1LAXIMS ON MANNERS.
Hints for Those Who Cultivate tlie
Social Graces.
Never send a visitins card by mail.
A wound to a man's vanity leaves j
a permanent scar.
Cross your t's in writing, but do
not cross your letters.
In tho best appointed households a
wise economy prevails.
Walk as if vou were conscious that
3our body has a soul in it.
Speech of one's self oucht to bo
seldom, and well chosen.
Perfect machinorv works noise
lessly ; so docs a perfect hostess.
It is good to travel. "Home-keen
ing j'outh have ever homely wits."
"Shun the wretch who noes about
asking riddles and makinir nuns."
Never foriret that vour rheumatism
is a matter of national concern.
At home, as abroad, what wo should
specially cultivate is manners.
Elaborate monojrrams and coreeous
crests on stationery are vulgar.
A 'entleman will never admit that
he has maladies in conversation.
Observe in makinjr an introduction
always to present the gentleman to
tne ladv.
A polished man puts his neiehbor
at eaae, and by so doing confirms his
sc it-respect.
Half the failure in Hfo aro cansod
by'spurrinsono'ihorM.toioapbeyoild
ins strengtn.
A married hulV should treat a
stranger with re.servo, an acquaint
anco with reticeiu .
A rudely arrogant sneocli oficL.
rankles in the mind lone after an un
just action has been forgotten.
"A high-bred lady," says Thack
eray, "is the most complete of all
Heaven's subjects in this world."
When 3'ou meet a ladv in the street
you must not walk with hcr unless
she (directly or indiiectly) invites
you.
In making calls never stav so long
as to create in the mind of your hostess
an intense desire that you would go.
There is nothing so contemptible as
that which animates the poor creat
ures who struggle to keep up appear
ances.
Truth is the best policy. Ever'
person feels flattered by the reflec
tion that you think him too clever to
be cajoled.
In these words is comprehended
the whole code of ceurtesy: Put
everybody on the same level as your
self and put yourself into everybody's
place.
Good-humored gossip is the salt of
ordinary conversation, but no well
bred porson will indulgo in the gossip
that peers into the privacy of domestic
life and cither invents or misrepre
sents. You may icarn tho grammar of a
language and yet know nothing of its
genius ; so you may be precise in your
knowledge of the rules of etiquette,
and utterly ignorant of the true spirit
of hospitality.
Louis XII. said that he had rather
see his courtiers laugh at his avarice
than his people weep at his extrava
gance; so a wise housekeeper will be
willing that his friends shall respect
his prudence rather than smilo cov
ertly at his ostentation.
"Wonderful power of manners!
We may ascribe to them as great a
potency as beauty possesses. No
doubt they go far to supply tho want
of beauty and constitute the secret of
that fascination which we so often see
exerted by persons who cannot claim
to be beautiful."
While guest3 are with you do 'our
best to make them feel that they are
thoroughly welcome, and give up to
them all your thoughts and attention.
Bo this not so much out of respect to
them as to 3-011 rself. No one benefits
more b' an act of courtes' than the
person "who jerforms it.
It was said of Lath' Maynard : "To
her husband she was the immediate
gift of God, sent for a good angel as
well as for a wife. As a mother she
evinced an unspeakable tenderness
and loving thoughtfulness toward b&i
children. Tho servants rapectA' tya
and her friends loved her."
A 3l8ffuanlmou SohTb
The following was related by a lady
In this city, who vouches for its au
thentic' : A lad living near Lock
Eort whose domestic experience had
een anything but one long dream of
uninterrupted bliss, was sorel3 af
flicted with a cancer. It was decided
hy her ph3'sician to perform an oper
ation of so critical a nature that there
was but one chance in five of ultimate
recoveiy. Accordingly the patient
naturally desired to make due prepa
ration for a probable fatalit3'. Send
ing for her husband, with whom she
had not lived for a 3'ear, she said:
"James, ou and I have not been
happy together. I have no crimina
tions to make, no malice to gratify,
no coals of fire to heap upon j-our
head. All I want, as 1 stand on the
verge of the grave, is the assurance
of 3'our fullest pardon for the wrongs
I have done you." " Well, Mary,"
was the comforting response, "all I
have to say is that if you die I'll for
give you, but if 'ou recover the
old grudge still stands." Buffalo
Courier.
Sclentlflo Ulscellany.
Mr. Sereno Watson classifies the
North American ro3es into eighteen
species.
A recent earthquake in France af
fected only the chalk formations at
the earth's surface, and was neither
heard nor felt by men at work in the
coal mines beneath.
A microscope having a bent body
tube is a recent scientific instrument.
It Is intended to combine the advan
tages of keeping the stage horizontal
and enabling the observer to keep his
body in a convenient position.
For the observation of all kinds of
subterranean phenomena, J. J. Mar
tinez suggests the boring into the
earth of a hole 30 by 150 feet in di
ameter, the expense of the undertak
ing to be met by a universal subscrip
tion. Tho value of vaccination is illus
trated by the registers of an old hos
pital in "Prague, where the mortality
from small-pox from 1670 to 1S15
that is, in the prevaccination period
was 27 percent, while from 1815 to
1S55, it has been only 4.53 per cent.
According to Mr. W. H. Harris, un
wholesome food, defective ventilation,
and the diffusion of poisonous germs
produce among bees about the same
result as among tho human family.
A common and very fatal disease of
the bees is dysenter', due to imper
fect ventilation and poor winter food.
In countries having marked winter
seasons, earthquakes are found to be
more frequent in winter than in sum
mer. Dr. Knott, of the Seismological
Societ' of Japan, finds only two pos
sible meteorological reasons for this
one being the stress of accumulated
snow, and the other that of high
barometric pressure during the cold
season.
TheNew Element. The newmetal
galliurA melts at 81.1 degrees Fahren
heit, becoming liquid when held in
the hand. Its specific gravity is a
little less than G, or about half that
of lead. It tarnishes but slightly in
the air. It adheres readily to glass
when fused, forming a beautiful mir
ror. In chemical characteristics the
rare element gallium most resembles
the abundant element aluminum.
Delicacy of the Senses. Dr. E.
L. Nichols has made investigations
which indicate the incorrectness of
the general belief that in woman the
special senses are more finely organ
ized and delicate than in man. He
found the eyes of men to be more
sensitive than those of women to red,
yellow, and greon colors, although
hot so to blue ; and the perception oi
smell proved to be more acute in
men than in women.
A Phexosienon is Quartz. Some
silicious pebbles which are quite nu
merous in tho quarternary gravels oi
the Loing Valley, France, have been
described by Meunier. These stones
about an inch and a half in diam
eter aro remarkable for being hol
low and inclosing liquid water, to
gether frequently with a" loose ston
nucleus. Meunier supposes that the
water must have penetrated tho peb
bles through their minute pores, foi
not a sign of a crack can be seen oven
b' the aid of a strong glass.
CnEMicAL Actios op Light. Prof.
A. Vogel observes that the hemlock
plant which yields coniine in Bavaria
contains none in Scotland, and he
concludes that sunlight pla-s a part
in the generation of alkaloids in
plants. This view is confirmed by
the circumstance that the tropical
Cinchonas, if cultivated in feebly
lighted northern hot-houses, yield no
quinine. Tne formation of tannin
seems to be influenced b' exposure
of the growing bark to the light, the
proportion of tannin in the bark o!

"Say, Jimmie, you want to let up

telegraph boy to another.
"What for? It's a good paper."
"No, it ain't. Don't you see that
it's the Telegraph Operator's Journal?"
"Weil, what of it?"
"Why, it's flash literature."
