Sirs. Salm, the wealthy Texas Cattle Queen," has been stopping in Chicago, and she makes even the supercilious hotel clerk regard her with interest, as the following little incident recorded by the Neic shows : "I want some fast horses," said the little woman, addressing the clerk of the Palmer House. "And I want six of them," continued she, while the clerk gazed at her in the same manner that visitors at dime museums are wont to look upon the human curiosities. "I want two white, two gray, and two black. I want them to drive and will take them for a week, and don't care what they cost. Ahnd now ones, uan you get tnem ior me c - The clerk replied to the effect that S i would send the agent of a livery he stable to take her order in person, whereupon the figure in white dis appeared in the elevator and was soon visible on the parlor floor. "She won't get any chance to shoot me," said the clerk, as he moved from the counter towards the office of a livery firm. "She's Mrs. N. Salm, the" cattle queen of Texas. They say that she went to a Houston hotel and ordered some fast horses, and, when two mustang ponies were sent around, she went to the clerk with a pistol in her hand. She took it as an insult on her driving, and wanted somebody's gore. I remem bered that little story; so I shifted all responsibility. The livervman can -,tand it." As a result of the conferences be tween the clerk and the liven' agent, and the latter and the littlc'lady in white, the cattle queen drove a team of four flyers through Lincoln Fark and along the lake shore drive in the afternoon. A little miss of three years, who lives under the shadows of Hope Church, was playing with the neigh bors' children one morning, when the latter were called in for prayers. She accompanied them, and when seated in the sitting-room, she observed that she was the only one without a book. So she jumped down and helped herself from the book-case in the room, returned to her chair and opened her book like the others and endeavored to read unrequestcd. After reading she sliut her book and waited till they had all kneeled; then she assumed a like position, putting her hand to her face, but keeping a lookout between her fing ers all the while to observe what was taking place. "When the others rose from their knees she ran over to one of the little girls, and calling her bv name, said: "I like this game first-rate. "What is the name of it?" Springfield (Mass.) Homestead.
