Tiii: defeat of the mugwumps in New York last Tuesday is a source of satisfaction to many who believe that majorities should rule, and who were chagrined to see a little band of political eunuchs de feat Blaine in that state a year ago. The two islands of Long and Manhattan make New York a Democratic state, but the splendid qualities of the statesman Blaine won the admiration and support of so many of his fellow countrymen in New York that he would have carried the state and been elected president in spite of the St. John cranks, had it not been for the cowardly action of the mugwumps, to whom alone his defeat is attributable. Ever since then this godly crowd, who are too good for earth and who would raise a row for precedence in sheol, have been simpering and strutting, inflated with a sense of their own importance. ""We defeated Blaine in 'SI," they complacently announced; "and we will defeat Hill in 'So, just to show how wonderfully in fluential we are." Every man who believes in party dogma de serves congratulation that they didn't beat Hill. Had they suc ceeded in their efforts the state wouldn't have been big enough for these would-be arbiters of po litical destiny. Their defeat may help them to realize that they are not near so bier nor so clever as they thought they were. They are even liable to be mistaken, strange as that may appear io them. Infallibility is denied them, in common with all other sons of men. We have nothing but respect lor a hearty political opponent who fights hard and manfully, and tries his best to win. If he wins let the fruits of victory be his; he has earned them; if he loses, let him get down and keep still, and fix up some way, if he can, to win next time. We have nothing but contempt for political sneaks who take part in party counsels, stay t in consultation with party dele gates till the moment of adjourn- . ment, are bound in honor as well as in assent to stay by the regular nominee and then come out and stick a knife in the man because they and halfadozen more couldn't boss a hundred and fifty oth ers. That is what mugwumpery is, and we are glad to sec it beat en in New York or anywhere else. An idiot can burn a palace erected by a Medici, or break a statue carved by a Thorwaldsen; the hand that strikes him impotent in physical, as he is in mental power, is to be welcomed, come lrom what source it may. It is right and proper to have two great parties in this country; each is needed to watch the other. This is a government of checks and balances, and two great par ties so equally divided a- the Re publican and lViuoi'iatir parties are as necessary to tin? jvrpetuity of our institutions as two eyes to see, or two ears to hear are to the head; but let a man be either a Republican or a Democrat for principle sake, and not be a mis erable mulish mugwump, too good to soil his hands with the dust of practical politics and too self-opinionated to admit that any one else can be riht but himself. little band of political "Warwicks as being won by them. "Alone I did it,1' would have been the ex clamation of every mugwump leader in the state had Davenport and Carr been elected. Just a year ago, at the presi dential election, New York cast 1,150,049 votes. Of these Cleve land received 563,048; Blaine, 502,001; St. John. 25,000. The dispatches show that last Tuesday the Republicans lost ground all over the state: Republicans reso lutely refused to vote lest their votes should appear to be an en dorsement of the mugwumps. Three years ago Republicans rightfully stayed at home and let Folger, the candidate forced on them by the Arthur administra tion, be beaten by 192,000 majori ty. This time, though they had a splendid candidate in Ira Daven port, they suffered him to be beat en by probably 25.000 majority rather than help stuff the mug wumps any fuller of conceit than they were already. The result is not a Democratic triumph nor a Republican defeat. It is simply saying to the mugwumps "Scat." WILL Cut Faster JBXEi KnxmtAMZim. There is probably no better explanation than that given by Roscoe Conk ling in a speech made in New York, September 17, 1S80. Re ferring to the "bloody shirt," he said: It is a relief to remember that this phrase, with the thing it means, is no invention of our poli tics. It dates back to Scotland, three centuries ago. After a mas sacre in Glenfruin, not so savage as has stained our annals, 220 widows rode on white palfreys to Sterling Tower, bearing each on a spear her husband's bloody shirt. The appeal waked Scotland's slumbering sword, and outlawry and the block made the name of Glenfruin terrible to victorious Clan Alpine, even to the third and fourth generation. By order of Committee. It was unfortunate for Daven port that the mugwumps endorsed him. The simple fact that the dilletantes who swear by Harper's Weekly, the New York Times and the Brooklyn Union endorsed him doubtless made thousands who couldn't forget last fall stay at home and not vote at all. For every vote the mugwump jour nals brought Davenport he "lost a thousand indignant voters who re fused to aid in a triumph that would be arrogantly claimed by a Notice to Columbia River and Bar Pilots.
