J The custom of tattooing the body formerly existed in all parts of Poly nesia, but is now generally aban doned, except among tho ruder islanders. The process was substan tially as follows : The artist first drew the desired pattern upon the body of his subject; then taking a hne-. toothed comb, made of shell or bone, he dipped it into a liquid composed of tho pulverized coal of the candle nut and oil, and placing it on the spot caused it to puncture the skin by a blow with a mallet. Soon a bluish color appeared under the skin, which did not fade for many years. The first marks were made about the time, of puberty, but so painful, and even dangerous was the process that it wa3 not finished at once, but the pattern was elaborated year by year up to advanced age. The designs were mostly arrangements of curved lines, showing great artistic skill and ap nearimr to the eve likn a rlmnnrv nf line lace work. Often figures of men, uuua, uua, usiira or oiuur uujecis were pictured. The extent of the person covered by tattoo varied on different groups, but the thighs were invariably marked. High chiefs were exempt from the custom, as wero tho lowest class of freemen, slaves, and to a great extent women. Various theories have been proposed to account for the practice, but the only satisfactory one finds 1(3 ground in religion. The figures of living ob jects, so common are the totems of ho individual or tribe in which guardian spirits are believed to reside. The operator is always a priest, and the patient is tabu, "holy," during the process. Tho primitive idea seems to have been that by drawing the visible emblem of a deity upon the person his favor was thereby se cured. Later, this conception faded out, and the custom came to bo sim ply a modo of ornamentation or mark of social distinction. The chiefs wero not tattooed because themselves par taking of the divine nature, they did not require it, and the rest were ex empt because they did not deserve it. A poor old tattered, scarred, pun hobbled into an undertakers and lean ing its crutch against a coffin warmed its hands at the fire. "What do you want?" demanded the undertaker. "Sir," replied the poor pun humbly, "I have been dead and buried many a year, but have fallen into the hands of resurrectionists and here I am. I have heard that a new funny paper is to be started and called in to ask for some kind of hermetically scaled grave for my ashes. I have con cluded that 'cremation is my only hope." Cure For Piles. Piles are frequently preceded by a sense of u eight in the b.iei. loins and lower part of the abdomen, twusiiig the patient to suppose ho has some I'flpction of thekidncjs or neighhorim; organs. At limes, symptoms of indigestion arc present, flatulency, uneasiness of tlu stomach, clc. A moisture like perspir ation, producing a ery :isagreeab!e itching, after getting warm, is a com mon itteudant. Many persons especially parents object to quack uostrnm3 a3 likely to engender or encourage a love for stroug drink. They are right. Bet ter to die of disease than of drnnkeu ness. The use of Parker's Tonic does not involve this danger. It not only builds up thu system, curing all ail ments of the stomach, liver and kid neys, but it stimulates without in toxicating and absolutely cures the appetite for liquor.
