the legislature can appropriate

Francisco, struck last Friday morn
ing because the proprietors re
fused to discharge fiftv-eight
whites. The hitter had been em
ployed, and were found much more
effective, and did neater and bet
ter work than thi Mongols. The
firm is determined to lep.'ace all
the Chinese with whites, and say
the Mongolians shaH not dictate
to them.

tunnels, and set into dynamic ac
tivity 300,000 pounds of explo
sives! The feat is unequalled in,
the wildest tales of masric.
The recent sale of the North
ern Pacific lands comprises several
townships in northwestern Minne
sota, amounting in all to about
113,000 acres. It is estimated
that $7 per acre will be netted, or
a total of $791,000. The purchase
monej' is part cash, and the re
mainder, 500,000, is in preferred
stock. This will retire from cir
culation forever over 50,000 shares
of that stock. The purchasers are
a number of capitalists, headed by
Charles Watrous, formerly of Cal
ifornia. The sale is supposed to
haye been brought about by Sena
tor Sabin, of Minnesota, who is a
member of the purchasing syndi
cate. A great body of the land is
heavily timbered. It is the in
tention ol the owners to begin the
manufacture of lumber on a large
scale at once. Watrous has been
in the lumber business several
years, and was once well known
in political life in California.

bridge were somewat startled to
see a small boat suddenby col
lapse, whereby five or six persons,
including a lady, a clergyman and
some officers were thrown into the
water. They ought, by all " the
laws of analogy, to have been
struggling in that element, but
they were not. On the contrarj',
they appeared perfectly at their
ease, and making no movement,
rested calmly with their heads
above the surface. The explana
tion of the phenomenon was that
the clothes worn by these people
were made of a fabric in which
threads of cork were interwoven
with other material. Mr. Jackson,
the inventor, is to be congrat
ulated on the complete success of
his ingenious device. Timid sea
travelers .can now equip them
selves in garments which, while
undistinguishable from those of
ordinary mortals, will make death
by drowning an utter impossi
