Character on the Outside of a Book.
A well-bound book will open easily
and will close firmly. While reading
it will not be necessary to press the
covers back, and when laid down
they will not gapi apart. It will be
neither still" as east iron and heavy,
with beveled cdes nor limp, though
fashion at present requires it to be
... ,. .: , j
either one Or the o.ncr. . good
binding is elastic ; it will yiehl, but
it will return to its place, if covered
with lull crushed morocco, which
makes the finest and best covering,
the polishing of the leather will bi
a groat test of the binder's care and
taste. Levant morroco comes with a
large grain, and if left so is easily
damaged or torn. It should there
fore be crushed with the "polisher,"
a large burnishing tool, and the whole
appearance of the book depends on
how this crushing is done. It may
be so slight as to be of little service,
and to look more like the result of ac
cident than of design, or it may be
carried so far that the desirable va
riety of texture is quite lost, or it
may be uneven, spotty, and slovenly.
The gilt tooling and lettering should,
in modern books, be neat and sharp.
The ornamental tooling, which is
done with small stamps, called irons,
though now universally engraved in
brass, may be so arranged as to form
very pretty patterns or the reverse.
It follows that a book may have as
much character in its outside appear
ance as its inside, and very often it
has more substance. Like every
thing that is done by hand, it may lie
vulgar or quiet, coate or elegant,
flimsy or substantial. There is no
sort of hand work that docs not rise
at times to the dignity of a line art, and
bookbinding is certainly no excep
tion. Tho Cray Otiilt at Xciv Orleans.
At the great Imposition where tho
whole world has brought its best pro
ducts of industry, where all nations
have exhibits ot their highest skill,
where art is, or ought to lie, seen at
its best, even here the unsightly
patchwork, of which many have not
yet learned to be ashamed, finds a
place and is ollercd as a specimen of
the skill of woman. Here the crazi
est of crazy notions the properly
named "crazy quilt" is put on exhi
bition, that all the world may note tho
wonderful skill of American woman
hood. What is it? A token of mis
sjcnt lime, of keen eyes weakened,
of silk wasted in embroidering bits
of silk scraps that should have found
their place in the rag bag, a much
more suitable appropriation of them
than making them up at such cost
into bed covers, which are neither
useful nor ornamental. A man who
should so waste his time would be
considered a fit subject for the luna
tic asylum. Should a carriage maker
gather up all the little scraps of leath
er in his own establishment and those
of his friends and proceed to make a
patchwork covering of the most atro
cious combination of colois for his
carriages and buggies when he had
at hand a much more suitable mater
ial at 100 per cent less cost and labor,
and when finished, if he should ask
that his fantastic piece of work
should be exhibited at the World's
Fair, what would be thought of him9
Could he possibly find a plaee for his
wonderful work" of art in the great
Exposition?
Perfumery TaliitnriL
One who is a social oracle tell mo
that it is high treason for any of her
sex or station to use .-cents. A very
mild cologne is baiely tolerated, but
no Lubin or other extract, however
delicate and fragrant. Where there
is so much of the aitificial that must
be natural. I asked a man of the
world about it. lie replied: "What
you have heard about peifuniery be

A young girl came here and was in

beautiful, rarely accomplished and a

Just a Little Too Smart.
A student of the University of
Texas being short of funds wrote to
his father in Galvesten: "Send me

The old gentleman replied the next
mail inclosing $30, with the remark

What Parents Fear.
ATany persons especially parents
object to quack nostrums as likely
to engender or encourage a lovo for
strong drink. They are rigbt. Bet
ter to die of disease than of drunken
ness. The use of Parker's Tonic does
not involve this danger. It not only
builds up the system, curing all ail
ments of the stomach, liver and kid
neys, but it stimulates without in
toxicating and absolutely cures the
appetite for liquor.
