C2) Site gaily gtorum. ASTOEIA. OREGON: THURSDAY. .. .-NOVEMBER 19. 1K55 Blaine says "there is no grati tude in politics. Politics means only ambition and success." .Tas. G-. has a great head. The celebration of the opening of the through railway line of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe system to the Pacific ocean, was appropriately celebrated at San Diego. Cal., yesterday. In the little war between the Servians and the Bulgarians, the latter are getting decidedly the worst of it. They hope to drag in some of the leading European powers and make the war general. Cincinnati is said to be rapidly losing its trade on account of the political- corruption that reigns there. Some large houses have already removed to other cities, and others will do so within the next few months. A rfiNOULA.ii fate threatens the city of Mexico. The great lakes close by are yearly rising and un less drained will shortly submerge the capital. The only recourse is to tunnel a drain through the mountains at an expense ol 4, 000,000. This it is now proposed to do. Theba-w, of Burmah, is at war with the English. Of course there can be but one result: he will be conquered and his dominions, with their 5,000,000 people, annexed to British possessions in farther India. Whatever may be said of English rule, it will certainly be a benefit to the Burmese, and an improve ment upon the former state of af fairs. A letter received by a promi nent real estate dealer in Seattle, from a friend now at Port Moody, states that the whole peninsula bordering on Coal Harbor will be laid out in 25-foot town lots. The erection of government works contemplated there will be at once entered upon. Vancouver, Granville and Port Moody are swarming with people. The public committeeappointed to investigate the expulsion of Chinese from Tacoma on Novem ber 3d, submitted their report on the 17th. It demonstrates the fact that not a single Chinaman suffered bodily injury nor was any of their property destroyed. The correctness of the report :s attest ed by twenty-one of the leading citizens, representing the banking, commercial, legal and other inter ests of the city and county. The Edmunds law has already succeeded in so scaring the three presidents of the Mormon church, Taylor, Cannon and Smith, that they are hiding to prevent arrest, Some fifty bishops and apostles have been suddenly called away, thirty or fort3' tnnn lire under indictment, and nearly as many more are in prison playing ihe part of martyrs. This shows to to those in authoiity ih:J tin law means business and propose to put a stop to nolvijamy ly punish ing the most influential. The commissioners of immigra tion lor the state of New York have reported to the secretary of the treasury that duringh$year ended June 30th there arriyecl at the port of New York fronTfor eign ports 35G,90G passengers, of which number 204,013 came as steerage passengers and were land ed at Castle Garden, where they were examined by the commis sioners. The most of these were destined to Illinois, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Michi gan, Minnesota and "Wisconsin. During the year there were re turned to the country whence they came, 1,183 emigrants, of which number 51 were insane, 32 were idiots, 2 were blind, 9 wore deaf and dumb, 21 were cripples, 4:78 weie disabled by sickness, 77 by reason,of old age, and 435 were without Tisible means of support. The amount of the omigrant fund collected under the act of August 3, 18S2, was $142,210, and the ex penses of the commission amount ed to 140,031. The commission ers recommend that the act ol con gress to regulate immigration be amended so as to provide for ade quate penalties for all violations of the law. Or the Indian question Gen. Sheridan says: "I would recom mend that each family be given and located on 320 acres now pro vided for them by law. In case of actual settlement the govern ment should then condemn all the balance of each reservation at $1.25 per acre, and with the pro ceeds purchase government bonds to be held in trust by the interior department, only giving to tho Indians each year the "interest on the bonds for their support. Let this money then be distributed the same as the money appropriated each year by congress. This, then, would be more money than is appropriated by congress, and would take the question for the annual appropriations for Indians out of congress.'' Gen. Sheridan adds. "I cannot agree with Gen. Miles in hisideas regarding Indian territorj, or his confidence in the ability of the Indian to make him self self-snpporting in so short a time. All our experience hereto fore does not warrant such confi dence, and such opinions should be regarded as individual rather than representative of the army. The permanent control of the Indians is not desired by the army at large. NEW TO-DAY. Meeting Notice.
