Trood by an Angry Bruto. An In.
trepid Beast In Battle.
Major Rogers had been out shoot
ing, and had discharged all his guns,
when an elephant made a charge at
him from the skirts of the jungle.
There was no help for it except to
run, and for 400 yards the Major kept
just ahead, feeling at every step as if
the trunk was trying to twist itself
about his loins. A turn around a tree
gave him a momentary advantage,
which he made the most of by spring
ing up into the branches ; he was as
nimble as a cat and as strong as a
lion. One foot higher and he would
have been out of tho elephant's
reach; but before he had time to
draw up his legs the elephant had got
him firmly clinched in the toils of his
proboscis! Still Kogers pulled against
him, thinking it better to have his
leg wrenched from the socket than to
fall back bodily into the animal's
power. The struggle, however, did
not last long, for, to the delight of the
pursued, the Wellington boot which
the former wore slipped off, released
the leg and saved the life of poor
Rogers. The dilemma, however, did
not end here, for the elephant finding
himself balked of his prey, after
destroying the boot, took up his
quarters beneath the branches and
kept his anticipated victim in the tree
for twenty-four hours, when the
country postman happened to pass by.
Rogers gave him notico of his posi
tion, and soon help came, and the
elephant was frightened away by
tom-toms and yelling. Had this oc
curred in a deserted part ofUie jungle
the officer would have been starved
to death in the tree.
There is a beautiful story of an old
elephant engaged in a battle on the
plains of India. He was standard
bearer, and 'carried on his huge back
the royal ensign, the rally point of the
Poona host. At the beginning of the
fight he lost his master. The "ma
hout," or driver, had just given him
the word to halt, when ho received a
fatal wound and fell to the ground,
Where he lay under a heap of slain.
The obedient elephant stood still
while the battle closed around him
and the standard he carried. lie
never stirred "a foot, refusing to ad
vance or retire, as the conflict became
hotter and fiercer, until the Mahrat
tas, seeing the standard still flying
steadily in its place, refused to be
lieve they were being beaten, and
rallied again and again around the
colors. And all tho whilew amid the
din of battle, the patient animal stood
straining its ears to catch the sound
of that voice it would never hear
again. At length the tide of conquest
left the field, deserted. The iMahrat
tas swept on in pursuit of the flying
foe, but the elephant, like a rock,
stood there -with the dead and dying
around, and the ensign waving in its
place. For thrco days and nights it
remained where its master had given
the command to" halt. No bribe or

The management of a Michigan
charity ball made the agreement that
the gentleman who sold tho most
tickets should have the honor of

The following took place during tho
Revolutionary war. Lord Percy's
regiment was about commencing to
fire at a target on Boston Common
one da', when an awkward looking
country boy that had outgrown his
jacket and trousers, came up.
"Now, my boys, for a trial of your
skill!" said Percy; " imagine tlie
mark lo be a Yankee and here is a
guinea for whosoever hits his head."
Jonathan' drew near the trial.
When the first soldier fired and
missed, nnd he slapped his hands on
his thigh and laughed immoderately.
When the second soldier fired and
missed, Jonathan threw his hat and
laughed again.
"Why do you laugh, fellow?"
asked Lord Percy, crossly.
"To think how sale the Yankees
are, if you must know," replied Jon
athan." "Whv, do you think you could do
better?"
"I don't know ; I could try."
"Give him a gun, soldier, and you
may return the fellow's laugh," said
Percy.
Jonathan took the gun, and looking
at every part of it carefullv, said:
"It won't burst, will it? Father's
gun don't shine like this, but I guess
it's rather a better gun."
"Why do you guess no?" asked
Bercy.
" 'Cause I know what that'll due,
and I doubt about this 'ere," replied
Jonathan. "But look o here! yon
call that 'ere mark a Yankee ; and I
won't fire at a Yankee !"
"Well, you may call it a British
regular, if you please," said Percy.
"Well, regular it is, then. Now for
freedom, as father says."
Jonathan raised his gun and fired.
"There, I guess that 'cro red coat
has got a holo in it !" cried he, turn
ing to the soldiers.
"Why don't you laugh at me now,
as that 'ere fellow said you might?"
"You awkward rascal, that was an
accident. Do you think you could
hit the mark again?" inquired Percy.
"I don't know, but I can try."
"Give him another gun, soldier;
and fake care the clown don't shoot
you. I should not fear to stand before
the mark myself."
"I guess you'd better try it."
"Why, do vou think you could hit
me?"
"I don't know, indeed ; butl could
try it."
"Fire away, then."
Sonathan then fired, and hit tho
mark.
"Ha! ha! ha! how father would
laugh to see me shooting at half gun
shot." "Why, you rascal, yon don't think
3'ou could hit the mark at twice tho
present distance?"
"I don't know. But I'm not afraid
to try."
"Give him another gun, soldiers,
and place the mark further off."
Jonathan tired again and hit as be
fote. "There! I guess that 'ere regular
is as dead as the pirate that father
says the judge hanged until he's

"There's a guinea," said Percy,
tossing tho coin to him.
