ASTORIA, OREGON:
TUESDAY -NOVEMBER 17, 1SS5
ASTORIA.
In the current number of the
Pacific Christian Adcovatc, in an
editorial on Astoria, occurs the
follewing:
In situation Astoria has beauties
and advantages that are not rivaled
by anr other Oregon city. It is
no small thing for a city to stand
just where the mightiest river of
the western slope of the continent
meets the tide of the mightiest
ocean of the globe. It is not
strange that the people of a city
thus located should feel a great
faith in its future. It cannot be
thought a marvel, as they look up
on the increasing fleets of com
merce, bearing the flags of all
nations, and freighted with the
wealth of all climes sailing into
their port, that they should feel
that the time will come when they
will cast their anchors and furl
their sails in their splendid bay,
and unload their wealth on the
great wharves that will margin it
round. And there is more than a
possibility that their splendid faith
will one day become a reality. No
one can stand upon these overlook
ing heights and mark the wide
spread of bay and the deep sweep
of liver before the city, and look
down to where river meets sea
without feeling thcat there is cer
tainly a future greatness before
the city that lies at his feet. Of
course it can come only as com
merce comes, for its hopes are
those that arc born of the seas and
the countries be3Tond, and that
must wait the growtli of empire
on the great western slope of the
continent, but it will come as they
come, and their growth will be its
fulfillment.
A PACIFIC CONFEDERATION.
Ax important diplomatic move
to secure the neutrality of islands
of the Pacific, so far as they are
not now possessed by the conti
nental powers, is on foot, which
contemplates a disregard of
Spain's claims of sovereignty over
any islands upon which she has
not established and maintained her
colonies. Regarding this as an
opportune time, in view of the an-!
prehensions caused last summer.'
by the Carolines affair, the Hawai
ian authorities have lately directed
the Hawaiian minister to this
country to propose a plan to the
United States, England, France,
Holland, Germany and Spain for
the settlement of this question.
It is that the Sandwich Islands,
which possess great influence in
other islands, be allowed to send a
commission to unite them to local
representative governments, whose
integrity shall be guaranteed by
the powers. The contracting
powers would then send consuls
to the islands to protect their re
spective interests. In this way
the islands will bo k;t forever
open to coinmcicc ami neutral in
-any wars that may hereafter aiise.
The scheme, as outlined, has been
the subject of several consultations
between Minister Carter and .Sec
retary Bayard. The latt.-i hearti
ly endorses it. Armed v.jth this
indorsement Minister l 'a iter sailed
for Europe on the 10th, on a mis
sion to the nations mentioned.
He has laid the matter before the
ministers at "Washington and coun
tries named, and in every case
their answers have been favorable.
A careful estimate of the pop
ulation of southern Alaska places
the number of whites at 3,000
and natives at 7,000. The native
Alaskans are said to be educated
to some extent in the elementary
branches, and to be members of
the Greek. Presbyterian and Cath
olic churches. They are not In
dians, and differ in appearance,
habits, language and other re
spects from Indians of the United
States.
Thanksgiving is coming and
Serria'and Greece are crying loud
ly for a piece of Turkey.
A MAGNIFICENT GIFT.
Ex-governor, now senator,
Stanford of, California has prepared
the grandest monument that ever
perpetuated man's memory in
founding and endowing the Leland
Stanford, Jr. university at Palo
Alto, California. The gift is
equivalent to $10,000,000.
The nature, object and pur
poses of the institution to be
founded are mentioned as follews:
"Its nature is that of a university,
with such seminaries of learning
as shall make it of the highest
grade, including a mechanical in
stitute, museum, galleries of art,
laboratories and conservatories,
together with all things necessary
for the study of agriculture, in all
its branches, and for mechanical
training and study, and exercises
directed to cultivation and enlarge
ment of the mind. Its object is to
qualify its students for personal
success and direct usefulness in
life; and its purpose is to promote
the public welfare by exercising
an influence in behalf of humanity
and civilization, teaching the bless
ings of liberty, regulated by law,
and inculcating love and reverence
for the great principles of govern
ment, as derived from the inalien
able rights of man to life, liberty
and the pursuit of happiness."
If rightly conducted and proper
ly managed, the university will be
what its founder and projector
hopes, and will perpetuate his
memory when costly mausoleums
and lofty marbles shall have crum
bled into dust.
Astoi:l, Clatsop county and
western Oregon ask that John H.
Mitchell be elected United States
senator. AVe want no Northern
Pacific attorney sent from Oregon
to the American House of Lords.
"We want a man able and willing
to work for the best material in
terests of the commonwealth.
That man is John H. Mitchell, and
if this section had a vote on the
matter he would get ninety-nine
out of every hundred votes for the
place. There is no "vindication,"
or "endorsement," or anything of
the kind about this thing. The
people want him to represent them
at "Washington and he should be
elected.
Ax edict of the Spanish govern
ment which went into force last
year, frees one slave in lour every
year. This will extinguish slavery
in the island of Cuba in 1S88. A
large planter from Cuba, being in
terviewed, said: "Slave labor is
not profitable in Cuba. I have
owned and worked GOO on my
plantation, but now do not own a
slave and hire all my laborers, and
find it better and cheaper." The
value of slaves has so decreased
under the order of emancipation
that thousands of them purchase
their own lib&rty and hire them
selves out to raise money.

A southern paper says:
"When whales grew scarce, petro
leum was discovered in Pennsyl
vania, enormously enriching that
mighty and opulent common
wealth. "When Alabama mines
promised to undersell eastern iron,
natural gas was discovered in
Pennsylvania, and displaces coal.
God is good to Pennsylvania."
Yet Pennsylvania howls louder for
-'protection" than all the other
states of the Union put together.
... - M g . --
It has been estimated that the
value of the natural gas used in
the United States in 1884 was
11,460,000, as against 475,000 in
18S3. In each instance the value
of the coal superceded by this
kind of gas is taken as a basis of
the calculation.
