A Lacing and Bastles. There is one crying sin, however, of which the English women of this generation are more guilty than their American sisters, and that is the sin of tight lacing. The waists of the majority are absurdly drawn in, the more absurdly because it destroys the roundness and perfection of the English figure. The elderly English woman runs to flesh; so does the elderly American ; and in time each of them learns to accept the fact, and Bink down into comfortable age, with its attendant inches and avoirdupois. But the natural size of a waist to ac company a thirty-six or thirty-eight inch bust measure would be twenty three to twenty-four inches ; and when it is reduced by compression to from eighteen to twenty inches, this is an actual loss to beauty of form as well as detrimental to the health. Doubt less there are some foolish girls and women in America who crowd their breathing apparatus into smaller space than nature intended ; but the average size of the American waist being less, there is perhaps less temp tation to reduce it, and the general appearance of women in anv large American city shows that the nat ural standard is more nearly pre served than in London at the present time. On the other hand, we sin more in the matter of bustles and tournures. Such a shelf or projecting bracket at the back of the skirt as may be seen any day and any minute of any day upon Broadway is not vis ible in any part of London. The ex tension of the dres3 is confined to ruffles and to two or three steels at the back, or to a pair of steels and a pad or small "mattress" fastened on the tailor-made (cloth) gowns to the skirt itself. Women of fashion have quite discontinued the use of the removable excrescence called the bustle, nor could one be worn with the close side draperies which are so much used and which so perfectly outline the form. London Letter in Minneapolis Press. Rev. 8am Joaes' Sayings. If I had a creed I'd sell it to a museum. What's culture worth if it's nothing but whitewash on a rascal ? I'd rather be in Heaven learning my A B C's than in hell reading Greek. I have little taste for theology and botany, but I love religion and flow ers. I can't bribe God's grand jurv nor defy the court that tries me the last day. "I have doubts," says one. You just quit yoar meanness and vou will quit doubting. Be honest and pay your debts. There are too many men in the church boarding with their wives. I've seen men not afraid to die, but I never saw a man that was not afraid of the judgment of God. Everybody ought to keep good com pany. There is not an angel in Heaven proof against bad company. It's not so much -when and where a man joins the church. It's all right iust as Ionf as lift stiMrs'tn If A man's hates and his likes deter mine character; a man's affinities determine what he is and wlip he is. I had rather associate with a dog than with a profane swearer. I say things that sound strong, but I've weighed 'em. Ifyou will let me I will cut loose the last ligament that binds you to sin and let you swim out into tile bot tomless ocean of God's love. Perhaps if you do not talk of your religion it is because you liave no religion to talkabout. Folks with ill health don't go around bragging about their physician. The difference between the human race and a horserace is disappearing. You cartJt.on.ellrrpwad3yg. Cure For Iilcs.
