W ?!tc 2ta gjtstarau. ASTORIA, OREGON: TUESDAY. -NOVEMDEH 17. 18SO The police force has been tempora rily reduced I673 per cent. Reserved seats for to-night's per formance at the New York Novelty store. Nearly one thousand tons of tea are on the Artisan daily expected at Tacoma from Hong Kong. Public interest is divided between the Oregonian-liIilckeM matter and the coming municipal election in this city. Balloting for TJS. senator begins at Salem to-day. The Astoriak will try to keep its readers fully posted as to the progress of the contest. That man is not worth a curse that won't stand up for a friend when that friend is attacked. Now is the time for Mitchell's friends to stand by him. The God. Newel I is having her bow covered with iron and her sides heav ily planked. She will take the place of the Lurline on the Vancouver route next month. A Newton pippin weighing just one pound plucked if rom a tree in the orchard of S. B. Smith is the latest evidence of Clatsop county's pom ological prominence. Children can procure reserved seats for twenty-five cents to the entertain ment to be given by Ciishing Post Cornet band at Boss opera honse this Tuesday evening. Chinose Consul Bee, of San Fran cisco, states that four ships at Victo ria have baen chartered to return five or six thousand Canadian Pacific laborers to China. The agitation has scared them off. 'Tissaidin Salem that the sena torial position lies between Mitchell and Moody. The Welcome says that there is money in Salem and also some legislators with empty pocket books and no conscience. Cushing Post cornet baud will have an entertainment at Boss opera house this Tuesday evening: fine music, vocal and instrumental: danc ing afterwards. Tickets seventy-five cents: at New York Novelty store. Owing to the Cushing Post band concert this evening the meeting of the Astoria musical society will be postponed till next Thursday, when Prof. Bettinger will be pleased to meet any new members who wish to join the class. CapL Chas. F. Powell is in receipt of a handsomely engraved gold headed cane, a present from Messrs. Eastwick, Stoneman and others at the government works. The cane is made from a piece of wood from the wreck of the Cairnsmore. Owing to the dangerous condition of Yaquina bay bar and entrance it is reported that Captain Koenig, a pioneer pilot on the northern coast, has been engaged to take charge of the tug which goes ahead of the iron steamer Yaquina when she enters or leaves there. "Eggs are now being shipped to Portland from Iowa.'' Ex. Yes, and some of them are shipped from Port land to Astoria. Judging from their venerable appearance and odor when shucked it would seem as though they'd been shipped from New Jer sey to Iowa before being started out this way. Tho British ship City of Florence, and the British bark Highmoor sailed yesterday. The British barks Cross Hill and Primera cleared for Queenstown yesterday. The former carries 54,915 bus. wheat, valued at 344.482 and the latter with 32,125 bus. valued at 20,000. The Walla Walla sailed: the Cross Hill leaves out to-day. Granted for the sake of argument that all that Saturday's Oregonian charges are true; what does the whole business amount to? Simply this that fifteen years ago Mitchell fell in love with his wife's sister and told her about it Till the Oregonian made the charges none of the parties interested appear to have been in any way damaged thereby. Can one man dictate to the entire state? The entire state demands that John H. Mitchell shall be elected senator. The hundred journals tossed on this desk voice public opin ion from every nook and cor ner of the commonwealth. They all say "Give us Mitchell" Nothing but cowardice will keep the Kepublican majority at Salem from giving the people their choice. In another column appears the programme of tho entertainment to be given by CushingPost cornet band, assisted by some well known musical talent of Astoria, at the Boss opera house this Tuesday evening. The merit of the selections, the manifest ability of all participating and the entire character of the performance will doubtless insure a crowded house. Beserved seats at the New York Nov elty store. There is very little activity at the locks, says the Dalles Times-Mountaineer. Last congress having made no appropriation for tho work, op erations are almost at a stand still About thirty men are now employed, and these -will be at work until Feb ruary, when, if no appropriation is made, they will take a rest It is ex pected that congress will make liberal appropriations as soon as it convenes, and then work will be pushed rapidly Girl "Wanted. The Portland Neics issued an extra edition last Sunday in which John H. Mitchell published a denial of the charges brought against him in Sat urday's Oregonian. He says: "Ideny most positively, specifically and un qualifiedly, that I ever wrote any one, or part, or portion, of any one of the alleged letters, or notes published in this morning's Oregonian and attributed tome." "The tracks of crime in their make up are so flagrantly apparent as to stamp the whole business as stupid and idiotic in theextreme: as, for instance, I am in one letter, of date September 7th, 1870. made to say, I was examined and admitted to the bar to-day and am now a lawyer,' and further, 'I don't know exactly what I will do or where I may go to commence practice. I may remain in Oregon City and I may go to Portland, I cannot tell as yet"' While the fact is, as the rec ords show, and as thousands of men in Pennsylvania and Oregon know, I was admitted to the bar first in tho state of Pennsylvania, in tho year 1850, and I was admitted to the b3r in the state of Oregon in September, 1SG0, after an examination by a com mittee of the bar, of which Hon. E. D. Shattuck, of this city, was the chairman; and had been, on Septem ber 7th, 1870, the date of this alleged letter, engaged in active practice of law in Portland, Oregon City, and other places, for over ten years. If, on the other hand, it should be claimed that the letter is misdated, and that should have been Septem ber?, 1800, the date when I was admitted to the bar here, then, as many know, the party to whom it is alleged it was addressed, could not have been over six years of age." He goes on at length to recite mat ters which some have known and oth ers surmised concerning, the record of his principal assailant. Yesterday's Oregonian comes out with u double leaded article on sev eral pages of an eight paged edition and rings the changes on all it said the day before. Its chief aim in yes terday's issue appears to be to try and goad and taunt Mitchell into some overt act of violence. . In his action since Saturday the editor of the Oregonian has stepped outside tho line of personal protection and invited reprisal of a nature that would not require a repetition. When an unscrupulous man in a newspaper office uses his power to blast the reputation of a fellow being no paltry attempt at a "libel suit" is sufficient condonement for the irre trievable wrong. But the miserable consciousness ot his own identity through time and eternity is probab ly the fittest cs it is the surest pun ishment that can be meted out to a man who to gratify personal malice would prostitute his profession us the editor ot the Oregonian ha3 done. The Astoriax says --the Nehalem settlers are moving in tho matter of a petition to the legislature praying that the present boundary lines between Clatsop and Columbia counties be moved east three, miles." The only "settler" who Is moving to any extent in tho matter is a party by the name of Cameron, and he assigns as a reason that the taxes are too high in Columbia county, although as he is not a tax payer, this cannot affect him. As for any oth er -'good reasons" that exist for such a change, we are ignorant of them, and wc hardly think the legislature will re verse its own action so speedily. We know that the principal tax payers of that section aro opposed to such a change, and they have good reason for being so. Our people prefer Tortland to Astoria as a trading point, and it is often a great convenience to them to be able to visit the county seat on their way to the metropolis. Moreover, there is no way for the settlers in that section to get to Astoria except by boat. There is not even a trail from the Westport settlement to Astoria, and the Nehalem people have to go quite a distance down the Nehalem and then only have a verv poor trail over the mountains to Asto ria, while they have good roads to St. Helens. In view of these facts, friend Halloran, don't you think it would be as well to leave the line where the legis lature has established it? St. Helens Mist, i:t. Prior to the legislature of '85, the east boundary line of Clatsop county crossed West's slough just at Wood's landing, in sec. 8, T. 7, two miles due east of Westport, though for nil prac tical purposes the county line was supposably at Westport as all east of that was assessed in Columbia coun ty. What is now asked is to put it one mile farther east than it was be fore moved by the last legislature. This is for the convenience of set tlors who live on a tract beginning about three miles south of Wood's landing- and extending down the Nehalem through T. G. There is a road from Wood's landing, which 13 the natural entrepot for that country. As it is thirty miles to Astoria and eighty to Portland, as Astoria is a good market and Astoria merohants offer equal inducements with Port land merchants, it is clear that the interests of the twenty or thirty settlers in that region and the con venience of all in that vicinity re quires that tho county boundary lines be changed. The Astorian doesn't want the county boundary line3 extended for any other reason than tho natural de sire to afford every one all the pos sible facilities to settle and occupy the country. If this can be best dono by placing it in Columbia county let it be dono. If, as wo believe, it will be better in every way for people there to be set into this county, that should be done. Carue Ashore. Coroner Ross received a telegram last Sunday evening, that a body had come ashore ou Clatsop beach. He went down that evening and held an inquest yesterday. The body came ashore near the Seaside house. It was that of a man 38 or 40 years of age; five feet nine inches in height, dark complexion; had on red flannel underwear, gray flannel overshirt and overalls. Tho verdict was that he was drowned in the ocean. It is be lieved that ho was off the plunger Emma, two others, manifestly from that unfortunate craft, coming ashore last week. The pockets of the do ceased were turned inside out and completely rifled, the ghoulish cu pidity of those first discovering the body destroying any probability of tho nnfortunate man's identification. The burial will bo to-day. lro-er Treatment tor Coughs. This is tho title of a twenty-nine page pamphlet bv John Campbell, of East Portland. It shows how 20,000 square miles of land in Oregon and Washington are still held by railroad corporations, and argues that in this lies the reason for sparse settlement, high taxes and the non development of the country. People who are still whining about the forfeiture of the Astoria land grant would do well to get the pamphlet. We do not agree with all of its arguments nor conclu sions, but there is truth enough in the publication to merit attention. Syrup orfigs. Manufactured only by the California Fig Sjmip Co.
