Makers of educational works are occasionally reminded that ge ographical statements sometimes require change to conform to ex isting facts. Patagonia was lately wiped out, and in other parts of South America exist conditions at direct variance with the text books. An American merchant, Mr. Bowers, formerly of Boston, now residing in Buenos Ayres, recently got a contract to furnish the schools of tlie Argentine Re- puplic with text books. He or dered many thousands of the lat est issue of the most revised ge ography from the most enterpris ing publishers in New York. When the books came he looked them over and immediately shipped them all back. "Why? Because these modern geographies represented the Argentine Re public as it was fifty years ago; and the people would have been insulted had they seen what was said of them. In the first place, that country was called the "Ar gentine Confederation," and stands as such upon most of the modern maps. The geographer aid not know, probably, that a bloody war had been fought to determine that the Argentine Republic was not a confederation, but a nation with a big "N." It is like calling the United States "The Confeder ate States of America." Then again, Buenos Ayres was put down as a city of 75,000 inhabit ants, when it lias 400,000, and is as proud of its growth and great ness as Chicago. There was not the sign or mention of a railway, when the Argentine Republic has as good and extensive a railway svstem as Kansas or Minnesota. What a sermon there is in that brief cable dispatch of Tuesday, which tells the American public that according to "statistics just gathered," the population of Ire land is "under five millions!" This is not an official census, it is true, but it is the result of careful inquiry. The return is otherwise probable, for the census of 1S81 (four and a half years ago) gave but 5,174,8'5G, toward which fig ures the numbers of the Irish peo ple had been receding for nearly forty years. The census of 1SH showed a population of S,175,124 on the island, but each decennial census since then has brought a decrease, until in 1881 there was a loss of three millions out of the eight millions of IS 11. In point of numbers the country has been thrown back a hundred years, for the census of 1801 amounted to 5,395,155! There is no glory for Great Britain in that exhibit. The Oregon Short line is mak ing 40c per 100 rate on wheat from Oregon points to Omaha, which, remarks the Chicago Times is the same rate as that made by the Northern Pacific from the same points to Minneapolis and St. Paul. The distances through to Chicago are about the same by both routes, but the Northern Pa cific has advantages over the Ore gon Short Line. It has connec tions with lake navigation at Du luth and other points on Lake Su perior, and with the great flouring mills at Minneapolis. These points are reached over its own lines, while they are inaccessible to the Oregon Short Line. The haul from the Oregon wheat 'fields to Omaha is about 1,G00 miles. At 40c per 100, or 8 per ton, the Union Pacific gets about -c per ton per mile. The Canadian surgeon gener al's official report on Kiel's rebel lion declares that only one man could be found whose death was known to have been caused by the Gatling gun, of which so much was said at the time. It is admit ted, however, that "the moral ef fect of these guns was tremen dous" and that is better than kill ing people. The "Walla "Walla Journal says: "The rate of freight from "Walla Walla to Dulutk is 31 1-5 cents a bushel; inspection and elevator charges would add about 1- cents making, say, 33 cents costs. Taking this cost from the price to day in Duluth, our wheat should bring in this city 37 cents on board the cars. Fortunately, the San Francisco market is so much bet ter that the shipper to that point can pay the high freights of the O. R. & N. Co. and still give 404 cents a bushel for wheat here on board the cars." The law for strikers is perfectly simple, but seems to be greatly misunderstood. Any number of men have a perfect right, except under special agreements, to drop the work they are at and refuse to resume it. This is a "strike," and is entirely legal. But no body of strikers has any right to interfere with the employment of other men or women willing to work in the places they have vacated. Such attempts should be severely pun ished, as the only way to teach strikers the law. Ir the death rate of the United States is 18 in the 1,000 annually, as the census compiler of vital sta tistics estimates it to be, it is much less than the rate in every European country but three; and these three are Ireland, 1S.3; Sweden, 18.4; and Denmark, 19.3. In England the rate is 21.4-; in France, 21.2; Germany, 27.1; Spain and Italy, 29.7; Austria, 31.2. A Montana Indian began rais ing stock a few years ago, having at the start only two or three head. Lately he sold his herd for 622,000. He is probably of the opinion that raising cattle is more profitable than "raising hair;" and his white neighbors probably agree with him. At least they would rather let him raise their cattle than their scalps. Tuc S. F. Post has the best two line article on the Puritan's victory over the Genesta that has showed up yet. Our witty San Francisco contemporary says: "The defeat of the Genesta was evidently due to a sort of Puritan sail 'em witchcraft. At any rate, there is no doubt witchcraft beat." The Boston Post is anxious to know what the 10,000 or 25,000 mugwumps in Massachusetts will do in the pending campaign. Our impression is that they will sit on the fence and exchange bets on the respective lengths of the rival processions. Not all powers are so brutally frank, but Bismarck only voices the general sentiment when he in timates that territory occupied only by ignorant natives is ''unoc cupied territory" for all intents and purposes of maurauding Euro peans. The Earl of Carnarvon is un doubtedly right. England should develop the natural resources of Ireland or give the Irish a chance to do it themselves. NEW TO-DAY. Notice.
