E. Baldamus, lias specimens of tho nests and eggs of 2,000 species of birds, mostly European. It has been recently proven that earth worms are capable of regenerat ing tissue, large pieces cut from their bodies being replaced by new growths. The discovery was recently an nounced of a fossil air-breathing ani mal of an earlier age than any before known a scorpion from the upper Silurian deposits of Sweden. A cock roach's wing plating from a still more remote period the middle Silurian has since been found in France. Flying fish do not fly is the asser tion of Dr. K. Mobius, a German zool ogis. The muscles of their pectoral fins are too small to sustain the weight of the body in the air. The impulse to which they owe their long shooting passage through the air is delivered while they are still in the water, by the powerful masses of muscles on both sides of their body. A Quinine Substitute. The doun dake plant (Ccplmlina esculents, Sebum; lias been described to the Paris Academy of Sciences as an as tringent and febrifuge capable of re placing quinine, as well as a dyA yielding a beautiful j'ellow color. It grows in West Africa, and resembles the Morinda of the South Sea Islands quite closely in many respects. Its active principle is doundakine. A New Food. In the seed of the cotton-tree, of which several varieties are cultivated in Bolivia, a corres pondent of the French academy an nounces the discovery of the richest of all known grains in nilrogeneous substances. lie is convinced that tho flour of this seed is destined to be come an important article of food. A paste made from it may serve as a substitute for milk. Prompting Eye - Glasses. The "microphotoscope," devised by a schoolmaster of the Isle of Man, is a pair of spectacles in the rims of which are several micro-photographs, each provided with a little magnifying lens. The instrument is worn as an ordin ary pair of spectacles, and the wear er may at any time see tho pictures by slightly turning bis eyes. A public speaker may thus have in view pho tographs of his notes; a traveler, maps or tables of information ; a de tective, a list of criminals sought; and so on. Temperature Perception. A Ger man physiologist,Prof. Eulenberg, has found that different parts of the body are very unequally sensitive to differ ences of heat and cold, the sense of temperature being most acute in the forehead aud the back of the hands, and least active in the back and the upper part of the abdomen. At the former spots differences of about a third of a Fahrenheit degree were dis tinctly perceived, but at the other two points differences were only de tected when reaching nearly two de grees. Chemistry for the Kitchen. Mr. YV Mattien "Williams states that he is making experiments to learn the effi ciency of the diastase of malt, and also that of various acids, in convert ing vegetable tissue into dextrine and grape sugar. "When a process for ef fecting such conversion is made generally available our food sup plies will be greatly extended. Turnips and similar vegetables will become delicate diet for in valids; horse-beans will be better than beef; and delicate biscuits and fancy pastry, as well as ordinary bread, will be produced from saw duEt and wood-shavings plus a little leguminous flour. This may be done now. Chemists have long been able to transform old shirts and rags into sugar in their laboratories. It has yet to be done in the kitchen. Lacustrine Revelations. Since 1873 no less than 19,599 relics of the Proto-IIelvetians, as the prehistoric lake-dwellers of Central Europe have been named, have been dug from the beds of lakes Neuchatel and Bienne. Swiss museums have received 13,078 of these objects, while Dr. Goss, of Neuville, has nearly 6,000. Dr. Goss finds evidence that the progress of this vanished race was marked by three successive stages an age of stone, an age of bronze, and an age of iron. There may also have been an age of copper, preceding that of bronze. Remains of villages of the stone age are most abundant thir teen having been found in lake Bienne, with only two of the bronze age but those belonging to the era of metals are much more extensive. Besides the stone and metal imple ments, various wooden objects have been found, such as canoes, an ox jyoke, fragments of tables and benches toy ooats, nammers anu spaaes. jo complete dwelling has yet been found among the villages of the lakes, but charred planks and timbers remain to tell of the mysterious conflagration in which perished a remarkable and ancient civilization. Daubing the Flunkeys. The late John Heneage Jesse, the well-known author, had an aversion amounting to a positive 'phobia, for the British Jeames. He has been known to stand in St. James' street on a drawing-room day, at the edge of the curb, and with the end of his stick, which he dipped into the road puddle, daub the imaculate stocking of the passing flunkeys, who, as he well knew, dare not move from their stations, accompanying the act with much opprobrious language. Tho Alliterative Mania. The advantage supposed to inhere in an alliterative head-line or title page is not a device of the modern news editor. It seems to have been worked for all there was in it by the religious tract writers who flourished so plentifully in Cromwell's time. In 1626 some one published in Lon don a pamphlet with the rather start ling title: "A Most Delectable, Sweet, Perfumed Nosegay for God's Saints to Smell At." Later on an other peculiar man presented the reading world with "Snuffers for Divine Love," and "APair of Bellows to Blow Off the Dust Cast Upon John Fay." Cromwell's time, however, was most noted for queer title-pages. A work on charity, written then, was entitled, "Hooks and Eyes for Be lievers' Breeches." Another author, in his attempt to elevate poor, human nature, called his labor in that direc tion, "High-Heeled Shoes for Dwarfs in Holiness," and justthen "Crumbs of Comfort for tho Chickens of the Covenant," were thrown out to tempt the literary appetite. A Quaker, as serious as quaint, who was impris"- oned on one of the charges so easily through a hole in the wall of an East ern vessel, known among men by tho name of "Samuel Fish." About this time another book, with a queer and ludicrous title-page, appeared "The Spiritual Mustard Pot to Make the Soul Sneeze with Devotion." Others stood on "Salvation's Vantage Ground, or Leaping Stand for Hea venly Believers," and fired "A Shot at the Devil's Headquarters Through the Tube of the Cannon of the Coven ant," which was said in the preface to be a language so plain that the most "illiterate reprobate could not fail to understand." A "Reaping Hook, "Well Tempered for the Stub born Ears of the Coming Crop, or Biscuits Baked in the Oven of Char ity, Carefully Conserved for the Chickens of the Church, the Sparrows of the Spirit and the Sweet Swallows of Salvation," startles lovers of the curious to-day. But to cap the cli max of the odd title-page mania an ambitions author declares his book to be 5'Seven Sobs of a Sorrowful Soul of Sin ; or the Penitential Psalms of the Princely Prophet David, Whcre unto aro Annexed William Jluinnis' Handful of Honeysuckles and divers Godly and Pithy" Drt tics, now rowly nigrnentetl." It was an Arizona man. With steady hand he filled the can ; for, as was usual with him, he filled the chalice to the brim. Appalled, af frighted and dismayed to see the wholesale liquor raid, the gentlemen behind the bar, in trembling tones, exclaimed : "Look liyar! You are mistaken, pard, I'm thinking. That isn't cider that you're drinking!" The stranger's fare grew dark and sad, he locked as though ft had it bad. In tones of grieving, mild re buke, he said, with :i reproachful loek: "You're mighty jihl stranger. t!ood heavens! I wouldn't drink Mi.it much cider for Inly I'ollars.'
