan
troubles, but neglected to take
precautionary measures until it
was too late.
