Sherman's habils during Li3 campaign were of the simplest. He went to bed very late and got up , early, and thus prevented tne enemy from catching him napping. The presumption is that he played card3 at night, as he was always trying to rifirr this f!nnirrlfmtf-?- T-On?? before the reveille sounded his headquarters , were in the saddle, as he used his ( saddle for a pillow, following the il- 1 Insirious example of Gen. Pope, who habitually had his heftdquartcrs in j the same place, (aen. fcherman al ways gave orders to arouse him at any hour of the night if reports came in. He was more anxious to see the re ports thanthe was to see tao report ers. During the Atlanta campaign be6ct the example to hib troops of discarding tents, which made him in tensely unpopular. Even the olDcers were only allowed to have a tent fly. They thought Sherman was too fly aXtojjeihcr. He reduced baggage to minimum. No soldier or officer" was allowed to earn more than one mini mum. On one occasion, observing that a member of his staff had an ex tra minimum tied to his saddle, h'e wrenchdl it off and wore it out over 'Kim. He had only ono tent, and as (bat was used by his clerical force, -einfcr that his chaplain had it all fevhircsell. Tho Confederates sym pathized with Sherman when it rained and frequently attempted to take him ijv-outof tho wet. It was a damp shame on the part of Sherman not to acatify their little whim, but he never aid. it used to be said that his head quarters were in a candle-box, be cause vmen he was in light vac ching order one or two small boxes, emptied of the candles' they originally con tained served to transport his- papers. The soldiers called him "Old Te cump" and "Uncle Billy," the latter nickname coming into general use in tie arm3T during the "March to the Sea." At hist headquarters the sol diers called him "Uncle" because be was the man they relied on to get them out of a tight place. For the same reason a pawn-broker is called "my uncle." A single sentry stood guard ; but if the sentry happened to be a married man he was not required to procure a divorce. Nobody, whether officer or private, who want ed to speak lo the general, was stopped, with the exception of Gen. Hood, or Gen. Joe Jonston, or some other Confederate. He always had encouraging words for the soldiers when he rode along, telling them what a great thing it was lo lay down a leg or arm on the altar oil their country. Sherman was great in war as a strategist, but he betrayed still more genius in the field of politics when he refused to accept the repub lican nomination for Presideicy. In that instance he betrayed gjnius of the loftiest order. The other day I saw an unique and very beautiful screen. The frame was of ebony and the four pauels of stained glass. The effect was won derfully rich. It seemed as if "gar nished with all manner of precious stones." Dies of beautiful Venetian glass were surrounded by jeweled glass, the facets of which were almost as brilliant reflectors of the light as precious stones. In soft contrast to this brilliancy was the light of the clirysoprase and jasper glass. Each piece of glass was especially chosen for this superb screen. Uelow the glass was a design of rays and gar lands of leaves in wrought brass. The Ecrecn was placed where it mellowed the light from a south window which shone directly upon it and delighted all who beheld it, while in the even ing the light in the adjacent room showed the colors to full advantage. He was a level-headed doctor who Ijired a bouse next door to a roller kating rink. Cure For Piles. Piles are frequently preceded 13 :: sense of wi-ij-lit in the hack, loins and lower part of the nhiimneii. causing the patient to suppose he h:is some ohVction of the kidneys or ncighboiing organs. At times, symptoms of indigestion are present, flatulency, uneasiness of the stomach, etc. A moisture like perspir ation, producing a very disagreeable itching, after getting warm, is a com mon attendant. Blind. I'lccdmg and Itching Piles yield at once to the appli cation of Dr. Uosanko's Pile remedy, which acts directly upon the parts ef fected, absorbing the Tumors, allaying the intense itch ing, and effecting a per manent cure. Price r0 cents. Address The Dr. JJosnnko Medicine Co., Pioua. O. Sold by J.W. Conn. It1 is said that General Grant through the entire war never swore once. There was no reason he should. The other side were the ones who did the swearing. What Parents Fear. Many persons especially parents object to quack nostrums as likely to engender or encourage a love for strong drink. They are right. Bet ter to die of disease than of drnnken ness. The use of Parker's Tonic does not involve this danger. It not only builds up the system, curing all ail ments of tho stomach, liver and kid neys, but it stimulates without in toxicating and absolutely cures the appetite for liquor.
