OH, DO COME BACK.
BUI Xye's M OHt Earnest Appeal to
The Family Cook.
I wish you would insert the follow
ing personal in your valuable and
widely-read paper:
Personal Will the young woman
who used to cook in our family, and
who went awa- ten pounds of sugar
and five and a half pounds of tea
ahead of the game, please come back,
and all will be forgiven.
If she cannot return will she please
write, stating her present address,
and also give her reasons for shutting
up the uit in the refrigerator when
she went away ?
If she will only return, we will try
to forget the past anil think only of
the glorious present and the bright,
bright future.
Come back, Sarah, mid jerk the
waffle-iron for us once more.
Your manners are peculiar, but we
yearn for your doughnuts, and your
style of streaked cake suits us exactly.
You may keep the handkerchiefs
and the collars, and we will not refer
to the dead past.
We have arranged it so that when
yon snore it will not disturb the
night police, and if you do not like
our children we will end them away.
We realize thai you do not like
children very well, and oir children
especially gave you much pain be
cause they were not so refined as you
were.
We have often wished, for your
sake, that we una never nau any
children; hut so long as thev are in
our family, the neighbors will rather
expect us to take care of them.
Still, if you insist upon it, we will
send them" away. We don't want to
seem overbearing with our servants.
We would be willing also to give
you more time for mental relaxation
than you had before. The intellect
ual strain incident to the life of one
who makes gravy for a lost and un
done world must be very great, and
tired nature must at last succumb.
We don't want you to succumb. If
anv one has got to succumb, let us do
it."
All we ask is that you will let us
know when you are going away, and
leave the crackers and cheese where
we can find them.
It was rather rough on us to have
you go away when we had guests in
the house, but if you had not taken
the ke' to the cooking department
we could have worried along.
You ought to let us have company
at the house sometimes if we let you
havo company when you want to.
Still, you know best, perhaps. You
are older than we are, and you have
seen more of the world.
We miss your gentle admonitions
and your stern reproofs sadly. Come
back and admonish us once more, at
so much per admonish and groceries.
"We will agree to let you select the
tender part of the steak, and such
fruit as seems to strike you favorably,
just as we did before. We did not
like it when you were here, but that
is because we were young and did
not know what the custom was.
If a lifetime devoted to your welfare
can obliterate the injustice we have
done you, we will be glad to yield it
to voii.
If you could suggest a good place
for us to send the children, where
they would be. well taken care of, and
where they would not interfere with
some other cook who is a friend of
yours, we would be glad to have you
write us.
My wife says that she hopes you
willfeel perfectly free to use the piano
whenever you are lonely or sad, and
when you or the bread feel depressed
you will be welcome to come into the
parlor and lean up against either one
of us and sob.
"We know that when you were with
us before we were a little reserved in
our manner toward you, but if you
will come back it will be different.
We will introduce you to more of
our friends this time, and we hope
you will do the same by us. Young
people are apt to get above their busi
ness, and we admit that we were
wrong.
Come back and oversee our fritter
bureau once more.
Take the portfolio of our interior
department.
Try to forget our former coldness.
Return, O wanderer, return !
Artistic Weeping;.
Few women look pretty or even in
teresting in tears, though it has long
been a pleasant fiction in poetry and
romance to suppose that thev do.
Manv women, some men, most chil
dren, make most disfiguring and dis
torting grimaces while crying, and
the lady who thinks she can work
upon a man's feelings by a liberal
display of tears, should carefully
study a becoming mode of producing
them before her looking-glass.
A negro boy, while walking along
the street, took off his hat and struck
at a wasp that had alighted on a tall
shrub hanging over a fence. The
hoy put on his hat, turned to a man,
anil said: "I thought I got dat ar ole
wass." "Didn'tyougethim?" "Xc,
sah ; but I " he snatched oJ his
hat, clapped his hand on the top of
his head, squatted, howled, and said :
"Blame fi didn't git dat ole wass."

Odd Triclcs.
If you want to see curious sleight-of-hand
performances, you must go
to India. No jugglers in the world
can compare with those who practice
their curious art in that far-away
land.
They have neither curtains nor
tables, boxes nor drawers, nor do
they wear loese embroidered mantles
with large sleeves, as Wester, wiz
ards usually do. An Indian juggler
is clothed only with a strip of muslin
fastened around his body. His limbs
are bare. He stands in an open
courtyard without a tree, a grass-plot
or the shelter of a tent; and in the
midst of a ring "of spectators, all gaz
ing at him with intense watchfulness,
he calmly performs tricks which look
like miracles.
For instance, he extends to you his
empty hands. You see there is
nothing in them. He stoops down,
picks up two or three pebbles, rubs
his hands together, and presently
there is a shining silver rupee.
Again he shows you his bare
hands, picks up the rupee, breaks it
in two, or pretends to do so, and
there are two coins. He breaks
these again and again until he has
ten or a dozen, and where the money
has come from or where he had it
hidden, no mortal can tell.
The basket trick is a favorite and
a very mysterious one. The basket
is shown you empty. It is turned
upside down in vour sight. You
know perfectly that there is nothing
beneath it; biit the juggler sings a
little song. "Mieow! mieow!" is
heard; he lifts the basket and out
jumps a cat. Sometimes, instead of
"mieows," one hears the barking of a
dog or the cooing of a dove, and one
of these emerges instead of Madam
Puss. More amazing still it is to see
puss there by herself at one moment,
and the next, on the lifting of the
basket, to behold her the center of a
happy family, kittens crowding by
her side and a bird perched on her
head. Sometimes a child is placed
under tho basket and the juggler
dances wildly around it, thrusting
long lances and knives into the bam
boo until blood comes out and the
spectators are horror-stricken.
But just as tney are reidy to inter
fere, a merry laugh will be heard on
the edge of the circle, and there will
be the little one quite unhurt, and
how he escaped from the basket, or
where the red fluid which looked like
blood came from, is not explained.
A French traveler saw a juggler set
a large top spinning on the end of a
slick, which he balanced on his fore
head. The top then stopped revolv
ing or went on at the word of com
mand, just as if it had beeri alive.
Some of the jugglers dance airily on
a loosely-fastened rope, their feet
bare and earthen jars on their heads.
One of them was seen to walk along
the rope without a misstep, although
buffalo horns were tied to his feet.
I think you will agree with the
general opinion that if you want to see
really clever tricks you must go to
India. Harper's Young Folks.
Happy nrnmcntH In the Id To of an
Editor.
There are moments in the life of
even the wretched country editor
when his tired nerves are thrilled by
the touch of joy. There arc little
intervals when the odor of ink and
benzine vanish like the dewy jewel
that sparkles on the rose when kissed
by the morning sun, and the polluted
air seems laden with richest per
fumes. Such a moment came to us
yeEterday evening, when three of
uroekvillc's best citizens, Messrs. S.
R. Anderson, S. A. Hunter, and
Moses Johns, burst in upon us all at
once, like a ray of light, and sub

Quakerism Xot Dying Ont.
A prominent and worthy follower
of George Fox in Maine says: "The
expression sometimes used that the
Friends are dying out, has no foun
dation whatever. The real truth in
reference to this is that throughout
the United States they have a larger
increase of membership in proportion
to their number than any other evan
gelical church. The society is in
creasing in Maine at the present
time. One new meeting has been
set up the past year."

LIVER REGULATOR!
For all Diseases of the i
Liver, Sidneys, Stomach and Spleen.
This purely vegetable pre

Family Medicine, originated in
the South in 1828. It acts

action of the Liver, and is, there

medicine, whatever the sick
ness may prove to be. In all
common diseases it will, un
assisted by any other medi
cine, effect a speedy cure.
The Regulator is safe to administer in any
condition of the system. and under no circum

like a class of wine, but i r.o intoxicating bever
