The Chillano3 are the Irishmen of South America quick, keen, -witty, impulsive, and reckless. Many of the leading families of Chili are de scendants of Irish ancestry. Barney O'Hipgins was the Liberator and the first Dictator of Chili, the Washing ton of his country , and Patrick Lynch was the commanding General in the late war with Peru. Patricio Mc Garry is a prominent merchant in Santiago, and Miguel (Michael) The O's and Macs are fre quently seen in newspaper articles, and when combined with Spanish surnames look very funny. They will fight at the drop of a hat, vith anybody, for any cause, and against any odds, and are always anxious for somebody to step on the tails of their coats. They make splendid soldiers, are fond of" pomp and parade, and have no sense of fear, as the late war with Peru demonstrated, in which a regiment of Chilians was always good for double or treble its number of tlie enem)'. They love a nanu-to-hand fight, it being their habit in war to capture everything by charges, dropping their muskets aud using their "ruachctas," or curved knives, which are always carried in war or peace. The Chillano does not fight with his fist, or a club, or a revolver, but always with this knife, and he generally kills by throat-cutting, as the Italian stabs with a stiletto. Their wit is proverbial. Chili is the only country in South America where comic papers are published, and these contain cartoons and witti cisms that would do credit to any country. During the struggle be tween" the church and the liberal party, the priests and monks were objects of much ridicule, and the printshop.s arc full of pictures repre senting the devotees of the church and the fathers in all sorts of comi cal predicaments. Correspondence Philadelphia Press. MarcLInc Throngh Cteorsia. Gen. "VV. T. Sherman strolled about the corridor of the Grand Pacific the other night awaiting the departure of the 'bus for the depot. An enthusi astic admirer accosted him. "I am sorry tho old soldiers didn't know you were in Chicago, we should have serenaded you." "I am glad they didn't know it then," replied the General. "I am tired of serenades." "You are not tired of the old song, 'Marching Through Georgia,' are ycu, General?" queried the admirer. "No," answered the hero of the refrain, as he straightened himself up, "I never get tired of that old song. "When I was in Ireland a few years ago I was surprised to hear the air sung with different words. I asked about it, and found that tlie tune was that of an old Irish song, and was borrowed to tit the refrain, 'Marching Through Georgia.' " Chicago News. Origin of Texan Cattle. That the cattle of Mexico and Texas descended from, the herds of old Spain is almost universally be lieved. It is thought that "when those jfcntle and pious worthies, the Spanish invaders, brought their swords to America to help make openings for the introduction of sav ing grace and the sweet charitable teachings of the church militant, they also brought cattle of the herds of Andalusia. Some of them, it is supposed, escaped, or were aban doned to roam and breed at freedom, on the sunny plains of the Rio Broyo del Norte. The resemblance there is between the picturesquely gothic Andalusian bullock and the slabsided and cat-hamed racer of the South west, is considered good evidence, if not proof positive, that they had a remote common origin. Chicago Tribune. A young lady, vvhile visiting the mission church at San Gabriel, some time ago, was shown paintings of eleven of the apostles, and, be coming deeply absorbed, asked the priest present: "Where is the othar one ?" The good padre stood aghast. Ingleside. Cure For Piles.
