f5) ASTORIA, OREGON: TIIUKSDAY OCTOHEK n.1835 A little moist. There are twenty-two feet of sauil aud "water on Yaquina bar. The telephone central office will be moved to-day to the residence of the superintendent, over Eaton & Carna liau's. Of the 23,000 cases of salmon that went to San Francisco on the Ancon last week, 14,109 go on board the Wasdale for Liverpool. Several vessels are due. The Gri.se dale is out 1GS days, the Abeona 157, the Primera, City of Florence and Jtforcross are also looked for. Fine silver side salmon are report ed unusually plenty in the Nekani kum this fall. They are being caught and smoked aud salted in large num bers. The land department of the North ern Pacific during the fiscal year end ing .Tune 5, 18S3, sold 81,523 acres of laud in Oregon aud Washington ter ritory, receiving $345,3S0. There is a package at Aug. Daniel son's sample rooms, adressed to O. Nelson, from Wm. Pf under & Co., Portland. The owner will please call for same aud pay charges. It is said that there are 10,OC0 un employed men in San Francisco. The restaurauts where a meal is furnished for ten or fifteen cents are the busiest of any iu the city. A printer named Graves, foreman of the Spokaue Falls Jlerieir, at tempted suicide last Friday and was not expected to survive. He had been in Portland for some time be fore. These arc times that render econ omy an important attainment, and ladies who wish to gain some useful hints in that respect might do well to visit Mrs. Malcolm's milliuery es tablishment. The contract for burying the bodies who die while county charges was yesterday let to J. O. lloss for $13.50 per each interment It would appear to be a very low rate when compared with ordinary funeral charges. A San Francisco dispatoh of the 13th says the Tom Corwin, which has heretofore been acting as guardian of the United States government's in terests in Arctic waters, is to be with drawn from that duty soon, and will then be stationed on the Columbia river, for which station she was orig inally built The Astoria ladies' coffee club wijl have another pleasant social at their rooms to-morrow evening to which a general invitation is extended. The ladies would particularly like the lib eral patronage of the members of the fire department to which the club is so valuable an adjunct. The State crossed out at noon yes terday. The Willamette arrived in; the Caonabo sailed for Queenstown. She carries 37,920 bus. wheat, worth $28,000. The Grasmere which has been at Sand Island for several days, was towed up. An American ship, supposed to be the Ulice S. Southard, 184 days from New York, was reported outside yesterday afternoon. Over at Seattle the women have all agreed to do their own washing and thus forward the auti-Chinese move ment. Now there's some style about that. Whenever the ladies take hold in earnest the cause they favor is as sured of success. It the women of Seattle don't get tired, and if the men don't get expecting too much iu the way of polished linen, the Seattle Chinese laundries will have to go out of busiuess. Last June Dr. ,T. B. C. Phillips, of Chicago, fouuded the Hawthorne sanitarium iu Portland with Dr. E. Bailey of that city. A few days ago Dr. Phillips disappeared with $100 or $500 belonging to the concern, and sent from San Francisco a letter to his wife saying she would never see him again and telling her that after a year she could get a divorce. She has two children and is entirely des titute. The Oregon ia?i says ho wjis a scholar. He certainly was no gen tlemau. Iu November, 18S3, thero were three policemen, and the town got on all right, now there are six. Some taxpayers want to know why six should be necessary this fall when half that number seemed enough in the fall of 'S3. As a matter of busi ness the question naturally eccurs: wh atis the necessity of so many at present? What business man would retain twice the number of men iu his employ that he needed? Of course if he was under obligation to them and couldn't dispense with them the matter would be different Amended School Laws, The new edition of the school laws ordered by the legislative assembly is now published. Full supplies for the use of school officers have been forwarded by the superintendent of public instruction to the several county superintendents for distribu tion. Each school director and clerk is entitled to a copy and will be sup plied by the county superintendents. . . PERSONAL. .Tndgo Deady came up from Ft. For Year Ending September 110th 1883. Oitice oy CuiKr Ekoiseee A. F. D., ( AsTouiA, Or-, Oct. 1st. 18S.1. ) To the Hon. Mayor and City Coun cil, of Astoria, Oreyon. GkktiiEMEx: I beg leave to herewith submit my report as Chief Engineer o the As toria Fire Departmen for the year ending Sept. 30th, 18S5. The following is a list of property of the Astoria Fire Department, viz: ASTORIA KXGIXE CO. XO. 1. One 2d class Amoskeag engine (steam) aud heater, one hose cart. 1600 feet of rubber hofee ,(in good condition), 2 rubber nozzles, 14 spanners, 1 tender cart, 4 Neeley leak stops, 1 Y, 3 torches jpne single and 2 double swinging brass), 1 jack screw, 2 lamps, 1 large wrench and 1 small wrench, 1 die and 1 slay tube die, 7 sets couplings (extra), KKSCUnKNOIKK CO. XO. 2. Ono 3d class Silsby Engine (steam) aud heater, lhosc cart, 1 4 wheel hose carriage; belonging to Dept and lo cated at Rescue Engine house, 1 ten der cart 200 feet cotton hose (good). 1G50 feet rubber hoso (850 feet 1st class and 800 feet fair), 3 spanners' 2 torches, (cheap), G Neely leak stop.s j 2 Ys, 2 socket wrenches, 1 rubber noz zle 1 vise, 1 hose expander, S expand ing rings, 1 extra set cams for Silsby (two large). AIiEKT HOOK AXU &ADDEK CO. XO. 1. One third-class hook and ladder truck, (good); 9 ladders: lSO-ft., 224 ft, 1 lG-ft, and 3 roof; 4 Babcocks (good); 8 axes; 2 steel crowbars, and 1 iron crowbar; 30 leather buckets; 2 torches; 2 hooks and chains; 1 dozen dogs and rings (for fire line): 3 dozen Babcock charges. One Gamewell lire alarm system, G boxes in good condition, 1 fire bell and tower, 17 fire trap indicators. There has been during the year twenty-two alarms, of which two were false aud one practice. Total losses, nineteen fires, aggro gates $11.G90, with an insurance of $9,700. The department was very efficient duriug the year, responding to the alarms with alacrity and always do ing good work. I have made a personal inspection of the engine houses aud properly of the department aud find them to be in first-class condition, with the ex ception of the heater o' llescue En gine Co. No. 2, which"! call your im mediate attention to. I would recommend that the city purchase, as soon as convenient, re lief valves for each engine together with the necessary shut-off nozzles; bv so doing the nozzlcmen can at all times handle their apparatus with better effect, and the destruction of property by water would be small if any. Very respectfully yours, .T. G. ClIAItTEUS, Chief Eng. To He Hove Down. A snrvey of the British ship Direct or was made yesterday by Capt. N. Ingersoll and Capt Lombard, who recommended that the remainder of the cargo be removed and the vessel be hove down and repaired. About half of the cargo has already been re moved, and thero is still 280 tons to come out. As usual iu such cases, there are a great many stories in cir culation. Some say the vessel leaked for a long time before arriving here; that when her cargo was removed the seams closed up, but as soou as she was loaded they were pressed open again. At all events it is an unfort unate thing for the owners, who will be put to great expense by the delay and the heaving down and repairing of the vessel. Oreyonian, it. Caught iu San FranciKro. Last spring a noted desperado named Frank Clark, known as "Lone Star," made an assault on a family named Burke in the eastern part ol the citv and after a short coufine- ment in tho county jail broke out and escaped. Since then bhenffltoss has been very solicitous as to his where abouts and as tho result of two days' telegraphing with Chief of Police Crowley of San Francisco, he yester day had the satisfaction of kuowing that "Lone Star" was in jail there awaiting a requisition from Gov. Moody. The requisition was tele graphed for j-esterday afternoon and upon its arrival Clark will be brought here. lri".it Reduction in SilliittTj". "How's your liver r In the comic opera of "TheMikado" his imperial highness say3 : "To make, to some extent, Each evil Lhcr A running riter Of harmless merriment" m A nobler task than making evil livers, rivers of harmless merriment no person, king or laymen, could take upon himself. The liver among the ancients was considered the source of all a man's evil impulses, and the chances are ten to one to-day that if one's liver is in an ugly condition of discontent, some one's head will be mashed before night! "How's your liver?" is equivalent to the inquiry : Are you a bear or an angel to-aa3T? Nine-tenths of the "pure-cussed-ness,y the actions for divorce, the curtain lectures, the family rows, not to speak of murders, crimes, and other calamities, are prompted by the irritating effect of the inactivity of the liver upon the brain. Fother gill, the great specialist, says this, and he knows. He also knows that to prevent such catastrophies nothing equals Warner's Safe Cure renowned throughout the world, as a maker ol " Each evil Lircr A runmnjj rh er Of harmless merriment" "Ways to IJecome.Attractlvo. A Parisian newspaper has been teaching its lady readers "how to be attractive." Surely the readers of the Vic Parixienne ought to be in no need of advice such as the follewing: 'Look confident and indifferent; ex press yourself simply and wiih a voice as sweet as possible. Be keenly alive to everything that passes, yet appear absent minded; know as much as pos sible, yet please by asking questions. Having read every thing, appear igno rant; heard all, always express sur prise; desiring everything, ask for nothing. Be light-hearted to pre serve your beauty; be indulgent to attract sympathy" and so on. These laws some evidently anti-blue stocking laws are laid down as abso lute, with one exception. "Blush neither for shame nor for pleasure," to which is added : "If you can help it." Verily, the good old saying holds good" still: "111 faut souffrir pour etre belle." There are, however, some clauses which might with equal advantage be applied to both sexes. For instance.: " Do not force wit; always listen attentively ; be charit able for your own satisfaction; be frank and you need never be afraid of the truth;" see things at a glance; judge quickly and think more quickly still in order" to keep a cool head.'' But wise as these saws are, and how ever much the world might be bene fited by a more general application of them, they belong decidedly to the category of precepts more easily prcaclked than practiced. The Lillian Disabled. Sunday afternoon, as the steamer Lillian, of Astoria, was passing Ka lama with a large raft of logs in tow, an accident occurred to tho machin ery of quite a serious nature. The craak broke short off, and such was tho force of the stroke made by the piston at that moment that it went through the cylinder head and made a general wreck of the engines. Cap tain Grounds, the owner, was aboard and at once came to this city on the cars. He sent the tug Portland down after the raft and disabled steamer. The latter will be repaired at the Willamette iron works, but will not be ready for service f r four or five days. The cost of repairs will be about 300. Standard, 7.7. Hard Times. G. Hustler, Treas. Astoria, Or., October 13th, 1883. Drove a Sea Captain Crazy. Said an old shipmaster who had commanded at ono time a famous Baltimore clipper, the Lapieing: "The fact of it is that the race of tho Genesta and tho Puritan only illus trates what we proved in our crack American ships here years ago. Three ships were in the coffee trade to Kio. They were tho Yamodin, Aquidneck and tho Gray Eagle, the latter a ship which came from Eio in twenty-sis days, steamer time even now. Tom Pierce, ono of our lead ing merchants, got the idea of a light draft vessel. The three I have named were deep craft of the same general character as the Genesta in line, you understand. He built the barkentine Spotless, now in Balti more harbor. She was of great beam and light draft and she beat the Gray Eagle with ease. The skipper of the Gray Eagle was so broken up by it that he, having sailed his ship yard arms under from Bio in a f utilo effort to beat the Spotless, went crazy and is now in a Pennsylvania insane asylum Philadelphia 2'imeii. Pretty Green Carpet. Tho streets of Forest Grove, except in the business part of the town, are well set with white clover. The clover was introduced in this wise: Several years ago Squiro Hughes sent to San Francisco for twenty-five pounds of white clover, seed. The prico was 75 cents per pound, and as this was regarded as being too high but very little was sold. The bulk of the seed lay in Mr. Hughes' store, until despairing of selling it, he took it out one day and went forth and sowed up one street and down an other, tho seed fell upon good ground, and has yielded so abundant ly that the town has now a green carpet on many of its streets.
