"Thinks 1 that's a little funny, and so 1 made inquiry ot an old chap whom 1 had met oil a former trip and knew to be a deacon in the church and a shining light in his community. "'Well,' he says, in response to my inquiry, but a little confused like, 'we thought it would be a good idea to have some in our meetin' house in case of fire.' "Just then I stepped around to the back end of the store to see a new threshing machine, and, would, you believe it, there between two big corn cribs was a countryman with one of those fire extinguishers up to his mouth and drinking out of it ! The Smithsonian Institute has re ceived from ILtrton County,. Ua., a natural curiosity that is 'arousing much interest. A company which is getting out limestone from a solid ledge found, 100 feet below the sur face of the ledge, an immense deiosit ot human and animal bones carelessly heaped together and imbedded in the solid rock. The bones are intact, hut break when the effort is made to free them from the stone. A mass of this conglomerate of stone and bones weighing r,000 pounds has been re ceived here, and the Smithsonian authorities will send an expert down to examine the deposit, which is represented to weigh many tons. No explanation is offered for the bones being there, save tliat a cavo existed there inhabited by antediluvians and tt afterwards slowly lillou with a limestone deposit which cannot now be distinguished from the original rock.
