OREGOX: SATURDAY -NOVEMBER 7. 18S5 IMIECTLY INTERESTED. men that the whole concern is on the verge of probable bankruptcy, and when the collapse does come it will be the most terrible of the nineteenth century." Kepresentatiyes of the Knights of Labor allege that the public press, in assigning reasons for the Democratic victory in New York, has quite over looked the importance of that or ganization as a factor in the re sults. One of its officers, who is also in the government service, and who spent some days in New York and Brooklyn in the inter est of the organization, says its members there voted almost unan imously for Hill, and claim that success was due to their efforts. Hill's answers to certain questions about the labor question pleased them better than Davenport's did. The Sound papers gleefully re print a recent Orcronum editorial in which it was asserted that Puget sound was Portland's onlv ship ping competitor. The Tacoma Lcdiier savs: "If Portland is our only competitor we have nothing to ear." But Portland is not your only "real competitor" at all. The "real competitor' is the city that is the only seaport of Oregon Astoria, and don't let tht fact escape your memory. Union county is going to ask the legislature next week lo ap propriate $ 5,000 for a wagon road from Baker City to the Pine Creek mining district. Portland favors the idea, as it claims the trade will thus be diverted from Omaha to the "Willamette. No section of the state is more directly interested than Clatsop county in the selection of a sen ator by the legislature which meets at Salem next Monday. We want a free river and we want a man in Washington with Senator Dolph with knowledge, experienceand ability, a soul above sectional prejudice, and readiness to aid in the forwarding of necessary improvements. It is cheaper to ship grain by water than by rail, and even if the Northern Pacific were completed across the Cascades to Puget Sound, proper development oi the magnificent waterway of the Columbia would send all the grain this way. The work of improving the bar of the Columbia has begun: sufficient appropriation is needed to enable the work to be resumed next spring and continue uninter ruptedly through the summer. Congress is loth to make appropri ations of this kind, but now that the work has been started it is far easier to keep it going than it was to overcome the original inertia. A smart wide-awake man who could be useful as well as orna mental is the present need in the .senatorial chair made vacant by the expirntion of Mr. Slater's term. If we were an aggregation of rich communities we might be able to select lofty minds, "grand, gloomy and peculiar," wrapped in mantles of haughtT reserve and only deigning to bestow occasional oracular ut terances to the canaille; but Ore gon wants a worker, western Ore gon particularly; we all have to rustle in our respective spheres, as is the case in all new, undeveloped, sparsely settled countries, and gentlemen of elegant leisure are as much out of place in the sena torial seats of Oregon as in any situation at home. This is a matter of considerable importance to us. Mr. Hermann, who will represent us in the lower house, has been posting himself as to our needs and will no doubt be heard from, but he is only one among three hundred and twenty five, while our senators aro two among seventy-six. The recent call upon stockholders, with the proceeds of lottery bonds, if they should be issued, would raise the total of the liabilities to nearly $288,000,000. De Lessens now admits that the canal will cost twice as much as the Suez canal did, but the cost of that canal was less than $100,000,000, and even at this stage of the worlc on the Panama isthmus he proposes to to multiply that sum by three. To encourage shareholders, he as sures them that the earnings of the Panama canal will be three times as great as those of the can al at Suez. .This assurance shows how desperate the condition of the Panama company has become.
