I She gaUjj jstorimt. ASTORIA. OREGON THURSDAY OCTOUER 12). 18S5 A i.u.Mr.Ei: journal makes the as as eonishing: statement that 40 per cent of Minnesota's 1,117,000 peo ple will go to the woods logging this winter. Uwoets received from ten counties- in New York state by the woman's suffrage convention, announce that a large number of women will attempt to vote at the election next Tuesday. The song of the shirt is still sung in New York. Shirt finish ers1 wages have been reduced from SI. 24 a dozen shirts to 95 cents a dozen, and the most they can make is six shirts a day. Tin: -new English parliament will contain G"t 0 members, of whom about 00 will be Parnellitcs. The liberal party hopes to secure a small majority over both Parnell ites and conservatives, but the margin will be very narrow on their most sanguine expectations. Me.v who have traveled along the Mexican border say that Chi nese are swarming over the line into Arizona and southern Califor nia. They come in large parties every day, and no attempt is made to keep them out. They are in vading all branches of labor in the soutnwest. Tin: statement of the Northern Pacific railroad for September shows gross earnings of 1,225,000: operating expenses and taxes, &5G0,000, leaving net earnings of 005,000. This is a decrease in gross earnings of 12,000, in oper ating expenses and taxes of 107, 000, and an increase of net earn ings of 95,000. A CORRESPONDENT of the lioxlon lieconl snys the Knights of labor ought to prohibit their members from using the term boss as designating the foreman or head of an establishment. It is a degrading word, and smacks of servitude. In this country it has no rightful place outside the negro plantation, and men of the north have no use for it. The crowd of cod fish at the Lototen Islands, Norway, is n marvelous sight to see. Billions assemble together and form a shoal 120 to ISO feet high. The season lasts two months, and on a good day 7,000 boats bring in 2,000,000 codfish. Part of this is bound to be used as manure for the soil. It is so rich that the crops more than repay for an up-, parent waste of food material. There is now no doubt that the number of Christians massacred during the summer in Tonquin, Anam and Cochin China was even much greater than was at first stated. The first account set down the total number of massacres at 10,000, but the superior of the for eign missions in I'.-iri now Mutes that 24,000 Chri.-tian, including several French missionaries, were murdered. Seven or eight thou sand Christians escaped. A New York dispatch of the 27th says. "The Democrats are in high spirits over the analysis of the registration of this cit-. There is a total of 210,000; 2,000 more than in 1SS2, when Cleve land was elected governor. The increase over 1S82 in the five Re. 1 publican assembly districts is less than 1,000, the same districts fall ing off from the registration of last year of 7,300. The districts which show a large increase over the total of lSS2are almost entire ly Democratic districts, and the largest increase is shown in dis tricts' which the Republicans never even attempted to carry, and it is not caused by the mugwumps silk stockmg vote,. either. The rival candidates for country offices all crop' out as friends of Hill, and give him the benefit. of their efforts. A vote of over 190,000 is expected, with a majority of 50,000 to 75, 000 in this city for Hill." The decrease in the postal rev enues for the last fiscal year is larger than expected. The law to reduce letter postage from 3 to 2 cents was enacted about two years ago. For the last three-quarters of the fiscal year the effect on the revenue was inconsiderable. This was attributed in a large measure to the great increase in the number of 2-cent stamps that were used to inclose business circulars. It had been expect ed that this increase would continue, so there would not be a large reduction in the postal reve nues, but this expectation has not been realized. The first complete fiscal year under operation of the reduced postage law closed on the 30th of last June. It was not a good business year. It had been supposed that the deficiency would not be more than 4,000,000. On the contrary, it will be about $7,000,000, These figures are not to be taken as accurate, as the president's wish that the bureau reports shall jiot be given to the public in advance of his message makes it impossible to obtain exact fijmres.
