"All things are big with jest," said Herbert, and a certain learned and noted preacher recently wrote an ex cellent article showing that the Bible, tho best of books, has a vein of humor running through parts of it. Jokes are as "old as the hills." They came into existence with man, and have kept pace with him, and in this age of rapid transit, travel around the world in less than eighty days, mak ing the hoary world laugh and grow fat. No matter that the jokes that come from all quarters of the globe, and seem so new and rich to us, are the same old jokes that the learned and serious ancients laughed over thousands of years ago. The man who is too serious to enjoy a good laugh over a good joke is too serious to live. There is something woefully deficient in the composition of such a one and he cannot be a pleasant com panion, hence must find life some thing of a burden. It is an almost incomprehensible fact that the men who have laughed longest and loud est over a witty story or a rich joke are men of the greatest learning and deepest thought, philosophers, sages, preachers, lawyers, editors, and all professional people. It is not possi ble for two well-read or well-educated men to be together an hour, no mat ter how important tho business that called tho meeting, without one or both relating a good joke or story, or an anecdote of some man great and famous in his day. There is no trait of character so strongly developed in human nature as curiosity, and it is curiosity that makes us listen so eagerly to everything that is told of both the dead and living ; their con versation, their disposition, character or appearance, and we eagerly accept it. Whether it be true or false, kind or unkind, is no affair of ours; it is "good to know," hence acceptable. Tho Doctor In Asia Minor. An old woman next came forward, and taking hold of the corner of my cloak she kissed it, and then kneeling before me began in a very wheedling manner to call my attention to her case. She went on to describe the most anomalous symptoms, affecting her eyes, ears, limbs and sometimes every part of her. On further in quiries she confessed to be quite well at that moment, but a year ago hav ing had these strange complaints, she dreaded tho same thing would invade her this year. I then promised to give her strong medicine, but ordered the crowd to stand at a short distance from us. A space is cleared, and all wait in silent admiration for my remedy. I slowly draw forth a bot tle of strong liquor of ammonia (or smelling salts) from my medicine chest, and holding it before my pa tient's eyes tell her to draw in a long breath, when I put it to her nose. I accordingly first hold her nostrils, then, having removed the stopper, I apply the mouth of the bottle to the nose, the fingers are removed, a long sniff is taken, followed by a sort of spasm, and she falls to the ground. A hum of horror runs through the crowd ; the patient after a short inter val rises, her eyes streaming with tears, and then broke from the crowd, "La ilaha ila 'llaha Mohammed ras ulu 'llaha." A Boston girl is going to marry Prof. Edmunds, one of the men who devised zone standard time. The marriage may be a happy one if some fiendish paragraphist doesn't rush in with the remark that the Professor is anxious to call her his zone.
