Tho secretary of the Lane county fair telegraphed to the secretary of the O. S. B. A., that the Lord was his shepherd, September 29th. The artesian well on TV. L. Ladd's East Portland farm is now 1,300 feet deep, at which depth the drill struck a stratum of volcanic rock that is hard to pierce. Tho race between Brown and Mc Cabe's "Whitehall boat and Denny Carran's Whitehall boat for S50 a side, comes off at eleven o'clock to morrow morning. A box of luscious strawberries pioked on John Matter's placo yester day morning, shows that Clatsop county stands second to none in qual ity of small fruits and length of dura tion of tho strawberry season. Scar let berries picked in October, and fully equal in size and flavor to those of June, come in well with grouse, grapes, watermelon and pumpkin pie. Through the death of her husband, Mrs. Carrie Pearson, aged 30, of Port land, had to seek county relief at the poor farm. Guslat Peterson, of the grand jury, spoke, among others, to P. J. O'Brien, aged 33, who, though he had never seen her, said he would marry her if she was willing. She consented, and they were married yesterday, meeting for the first lime at the altar, or words to that effect. Chas. Strauss, who was appointed from this state to the naval academy at Annapolis, and who was plucked in grammar in his preparatory examina tion, has a poor opinion of the Port laud high school, of which institu tion he is a graduate. Perhaps it's just as well for him that he didn't pass. The last young man sent to Annapolis, Fred Strang, was killed by rowdies, under the guise of "haz ing." llcsignation of Rev. J. J. Iloikka. Many of our Scandinavian citizens will learn with regret of the res ignation of Bev. J. J. Iloikka who has so ably and faith fully ministered to their spiritual wants. The reverend gentleman will preach for tho last timo in the upper Astoria church at ten o'clock next Sunday, the Gth inst, and in the Finnish church at three in tho after noon. Fulton was ablaze with light last evening, the occasion being the wedding re ception of G. C.Tullou and wife, nee Miss Maud E. lIobsOD. The marriage ceremony, which was comparatively private, was performed at 7:30 p. si., Rev. Mardou D. Wilson officiating, there being but fewpres ent besides the relatives and intimate friends of the couple. Tho bride was dressed in cream colored satin, trimmed in Duchess lace, with pearl ornaments; the bridesmaids were Miss May Hobson and Miss Lillian Cresbv: the groom was supported bv Dr. AVtlmr Fulton and Dr. E. A. Shaw. After the impressive words were pronounced that made the handsome young couple man and wife, they turned to receive tho cordial con gratulations of their friends, who filled the house from top to bottom. Sel dom has there been a heartier or more universal token of regard been elicited, or a more numerous array of wedding presents been displayed. Tho bride is au Astoria girl, born and bred, tho second daughter of Hon. John Hobson, collector of the port, and a universal favorite; tho groom is woll and favorably known as a lawyer of exceeding promise. From eight o'clock till nearly mid night tho invited guests thronged iu to proffer their best wishes and con gratulations, a sumptuous supper be ing served to all who wished to par take. Tho newly wedded pair leave for Portland this morning; on their return a new and handsomely fur nished house on Benton and Seventh streets awaits their occupancy. LU.MHEKING OX THE SOUND. A correspondent of the Chicago Lumbtrman writing from tho Pugefc sound lumbering district, says: Lumbermen in this district are now cutting close to the gronnd instead of climbing up from eight to twenty feet, and then chopping the tree down. In felling trees saws are also used. Another great improvement is the locomotive and steel rails, which is fast snperseling the skid road. A very uoticeablo improvement is also being made m the mills m the wav of live rollers and improved machinery. The former high standard of wages of from $30 to $123 has given way to $20 to $90. Hay can now lie got at $S a ton, and feed and other camp supplies at proportionate rates. With such reductions the loggers say they are able to make as much profit at $3 a thousand for logs as they did iu the height of good times when logs sold for $7.50. Much fault is found with mill" firms on account of tho scale given. I am informed that a firm is put ting logs afloat in Puget sound, near Olympia, over a five-milo stoam rail road, for $2.50 a thousand. There is no reason why loggiug cauuot be done as economically hero as in Mich igan. Mr.rriase Lircnse. The following marriage licenses were issued from tho county clerk's office during tho month of September: 3, Henry Wittl and Lillie A. Fox; 4, J. C. Bierson I. K Bergo; 4, G. O. Kornstad and L O. Bakke; 3, T. Seivertsou and Mary Anderson; 7, D. A. Bosc and Lizzie Dnell; 9, Karl Banta and Tnna Heggelund; 12, Jno. Forsmanu and Louisa Erickson; 12, A. L. Parker and Annie Nelson; 14, Jno. Wiik and M. Laiti; 26, O. H. Suo pauk and Lisa Pelto; 29? Elmer warnstan ana m. v. .aiiiior. New York hop dealers look for au advance in the price of Pacific coast hops shortly. For some timo prices have been at a standstill, owiug chief ly to the abundance aud cheapness of tho state crop. Becent advices from England show that the hop crop there has been almost a failure, aud tho result has been heavy orders for the Pacific coast article. The schconer Sea Foam upset at Westport, Cal. Wednesday afternoon and went on the rocks. The crew were rescued, with perhaps tho ex ception of one man. Loss, $10,009; insurance unkuown. In Salt Lake a soldier of the Sixth infantry, claiming to be Jame3 Har rington, attorney-at-law, has been bound over in $20,000 bond by the commissioner. He has been doing a wholesale business, writing to persons in Ireland that they had inherited fromSlOOOto S2000 in the wills of purported dead men. In their text remonstrants say: "Do not abaudon us, but save us from tho tyranny of our enemy the international association." The decision of tho postmaster gen eral, to discontinue tho Asiatic mails via Europe and the Suez canal, and to restore tho route via San Frau cisco using the four steamers of the Occidental and Oriental lino for tho purpose, gives rise to rumors that the Pacific Mail may withdraw its steam ers from the China trade. Bland, author of tho silver coinage bill, says: "I havo heard no changes of opinion in any members of tho last congress who were re-elected, and do not anticipate any affirmative action of the next congress upon the silver question. When Warner's bill is presented to the house I shall offer an amendment, providing that after silver has been deposited at market prices, and certificates issued, the government shall coin bullion into dollars of the present standard, to be used in redeeming certificates when presented. I do not believe any man could be elected to congress from any district in tho Mississippi valley who announced his determination to vote for the suspension of tho coinage of the silver collar." Immediately on being installed in his new position. Alibi Sahub Pasha or dered all the various department commanders to report tho strength of their respective commands and their present condition, and detailed sev eral officers to inspect various posts. Whence comes this epidemic of suicides and murders? Becent dis cussions havo named several causes. Hon. C. H. Beeve, of Indiana, charges it to infidel teachings hold ing that hopelessness of a future state cripples fortitude for bearing life's ills. Another declares suffering from the universal business depres sion the cause. A third writer -attributes it to increasing insanity, a physician thinks much of the ten dency is inherited, while temperance advocates lay the responsibility on strong drink. Free-thinkers have committed sui cide, but so have orthodox church men. Financial straits have beset many, but the wealthy have also taken their life. Insanity and dissipation have pre ceded suicides and family murders. One feature common to almost every such crime challenges atten tion. Well nigh every report of sui cide and family murder mentions the Eerpetrator as having "for some time een subject to melancholy." Whence comes this? All recognized medical authorities tell us that the fire which consumes tho brain is always kindled by derangements of digestion; that good digestion is impossible without pure blood, and pure blood is never known when the liver and kidneys are out of order. Under such circum stances, a preventive should be sought, and for this Warner's Safe Cure is sovereign a fact conceded by the best authorities in tho land, and it is especially commended by the celebrated Dr. Dio Lewis.
