The emperor of Germany lias con ferred an order of knighthood upon Sir Joseph Lister, the eminent British surgeon, whose anti-septic method of surgery has done so much for suffer ing humanity. A hnwn model of gigantic size has heen made for an American museum by Buechi of Berne. It is abouL four feet in height by two feet and a halt in width, and shows the intricate mechanism of the brain in detail. A .specimen of ancient dentistry, in the form of dental bridge-work made by the Ktruscans in the fifth century before Christ, has been discovered in an old buriai place near t'ivita Vecchia by Hr. .J. (J. Van Marter, of Koine. Kxperitftenta recently made with wet and dry coal in the evaporation of water have shown that a loss of from fifteen to twenty-five per cent results when coal is used while wet that is, the heating value of coal is that much less when water is added. The parasitic diameter of diphthe ria has been established by two inves tigators Klabs and IelHer who have independently found organisms which haw been proven by experi ments on guinea pigs and birds to be the specific germs of the disease. An interesting exhibition of whale skeletons and products has been held in Hamburg. The most imposing exhibit was the skeleton of the blue whale, the greatest animal on earth. It measured 73 feet in length, and was mounted in its natural position. According to Hervc-Jlongon, the system of telegraphic weather warn ings in France was created by Lcvcr rierin 1S53. In ISTS.a central meteor ological bureau was established, and numerous observatories had been erected all over the country, while Paris was in telegraphic connection with 1,500 stations. Potato Celluloid. A material pos sessing the properties of celluloid is now made from potatoes, and is being used in France for imitation meers chaum pipes, and for billiards balls. Tlie substance is prepared by boiling the peeled potatoes in dilute sulphuric acid eight parts of acid to one hun dred parts of water for thirty-six hours, and then drying between blotting paper by pressure. In the opinion of Sir John La wes, a greater profit may be returned from sewage if cast into the sea than if ap plied to the land, for the reason that sewage will supply the enormous quantities of phosphate of lime, potash, and nitrogen which fishes re quire, but which exist in the sea only in small quantities. As much, at least, of there instances should be returned to the sea as our fisheries take from it. Balloons in the Soudan Campaign. The first attempts at Briti-di mili tary ballooning are to be made in Africa, three balloons having baen sent out for the purpose of making captive ascents for watching the en emyjs movement. A hundred or more iron cylinders containing com pressed dydrogen for inflating bal loons form part of the equipment, and a gas-factory and pumping station will be established at Suakin for re filling these reset voirs. Telephonic communication will be maintained between the balloons and the ground. An Age of Horn. A variety of pre historic objects in horn such as am ulets, 'cups, knives, daggers, rings, buttons, bracelets, etc., have been found in a stratum existing at a depth of about five feet in the mud of Lake Neuenburg, in Switzerland. The finder, Herr G. Kaiser, believes them to be older than the stone and bronze implements of the same locality, and he proposes to call the period to which they belong "the age of horn." It may well be doubted, however, whether the ancient lake people ever experienced an epoch for which such a name would be justified, as it is evident that some implement proba bly of stone or bronze must have been used in cutting the horn. Lung Diseases of "Wild Animal". Tn the period from October, 1 SSI, to the close of 1SS4, there died in the gardens of the London Zoological so cictv oS.J mammals, 140S birds, and 7SS' reptiles. Mr. J. Bland Sutton states, in a report to the Pathological society, that of the death anions the mammals only five were from genu ine pulmonary tuberculosis orcom sumption, showing that the general notion that wild animals in captivity are especially liable to that disease is erroneous." Of the mammals :i0. were quadrumana. and of them thirty per cent had other forms of pulmo nary affection. Bronchitis attacks a very (great variety of animals, but other well known chest diseases ap pear to be chiefly confined to certain groups. The cafnivora, for instance, are very liable to double pleurises and pneumonia, while ruminita have the peculiar disease known as "Perl sucht" the so-called bovine tuber culosis. In birds is noticed a liabili ty to inflammation of the airsacs, which gives rise to peculiar exuda tion in which mould develops and spreads through the lung. The Polar Light. Following up small experiments made in 1871, Pro fesEor Selim Lemstrom, of the Finnish Meteorological station at Sodankyla, Lapland, attempted in 1SS2 to pro duce an aurora on a large scale from the electricity supposed to be flow ing from the air to the earth, the means employed being a "discharg ing apparatus," consisting of a net work of pointed wire conductors spread over the top of a mountain, insulated and connected with a gal vanometer and the earth at the foot of the mountain. A diffuse light- which the spectroscope showed to be identical with the aurora borealls, was often seen hovering over the wires, and on some occasions rays be came visible. Continuing his re searches in 1SS.J and 1S8-I, Professor Lemstrom now finds himself able to as.ert very positively that the aurora borealis, which has long been a dis puted enigma, is the reMtit of an at mospheric electric current, and that this current can be measured and studied by means of his "disrh-irsr-ing apparatus." The zone of fr quent auroras in the northern hen"-? phere is a narrow belt ncircliiig ; i magnetic pole, anil crossbill lit meridian of Washington in latitude ")li degree, and that of St. Petcsbu.g in 71 degrees. "How do you manage when as signing rooms to your guests to locate one on the fourth or fifth floor and the other on the second, when each pays the same per diem?" was asked the landlord of one of the hotels by a reporter a few days since. "You had better ask one of the clerks," replied the boniface with a smile. "They know all about such things and will doubtless communi cate the secret to you." The reporter sought out the clerk and repeated the same question. His reply was laconio and to the point : "Wc size 'em up." "But do you never make mistake ?" asked the reporter. "Seldom," answered the clerk, and perceiving that the reporter would not be choked off he contin centin ued: "One reason why we seldom make mistakes is that we can judge, in a measure, by tho way a man reg isters of what he has been accus tomed to at home. If a man will be contented with a small room in his own house, he is not likely io make any very decided objection to the same accommodation at a hotel. This is more especially true in the case of those who. like merchants .from the interior, come to the city but once or twice a year to buy goods. They are too full of business to think much about the kind of room they are occupying, and so long as they have a place to sleep, thev don't care whether it is on the first floor or next the roof, besides, they don't like to have any trouble. They would rath er put up with a few inconveniences than raise a row. This is all the bet ter for us, for we can save the best rooms for guests who will be willing to pay a higher figure. The success ful hotel clerk is not only able to do this, but he can almost invariably tell at a glance just how much a man will stand, and he is very careful not to over-step the line. Again, look at the way some people register. The man who is unaccustomed to travel ing and stopping at hotels picks up the pen as if he was afraid of it, and is singularly precise in the formation of the letters composing his name. He writes plain 'John Blank, Blank town,' as nicely as he is able, and is perfectly satisfied if the clerk takes him by the hand and says, as clerks always do : ' 'Mr. Blank I'm glad to see you.' "The full-fledged drummer or tour ist is easily identified. He will waltz up to the desk, dash off his name in a careless fashion, toss his over-coat and grip to the bell-boy, and try to talk with four or five i)eople at once. He must have a fair room, or there will be trouble at the oliice. A young man on his first trip will demonstrate his Spencerian education ; a country lawyer will write his name so that neither he nor anybody else can de cipher the hieroglyphics, while the rural legislator will be anxious to let everybody know he has a right to prefix honorable to his name. These characters are universal, and almost invariably we can get at a man's character and position in the world by an inspection of his chirography. ""In small towns hotel clerks nave a practice of giving the most desir able rooms to parties who claim to come from some large city, for the reason that they should have a bet ter knowledge of hotel life than their rural brethern. Travelers are begin ning to realize this, and will register as from New York or Boston, in or der that they may get a good room, and they win the trick. The most essential thing in the make-up of a hotel clerk is to able to fill the house from the top down, and at the same time make everyone believe they are getting the best rooms." The young minister got along very well with the openintr prayer and the Scripture lesson, but when he had read only a verse or two of the hymn he became confused, stammered, and at last his voice failed him entirely. As he seemed to be taken suddenly ill my father fin ished the service, preaching an ex temporaneous discourse. On the way home in the carriage the young man, who by that time had quite revived, being pressed for an explanation con cerning his conduct, finally con cen fessed: "Well, sir, it was merely an unaccountable nervousness. Just a I was reading the second stanza of the hymn a gentleman ca:ie into the church and sat down in a iiroad-atslu pew directly before me, iing such great staring black eyes upon me that I was frightened out of my wits! Until he was then loM hi did not know that Daniel Webster was a member of the congregation or an in habitant of the town." Thirteen is an unlucky nuinlu-r for a poor man to have in his family.
