(?) She gatftj gtftovwu. ASTORIA. OREGON: FKIDAY .. OCTOBER 23. 1SS3 ELECTING A MAYOR. OxDeceniber 9tli the annual muni cipal election takes place in this city, on which day will be chosen success ors to Messrs. Trenchard and Cooper, the retiring councilmen and .T. W. Hume, the present mayor. For the position of mayor are mentioned the names o several; among others Messrs. Pulton, Page, Cleveland, Bowlby, Trullinger, Dement, Sped den, Bain, Bocfc, etc., etc. There is no lack of material for a good mayor; the chief defect would appear to be that the kind of mau that would make a good mayor is generally the man that doesn't want the place, for the reason that there is no escaping censure.. Thd principal function of the may or of Astoria would seem to be to act as chairman at meetings of the coun cil. For the first three weeks after his election ho is an object of consid erable solicitude, as he has the ap pointing of a few petty offices. After that he ceases to be anything more than the occupant of a position that bestows neither trust, honor or profit. If he does anything he is blamed; if he does nothing he is blamed; if he tries to do anything the blame goes on; it 'he tries to do nothing the blame is still there. The result is that the average As torian can't afford to be mayor. "We are a young business community; we are all mostly workers, men who have to earn, a living for self and family, and who cannot afford the mayoralty any more than they can afford a steam yacht, or a lawsuit in the supreme court. No man cares to earn the hos tility of the community just for the fun of having the privilege of sitting in the chair at council meetings for two years. I yon think this is too much to say just think back: Hume, Hahn, Ireland, Parker, and so on.. Did any one of these men ever get a bit of credit? They all did the best they could-: each one gave of his time to the city, and what did any one that ever was mayor of Astoria earn but ill will? There isn't a cent in the of fice; the man who has anything to do worth doing or attending to usually wouldn't be bothered with it, and the only fortunate thing about it is that the community has been no worse served. -Our only object in commenting on this matter is to express tho op inion that a little more charity, a little less haste to ascribe false motives to a man's actions, a little more confidence in the upright prin ciples of character, would come into good play in this as in other situa tions. ' There is alwavs a lower deep, a.profouuder gulf, and should Astoria be saddled with a mayor whose first thought was self and -who saw in the mayoralty only an opportunity to convert grass into hay, we will have no one to blame but ourselves. Con tinued grumbling on the part of those who stav away from the polls and do all their kicking the morning after election has made it no honor to any business man to be elected mayor of Astoria. And this should not be. Ordinarily tho ehoosing of a man to be chief officer of a city should be an honor to the one select ed, a trust to be firmly guarded and a responsibility to be faithfully carried. Beyond and aside from this carping, faultfinding spirit that can see 110 good in anyone, there exists no reason why such hliould not bo the ca3e. It is not a question of politics; it is a question of personal fitness. The mayoralty is essen tially an honorable position, and can be so; this takes no less a proper choice ionthe part of our citizens than a proper courtesy and :t tacit assuinp ' tion that the one chosen menus right. If the office does not possess them 3 these characteristics should at least be restored to it Perhaps this may be asking too mucn. me eitort is, Jiowever, worth making. Latest returns indicate that the? Democrats carried Hamilton county in the recent Ohio election, which would give a Democratic majority in the state senate. As the Republicans have a majority )Dsix in the house, a joint ballot would give a clear Republican . majority of three. Senator Sher- rnan's present term expires in March,' 1SS7. He has been in .congress continuously since 1S55, . with the exception of the four years which he served as secretary ' of the treasury under Haves. He ' left the house in 1SG0 to take "hris seat in the senate. As e has never failed of re-election when a candidate, and as lib . desires another term at the close of his present one, it is tolerably certain that he will be his own successor. Thirty years of unin terrupted public service ought to give any man a strong backing. Coxkt.ixg is the latest cenvert: he sees which way matters are go ing and hastens to get in out ot the wet. 5Tis said he will begin delivering Republican speeches in New York state next week. One blast upon his bugle horn were worth ten thousand men last November. Now, he is superflu ous. KEW TO-DAY. Special Auction! ELEGANT H 1 Wednesday, Oct. 28, 10:30 A. M. BY DIRECTION OF C. AY.
