To be properly enjoyed the perfect watermelon should be" pounced on in the patch just after sun up. It should be carefully selected. In response to an eager thump there should follow a dead and meaty sound and the melon should weigh not less than twenty-five pounds. After it is pulled it should be split from end to end with a short-bladed pocket-knife, so that in tearing it open the glowing and juicy heart, bursting loose from its confinement, shall find a lodgment on one side only. At this point the knife is to be flung away. For a mo ment the eye should 'be allowed to feast itself bn the vision thus mid denly brought to view, then thf heart should be scooped out with the hand and its nectarious meat thrust upon the hot and thirsty palate. There ought to be something savage in the enjoyment of a watermelon; it ought to be crushed and swallowed with avidity. The man who knows how to enjoy one wili come away from the fray with the sweets in his beard, in his hair, and on his clothes. At lanta Constitution. Hobbies ! The hobby affection is often a symptom of "some mental trouble mild or severe, as the case may be but it is not a disease in itself. There arc cases, however, in which an excessive manifestation of the hobby influence constituted the most marked symptom of a real nervous trouble. Some of these cases are very inter esting and attract attention even in those mild and often amusing assets of eccentricity which do not call for professional 'treatment. We must remember that hobbies are favorite pursuits carried to excess, and do not necessarily indicate mental disorder. But even in cases where they really arise from disturbed mental condi tions they are known to be beneficial in their "effects. Some neuraloeists have asserted that a mild monomania may afford an excellent outlet for that excess of psychic force which might, in some temperaments, give rise to serious nervous troubles.
