The Medical officers of .Schools As sociation, which was formed in Eng land in 1SS4, has just issued a code oi rules for the prevention of infectious and contagious diseases in schools, which contains some valuable sug gestions and which is important as being a formal expression of opinion on the part of medical men and sani tarians who have specially investigat ed the subj'ect of school hygiene. The first section relating to general hy siene gives the usual advice with re gard to house-drainage, dust-bins, etc., and advises mat uie metm-iu officer of the school shall inspect the premises at least once a month and that he should make an annual re turn of the sickness in the school to the aovernini bod v. With regard to the length of quar antine that should be required if a pupil has been exposed to an infec tious disease, it is stated that this de pends chiefly upon whether the school has or has not that very valu able safeguard a disinfecting appar atus, which apparatus should be large enough to hold a full-sized mat tress. If the school possess such an apparatus, then the quarantine should be a day or two more than the longest known period of incubation of the disease in question; if not. the lcriod should be longer still, as there is no definite time when the clothing is certain to be free from infection. The following quarantine times, after exposure to infection, arc rec ommended as safe if thorough disin fection be carried out on the pupil's return to school : TO SAN FRANCISCO.
