CZ1 lie gnUtj gtorim ASTOEIA. OEEGON: WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 23. 18S5 BE JUST. The Oregon Pacific Kailroad an nounce that they are ready to receive passengers and freight at Corral lis, Oregon, for San Francisco, to be carried by rail to Yaquina Bay, and thence by steamship to destination, thus avoiding the dangers and delays of the Columbia river bar. Chehalis Vidette, 18. It is with regret we note the apparent impossibility of some people to say a good word for one section without giving a thrust, however unjust, at another. As a resident of Oregon, as a citizen of this northwest coast we are glad to know that a line of steamers is running to Yaquina and would be pleased to know that it is per manent, for what helps one helps all, and whether it be Coos Bay, Yaquina, Portland, The Dalles, Astoria or anywhere else, no com munity in this state or "Washing ton can grow and prosper without helping all. But wouldn't it be just as easy, just as sensible and a good deal more neighborly for our Montesano friend to stick to the truth. He does well to notice and commend the Yaquina project, but why wind up with the im plied statement that "the dangers and delays of the Columbia river bar" made the new line a ne cessity? With the one exception of the detention of the Queen of the Pa cific, in September, 18S3, wo would ask the Ykletlc to name one instance where there was dan ger or even delay on the Colum bia river bar since 1S?9: this, though ocean steamers are daily coming and geing: just one in stance. A little reflection will doubtless convince our Chehalis friend that it is unmanly to prac tice such a contemptible course as the extract we quote evinces. The Astouiax talked up Chehalis county and Montesano long be fore the Yhlettc was thought of; it has always had a good word for that splendid section of our north west ceast: it rejoices in its pros perity and is pleased to see Mon tesano able to support such a good paper as the VidtUe. It knows that if Montesano and Chehalis county had five times their pres ent population Astoria would be the better for it and wo would all be so much ahead. So with Ya quina, or Tillamook, or Sand Isl and. But we fail to see the sense or utility of manifest falsehood in an effort to decry the Columbia river bar. The case of Brainerd, the scoundrel who escaped to Canada and was forcibly and illegally brought back by detectives, and who has escaped again and fled back to Canada, has served a val uable purpose in directing public attention to the ridiculously re stricted provisions of the extradi tion treaty. The administration at Washington should address it self at once to the task of procur ing a better arrangement. There is no probability that the Cana dians will object to any reasonable enlargement of the treaty's scope that our government may propose, for it is not to be suj)posed that any civilized state or community would care to become the refuge of embezzlers, swindlers and the land pirates of every grade, who now find security from just pun ishment by merely crossing the boundary line between the United States and Canada. A sensible Toronto journal says of the colony of American thieves now in the dominien: "These men are by no means desirable immigrants. If any complaints should arise at their presence here, they should come from Canadians, who have such society thrust upon them." It is high time to abandon the nice distinctions which have enabled some of the meanest and worst rascals alive to find cities of refuse by a trip of a hundred miles or so to the domininion line. Regarding the newly built Or egon City fish ladder, an inform- ant of the Welcome says: The whole ladder is 885 feet in length and consists of 41 steps. The first section is 3S5 feet long aud is an upward incline of steps cut in the bed. Then there is a level of 400 feet to break the force of the fall of the water. At the end of this there is another rise of steps 100 feet long which terminates at the top. The steps arc each one foot high and are twelve feet in length. Work was commenced August 23 and will be completed about the first of October. There are one hundred men engaged in the work. The principal difficulty of course lies with the rush of waters and the dams hold out for a short time only. In conjunction with tho steps there are also what are called locks, which break the force of the water in its descent and en ables the fish to rest. Butte Crrr is the largest town in Montana; it has a population of 14,000. The great industry is mining and ore reduction. There are some 3,000 men employed in and about the mills in various ways. The average shipments of silver are about 400,000 per month. The smelters produce about 7,000 tons of copper metal, which carries more or less silver. Coroner O'Donnell, of San Francisco, has commenced publi cation of a weekly paper called the Anti-Coolie Dynamiter. It will be conducted strictly in the interests of Coroner O'Donuell, as candi date for governor. Talking of high rents in Port land the Mercury says: "The la boring man who receives 2 per day wages should not be com pelled to pay over S per month rent." NEW TO-DAY. Notice of Application.
