President Gates, of Butger's Col lege, says: "Every young man has a fortune in the fact of his youth. The. energy of youth is unblunted by de feat, or worn by hope deferred. With age one becomes more conservative and looks at as impossible what a, younger person would, endeavor to accomplish, in many cases with suc cess. The effort, even if there be a failure, is a grand success. Self-confidence, or self-conceit, if you vish to. call it so, is a great thing. A young man's fortune is not to be found in inherited wealth or social position. Every man is the arbiter of lfis own fortune. Gracious manners or busi-. ness habits are good things to culti vate, but are not all. "Will-power is the young man's fortune. It is the essence of the man. A young man with only little will-power is a fore gone failure. It should be cultivated. Genius is a gift of God and should not cause pride, but an honest pur suit 01 uuues is an exniDiuon 01 wm power and is something to be proud of. Well-directed, educated will power is what a young man needs." Fixed Tor the Carnival. When the evening's fun was over tho pair of jolly fellows discarded their costumes and attempted to dis card the negro tint of their faces, but, to their dismay, hard scrubbing and a liberal use of soap and water failed to produce any more effect on the black than to make it glow and be come if anything, the more realistic. The pair explained the difficulty to a crowd of sympathizers, and by advice a Turkish bath establishmatr was resorted to; but at the late hour of the night the bath was not in running order, and in despair a prominent druggist was sought out, and while the embarrassing trouble was ex plained the druggist was begged to prescribe some solution that would turn the black faces white again. It. transpired that the gay carnivalists had on the recommendation of a friend, used hemp-black and lard in the stead of the popular burnt cork, and the man of chemicals assured them that he could not wash their faces and time alone could do it for them. Providence Journal. IXow "vTehster Stopped the Publica tion of Cabinet Secrets. The Cabinet meetings, are, you know, always secret. Just olF the Cabinet room is the library, am' when Webster was Secretary of ? .re it was noticed that the 'Cabinet meet ings were reported in full in certain of the newspapers. Various mean3 were undertaken to find out the leaky member of the Cabinet, but each member up and down denied that he had told anything to anyone. One day Webster excused himself and went out into the library while the others tiKed as usual, lie found he could hear every word uttered within. He ca ae back "and said he thought the tcrets must have gotten out through a correspondent listening in the library. After this the library was Icked during Cabinet sessions, and the reports immediately ceased. An Ago of Too Much Xfcatllng. Prof. Blackie says he wishes him self back in tho Middle Ages, when singing was the only sermon and the minstrel the only "teacher. We are running too much to books. The people don't come together any more. There are no more grand bublie reunions of the masses. A Inan buys a book or a paper, and, hurrying borne, shuts the u "or and reads. Everybody reads, ihnter a Family circle nowadays and man, woman and child has his, her or its uose poked down between printed pages. It's read, read. Absolute feilence reigns throughout the house. It's despairing. I sometimes feel like yelling and demolishing the furniture, wben I get into such a Bolemn-visaged circle, as a sort of coun'er-irritant. These human read ing machines are stuffed full of the Sausage meat of literature. When the world was the wisest it read no books. Its teachers taught from nature. New York Graphic. Cure For Piles. Many persons especially parents object to quack nostrums a3 likely to engender or encourage a love for stronc drink. Thov are right. Bet tor to die of disease than of drunken ness.
